It was already deep into the night. The sky was pitch black, and layers of darkness covered any light. A foreboding sense lingered in the air as the old and dilapidated school stood shrouded in a faint black fog.

Having been untouched for a long time, the iron gate was covered in rust, as red as blood. Wild grass growing around was gently trampled.

The surroundings seemed eerily quiet, terrifyingly silent, with only the sounds of their soft breathing remaining.

Although the fog was not thick, visibility was poor. The narrow corridor had no lights. Suddenly, a door was blown open by the wind.

“What should we do?! We shouldn’t have come here.”

“We can’t get out.”

A handsome young man spoke with a hint of tears in his voice, his face filled with panic. He struggled to hold back tears. He clung tightly to his boyfriend’s arm, trembling as he sobbed softly.

After being comforted by his boyfriend for a while, the young man managed to control his emotions and hurriedly looked towards his best friend. “Ning Ning, let’s wait a bit longer. We’ll definitely be able to get out.”

“Let’s take a break before running again. The school isn’t that big. There must be an exit somewhere.”

This place felt like a nightmare. They had only come here to seek a thrill, not expecting to encounter horrifying things: a headless woman, fingers twisting through window cracks, severed legs jumping on wooden boards, and layers upon layers of blood that were impossible to conceal mixed with the stench of decay, shattering their worldview.

If only they had known not to come to this death trap. They deeply regretted it. They were even uncertain whether they would see the sun tomorrow. They remembered exactly where the school entrance was, and the area wasn’t large, yet it felt like being trapped in a maze. No matter how far they ran, they always ended up back at the starting point.

Their phones had no signal, making it impossible to call for help. With the last ray of light extinguished, they faced even greater danger. Who knew what they would encounter next?

All their nerves were on edge, almost breaking down. In the silent atmosphere, fear and despair permeated, but no one dared to give up, only comforting themselves that they would soon find a way out.

Luo Ning was being pulled along, feeling dizzy and almost out of strength. He accepted the background of this world and was nearly paralyzed by fear. Previously, he had only experienced normal worlds, but this time was different. There were inexplicable supernatural elements here.

Luo Ning was terrified of those strange things, but there was no time to regret. The system had already placed him here, and this time his reward was rather disappointing, something like “Crying Like Pear Blossoms in the Rain.”

In this dangerous world, crying until he became blind wouldn’t help. Luo Ning thought helplessly.

Fortunately, he wasn’t alone. The handsome young man pulling him along was the protagonist, Bai Yue. The tall boy beside Bai Yue was naturally the other protagonist, Ji Xiu. Two others were running behind them, one chubby and the other with yellow hair. They had all come together as a group.

In An City years ago, a student suicide incident occurred at a high school. At first, this incident didn’t attract public attention. It was thought to be due to the pressure of high school studies, and the school suppressed the matter for the sake of its reputation. Everyone said that the boy had committed suicide.

However, strange things started happening after that. A girl jumped from the building at midnight, breaking her neck and spraying blood everywhere. In the second-floor restroom, several boys were found hanging in a bizarre manner.

One wave of incidents hadn’t settled before another arose. The school could no longer control the spread of this news. The events circulated online, and there were strong demands to find the killer.

However, surveillance footage showed that the dead students hadn’t been murdered but had left in strange ways themselves.

With no suspect found, the school was under a lot of pressure. They desperately tried to cover up the strange discovery, but after a certain dean and a teacher died one after another, the school finally admitted that something was amiss. Slowly, students began reporting seeing dark shadows at night, faucets spewing blood, and hair flowing from showerheads. Whether these were illusions or real encounters with something supernatural remained unclear.

Regardless of the truth, the school couldn’t continue to allow these incidents to happen again. For the sake of reputation and safety, or perhaps to suppress their own guilty conscience, a hefty sum was spent to construct a new campus within a short time.

No strange events took place in the new campus, while the old campus seemed to become a taboo topic. News online changed rapidly, and after half a year, no one mentioned it again.

Yet the abandoned old campus remained. One day, a cleaner wandered in. There were no injuries, but the person ended up going mad. Several students were found dead at the school entrance in gruesome ways, leading to a mysterious case. Examples of such incidents appeared, but with busy lives, people failed to notice.

This time, Luo Ning was called by the protagonist to seek a thrill in their mundane lives. They had all attended the old school. Why had they felt the need to come to such a strange place on a boring night?

And how could they find a loophole to break through the reinforced gates and locks? That was simply part of the world’s setting.

Luo Ning understood clearly and kept close to the protagonist. Unlike the two companions who should have died, the protagonist had a halo and would definitely survive to the end. This time, they could even escape.

Luo Ning needed to cling tightly to the protagonist’s leg. He glanced at the dense fog, which seemed to be concealing something—actually the so-called resentment—which had faded a little with the passage of time.

