Luo Ning hesitated for a moment but eventually placed his hand on Gu Hanchen’s leg and asked softly, “Brother Gu, can I give you a massage? It might help you feel more comfortable.”

Sitting in a wheelchair for long periods without exercise often leads to poor blood circulation and muscle atrophy.

Gu Hanchen’s body stiffened. His legs were so ugly. What if Luo Ning got scared? Just the thought of his biggest flaw being exposed in front of Luo Ning made him want to retreat.

Luo Ning grasped his hand and reassured him, “Brother Gu, don’t be afraid. I just feel sorry for you and want you to relax.”

“You’ve always been so good to me. Can you try relying on me too?”

Luo Ning looked at Gu Hanchen earnestly and pleaded, “Don’t you like holding me to sleep? If you let me help, I’ll let you hug me again tonight.”

Under the attack of those big watery eyes, Gu Hanchen lowered his head in a sorry state. A thin layer of sweat formed in his palms as he nodded.

Suddenly, Luo Ning had a thought: Gu Hanchen was like a fish on the chopping board, just waiting to be slaughtered and for him to sharpen his knife.

Once he rolled up Gu Hanchen’s pants leg, Luo Ning’s expression was calm. He casually placed his hand on Gu Hanchen’s leg and started to massage it with just the right amount of pressure.

He felt a pang of sadness in his heart. The legs before him didn’t at all resemble those of an adult man. Although they were long, they looked like dry tree branches and were somewhat oddly shaped.

Gu Hanchen wanted to hide those legs under the fabric. He didn’t want to face them.

After enduring this for so long, he had to take care of himself, and the pain would flare up from time to time. Just thinking about how pitiful and helpless he must have been twisted Luo Ning’s heart. He massaged for a long time, not minding the fatigue. He just wanted Gu Hanchen to feel better.

When the pants were lifted, Gu Hanchen held his breath, watching Luo Ning’s reaction. When he noticed there was no surprise or disgust in Luo Ning’s eyes, it seemed like he regained his senses. Luo Ning’s delicate fingers pressed rhythmically. gently and patiently massaging his ugly legs. Rather than showing disgust to his body, the person before him treated him with care.

Gu Hanchen’s tense back finally relaxed, and the previously concealed wounds began to feel alive again. He leaned down slightly and buried his face in the crook of Luo Ning’s neck, breathing him in deeply.

Luo Ning felt like a big cat was resting on him. He allowed Gu Hanchen to come closer, finding the big cat somewhat cute.

“Brother Gu, how about we find a time to see a doctor?”

“Even though your current condition doesn’t affect your life, I just don’t want you to continue suffering. If you’re in pain, it makes me unhappy too.”

“What do you think about giving it a try? If it can be healed, that would be a pleasant surprise, and if not, there’s no need to be disappointed. If you don’t want to, then that’s also alright. Our life now is quite fulfilling.”

Luo Ning hoped Gu Hanchen would seek treatment because he believed that even a small chance shouldn’t be missed. He could see that Gu Hanchen was unhappy with his physical condition and wished to stand up again.

After a long while, a low, hoarse voice replied, “Okay.”

In the past, Gu Hanchen didn’t care about his body. He had even thought about leaving this world that held only malice for him after getting revenge.

But things were different now. He had someone he wanted to protect, and he needed to take care of his body to cherish that person deeply.

Luo Ning was overjoyed, a bright smile spreading across his face. He hadn’t expected Gu Hanchen to agree so easily. What did this mean?

It meant that Gu Hanchen was beginning to care about himself and was finding the motivation to live.

Every time he recalled Gu Hanchen’s ending in the original timeline, he felt uneasy. Now finally, they were starting to deviate from the original path.

Luo Ning suddenly remembered Gu Hanchen’s rotten father and stepmother. After leaving the game, he had been focused on Gu Hanchen and hadn’t thought about their current situation.

He asked the system and learned that both of them had already gone to prison. Luo Ning clapped in delight. His Brother Gu was impressive, swift, and decisive. Without those scumbags to interfere, and with Gu Hanchen agreeing to treatment, things would only get better.

…

Now that a decision had been made, Luo Ning wanted to take Gu Hanchen to the hospital. However, this was the most bustling city, home to one of the top hospitals in the country. Appointments were already booked up to hundreds of numbers, leaving no openings for him to book the nearest available appointment.

But after Gu Hanchen made a phone call, they went directly to a well-known private hospital. The examination was performed by one of the best doctors, someone who had received awards for exceptional skills. The hospital also had top-notch equipment. After conducting tests and X-rays on Gu Hanchen’s legs, they quickly received the results.

Although Gu Hanchen’s leg muscles had atrophied and the leg bones were deformed, there was a possibility of recovery through newly discovered cell therapy. Even if he couldn’t fully regain his previous condition, he would still be able to walk and manage basic activities without issues.

A weight lifted from Luo Ning’s heart. The situation was better than he had imagined. However, the treatment process would be very difficult, and Gu Hanchen would have to endure some pain. While he hoped for Gu Hanchen’s recovery, he was also worried about the suffering he might face.