Guided by his memory, he kept running in the open space.

A wisp of black mist silently crept over, swirling around Luo Ning’s neck. A flash of crimson light flickered, and it coiled around Luo Ning’s neck. It was initially intended to materialize and tighten just enough to cut his throat, but for some reason, it hesitated and instead entangled itself around the hem of Luo Ning’s clothes.

Luo Ning didn’t notice this small change. His legs were moving rapidly, and cold sweat drenched his back. A sudden gust of wind made him shiver uncontrollably.

They were running so fast that they didn’t pay attention. The chubby man suddenly stumbled and fell to the ground. Something seemed to have pressed against his waist, and thinking it was a stone, he was about to toss it aside and continue running. But the moment he looked down, he let out a sudden scream.

The small thing was not a stone but a finger, with rotten flesh and worms crawling on it.

The chubby man felt nauseated and almost vomited. He hastily threw the bone away, but in an instant, it suddenly turned sharp and pointed, viciously stabbing into his heart. Blood splattered onto the ground, and the finger bone continued to dig into the fat man’s chest, seemingly grinding the flesh into mush.

The others didn’t have time to react. The first to step forward and yank the finger bone away was Ji Xiu. The tall man had a serious expression on his face. He crouched down to examine the chubby man, only to find that he was already dead.

The air seemed to freeze, and a terrifying silence fell over them, leaving their faces deathly pale.

They had all been naive stepping into the world, having hardly ever experienced the slightest hardship, let alone this extreme fear of walking on a tightrope between life and death. Who could withstand such heavy psychological pressure?

The yellow-haired man finally couldn’t take it anymore and cried out hoarsely, “I don’t want to stay here, I want to go back!”

“We’ve encountered a ghost! Why did we come to this ghostly place?”

“I don’t want to die here, I want to escape!”

He was losing his sanity, his pupils dilating, his mind blank, unable to accept what was happening before him. He ran forward frantically.

“I want to escape, I want to escape!”

Ji Xiu coldly grabbed him. “Are you out of your mind?”

“Acting alone is even more dangerous. The most important thing right now is to stick together!”

The yellow-haired man paused, and after regaining his wits, tears and snot streamed down his face. With a fierce look in his eyes, he turned around and kicked the chubby man’s lifeless body, venting his panic and anger.

“It’s all this bastard’s fault! Why did he have to suggest this adventure?”

“Good riddance. He should have died earlier.”

“He sought death on his own, so why drag me down with him?”

Ji Xiu impatiently stopped the yellow-haired man and shouted, “Enough! Hitting him won’t help. Yelling so loudly is just asking to expose yourself.”

“Instead of wasting energy on that, you should save your strength. We still don’t know how many dangers are lurking around. The priority is to find a way out.”

The yellow-haired man choked and trembled, gritting his teeth to restrain his sobs.

Luo Ning felt his mood grow heavier. He looked at the thick dark fog, desperately wanting to escape. This space felt like it was sealed off. He couldn’t contact the system.

What terrified him the most was that, according to the information, the mission target in this world was still within this teaching building—a vengeful ghost.

This mission likely surpassed several difficulty levels. If Luo Ning wanted to complete this mission, he had to approach the target, but he simply couldn’t stay in this eerie school where ghosts occasionally appeared.

Staying alone meant he might not even see the target before he died. Caught between the mission and safety, the balance in Luo Ning’s heart quickly tipped. He decided it was best to escape first and talk about the mission later.

Time ticked by slowly as they waited, draining their energy. Just when they felt they might cough up blood, the thick fog finally dispersed, and moonlight streamed in. Although the light was weak, it was a big surprise for them.

They all widened their eyes. After the initial shock, joy overwhelmed them. After a distortion of space, they suddenly found themselves back at the place where they had started. The tall teaching building behind them, shrouded in darkness, seemed distant now.

The fallen chubby man was carried away by Ji Xiu.

The yellow-haired man glanced back and cowardly said, “Let’s go.”

Without hesitation, they fled far from the darkness behind them. After a long time, they finally saw the first light of dawn breaking on the horizon, realizing they were safe.

Ignoring their image, they sat wearily on the ground, looking haggard and disheveled. Their expressions were both of lingering fear and the joy after surviving. But when thoughts turned to their dead companion, their smiles froze.

After resting enough, they remembered the chubby man and took him to the hospital before calling the police.

The chubby man wasn’t killed by them. During the police statement, this strange event was hard to explain. They only said that while exploring XX school, they didn’t know how their companion got killed.

There were already ongoing unresolved cases at the school, and since it was the chubby man who had actively invited them, and with no relevant evidence after examining his wounds, plus the other people also missing from the school, the police didn’t dare to investigate recklessly. The situation was at a standstill, so they couldn’t help but contact special departments above to assist with the case again.