Compared to Luo Ning’s worry, Gu Hanchen quickly agreed to schedule the surgery. He felt that he must seize even the slightest chance. Otherwise, as a disabled person, he didn’t have the right to keep Luo Ning by his side for a lifetime.

After reaching an agreement, the hospital began preparations. The rare cells were not yet available, so they needed to develop some backup plans to enhance the chances of a successful surgery.

Gu Hanchen had created a drug that saved cancer patients. Just three months after launch, the cancer cells of over a thousand patients had been controlled. Because of this, the surgeon viewed Gu Hanchen with special regard. He would not let such a genius be trapped by illness forever.

Luo Ning was worried that Gu Hanchen’s body might not withstand the intensity of the surgery, so he prepared healthy meals every day to help strengthen Gu Hanchen’s body.

Gu Hanchen obediently ate whatever Luo Ning made, and some color finally returned to his face.

He no longer had nightmares at night. He could hold Luo Ning’s soft body, feeling the warmth seep into his bones. Luo Ning cared for him in every way. When his legs hurt, Luo Ning was there to comfort him. Gu Hanchen was quite happy recently.

For the first time in over twenty years, he felt so joyful. As his mood lightened, it brought positive effects to his physical condition.

The flowers by the window blossomed brilliantly, and the once cold room became warm and inviting. Fragrance wafted through the air, and the previously cold environment was adorned with new decorations: sky-blue curtains, beige tatami mats, cushions to relieve stiff necks, and green potted plants—these small things added a different feeling to the home.

Gu Hanchen could clearly feel these small changes, which mirrored Luo Ning’s warm and vibrant personality.

Luo Ning emerged from the game with an unclear identity and background, and his actions were restricted. He wondered how Gu Hanchen had managed it.

A few days later, Luo Ning received his own ID card, no longer being an unregistered person. He could go shopping without worries.

But he was anxious about the upcoming surgery. He suspected that Gu Hanchen might be nervous as well, though he masked it with a calm facade.

Luo Ning made an effort to soothe Gu Hanchen frequently, being attentive not just to his health and the food he ate but also to his mental state. Whenever he had free time, he stayed with Gu Hanchen, reading, watching TV, or taking walks together.

Breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the beautiful scenery outside always helped relieve some stress. Their residential area was medium-sized with an emphasis on greenery. There was a small park nearby, adorned with flowers and plants in an elegant way. Many people could be seen walking and enjoying the outdoors.

They strolled along the path for a while, and Luo Ning spotted a small stall selling hand-painted ceramic dolls. These handicrafts were fun and could serve as decor at home. His interest piqued, and he pushed Gu Hanchen over to take a look.

They picked out the prettiest one: two adorable large cats snuggling together. Luo Ning thought that when Gu Hanchen leaned close to him, he looked like a big cat.

Especially with the big ceramic cat tilting its head slightly and giving a cold indifferent glance, Luo Ning instantly thought of Gu Hanchen.

He pulled up a small stool to sit beside Gu Hanchen and taught him how to paint. Gu Hanchen was careful and serious in his movements. He painted the small cat, which was affectionately cuddling with the big cat, with its eyes curving sweetly, reminding him of Luo Ning’s sweet smile.

They both had steady hands and painted the cats beautifully. Their creations rival even the shop’s displayed items, attracting envious glances from onlookers.

These small things gained new meaning once created together with Luo Ning. Gu Hanchen said, “Let’s take this back with us.”

Luo Ning smiled and went to find the owner, taking a bag to carefully pack the pair of cats.

Two weeks later, the surgery was set to begin. Gu Hanchen seemed unconcerned, but Luo Ning was so anxious. That night, he held Gu Hanchen’s hand and said, “Brother Gu, you don’t have to be afraid. The surgery will be quick.”

“The hospital is fully prepared. This time, it’ll definitely go smoothly.”

Luo Ning thought about how Gu Hanchen was finally filled with hope. The doctor had said the slim chances were quite slim. He was afraid that things might not go so well and that Gu Hanchen would be heartbroken.

The uncertainty gnawed at him so that he couldn’t sleep, let alone Gu Hanchen.

Luo Ning carefully offered comfort. Gu Hanchen chuckled, wrapping his arms around him and patting his back. He said, “Be good, go to sleep.”

Luo Ning nestled into Gu Hanchen’s embrace, trying to think positively. The surgery was bound to succeed, especially with the doctor’s capabilities. After letting a mix of thoughts swirl in his mind, he finally closed his eyes.

The next day, when the surgery room door closed, it remained shut for several hours.

Luo Ning sat anxiously in a chair outside, glancing at the door occasionally. He had no idea what was happening inside and could only count the passing time.

The hours felt long, as if they were being stretched endlessly. Luo Ning’s heart rose. If all went well, why would it take so much time?

He walked in circles restlessly, lacking the appetite to eat. Suddenly, he heard some movement. Luo Ning felt a wave of relief wash over him as he hurriedly walked over.

Fortunately, the doctor brought good news. The surgery was successful, but Gu Hanchen would need to stay for observation.
