- Chapter 126 - You Have to Spend Money to Keep Your Wife Happy
In the one-bedroom apartment, Luo Ning slept alongside Gu Hanchen. Having stayed in the game for too long, he found it hard to adapt to reality. Being close to Gu Hanchen made him feel safe.
His small face was buried in the blankets, his round and bright eyes blinking, lashes fluttering gently. He stared closely at Gu Hanchen and reached out his fingers to trace Gu Hanchen’s brows and eyes.
Gu Hanchen had a good foundation. Even though his face showed signs of poor health, the sharp and handsome features were still obvious. However, his overly intense gaze made it intimidating to approach him.
A tingling sensation came over him. Gu Hanchen pinched Luo Ning’s hand, then covered his eyes and said in a low voice, “Baby, go to sleep.”
Luo Ning smiled shyly. In the game, Gu Hanchen used to coax him to sleep by turning off the TV, and one day he just started calling him baby. Luo Ning quite liked it.
He even got used to acting spoiled, but hearing Gu Hanchen murmur it in person now made him blush uncontrollably.
Rubbing against the soft blanket, the tip of his ears turned slightly red. He closed his eyes and moved closer to Gu Hanchen.
Feeling Gu Hanchen’s cold legs, Luo Ning placed his warm little feet over Gu Hanchen’s, trying to transfer some warmth.
His tiny, soft, warm feet sent a slight tremor through Gu Hanchen’s body. He had never been this close to anyone before, but feeling Luo Ning’s warmth was an experience he found so irresistible.
A desire arose within Gu Hanchen. The hard edges of his heart began to crumble. He now just wanted to fully integrate this person into him.
Luo Ning began to doze off, his small face nestled in the blankets, his soft hair spread across the pillow. His quiet, gentle breathing sounded in Gu Hanchen’s ears. He slowly adjusted his position, pulling Luo Ning into his arms, burying his nose in the crook of Luo Ning’s neck, and inhaling a faint scent.
Gu Hanchen took a deep breath, his breath entwining with Luo Ning’s. The darkness in his eyes flickered with stubbornness and desire. His arms tightened around Luo Ning, battling the impulse to hold him too fiercely. As if guarding a treasure, his eyes never left Luo Ning’s face, afraid that a moment’s distraction would make him vanish.
Luo Ning had taken the initiative to appear before him, so he was now and forever his. Gu Hanchen would never allow himself to lose him.
Luo Ning slept soundly until he woke up on his own. Rubbing his eyes, he walked out to find Gu Hanchen making sandwiches.
Gu Hanchen was dressed in a white shirt. His tall, thin body exuded a melancholy aura. Luo Ning felt a pang of sympathy. His Brother Gu was so pitiful. He was determined to find a way to nurture Brother Gu back to health and make him plump and healthy.
Gu Hanchen’s expression softened. “We don’t have any milk for now. Just make do with this for breakfast. I’ll have some delivered from the supermarket later.”
Luo Ning waved his hand to stop him. “It’s fine, we can just go out and buy some later.”
“I also wanted to borrow some money from you to buy some clothes.”
Luo Ning had been cooped up in the game for too long. He just wanted to rush out and look around. Plus, Gu Hanchen had always lived in a dark room, sullenly locked within his own world. That wasn’t good for his health. Luo Ning wanted to take the opportunity to bring Gu Hanchen outside for a walk.
Gu Hanchen’s brow furrowed slightly. He didn’t voice his true feelings. Deep down, he was uneasy. Maybe once they went out, Luo Ning would realize just how dull he was and might even leave him.
In truth, he preferred to keep Luo Ning hidden away, securely enveloped in his arms, never allowing him to go outside. That way, it would just be the two of them. Only he could see and touch Luo Ning.
Some dark emotions stirred in Gu Hanchen’s heart, but when he caught sight of Luo Ning’s cheerful smile, he didn’t want to stop him anymore. He was trapped in a dark and boring room, but he had no right to lock Luo Ning away with him.
Luo Ning dressed himself up neatly, putting on all of Gu Hanchen’s clothes. He wasn’t sure what places were nearby, so he asked Gu Hanchen about them all.
Pushing the wheelchair, Luo Ning curiously looked around. High-rise buildings, bright and bustling. Actually, the scenes didn’t seem particularly beautiful, but having been locked away for so long, everything felt novel to Luo Ning. The sky was blue, the flowers smelled fragrant, and everything was alive.
Gu Hanchen pointed at a nearby dessert shop. “They have ice cream inside. Do you want some?”
Luo Ning nodded like a chick pecking at rice. He ordered two ice creams, took a bite of his, and held one out to Gu Hanchen.
Gu Hanchen tasted the strange flavor. It was icy cold but very sweet. Although he didn’t particularly like sweet things, he finished it all this time.
Their first stop was a nearby shopping mall where Luo Ning bought pajamas, an outer coat, and shoes. With his great figure, he looked good in anything. His exquisite looks and outstanding temperament made him seem like a shining being, effortlessly attracting attention.
But just buying for himself wasn’t enough. Luo Ning noticed there weren’t many clothes in Gu Hanchen’s closet, so he picked out two pieces for him as well.
Gu Hanchen followed behind, blocking the curious gazes directed at Luo Ning. He didn’t mind the stares, but everyone was looking at Luo Ning, which made him slightly irritated. Fortunately, Luo Ning only had eyes for him, making his mood lift a little.
Two pretty young girls from the store next door approached, staring at Luo Ning before shyly saying, “Little brother, we’re running a promotion for our brand. Can we add you on WeChat? You can get free gifts!”
Gu Hanchen could see what this was. It was a pickup attempt. His expression turned cold. Just as he was about to speak, Luo Ning politely responded, “I’m sorry, but that probably won’t work.”
The two girls couldn’t hide their disappointment. They loved handsome guys like him and especially wanted his contact information. One of them bit her lip, unwilling to give up, and tried to say something again but met Gu Hanchen’s gaze.
His expression was cold and indifferent, and the aura exuded from him kept people at a distance. He seemed impatient with their presence.
The two girls stepped back and fell into an awkward silence, embarrassed to continue.
Although he was a handsome and cold guy, he came off as unfriendly. The girls felt a bit regretful as they stole one last glance at Luo Ning’s face.
Luo Ning patted Gu Hanchen’s shoulder, signaling him to relax and not to keep his defenses up.
Then remembering Gu Hanchen’s thin body, he headed to a supermarket downstairs to buy vegetables, fruits, and a bouquet of fresh flowers to brighten up the house.
Passing a hair salon, Luo Ning casually pushed Gu Hanchen inside and had Tony give him a nice haircut. Gu Hanchen also found his unkempt appearance unpleasant and asked Tony for a shorter style.
As his features became fully revealed with the trim—his deep contours, sharp eyebrows, and lightly colored lips—he appeared nearly perfect aside from looking a bit pale.
Tony was surprised by the man’s transformation after the haircut. He nodded in satisfaction and became even more confident in his skills.
Luo Ning’s eyes lit up slightly as he praised, “Brother Gu, you look so handsome!”
Gu Hanchen’s tense back relaxed, and for the first time a genuine smile appeared on his face. He had feared that cutting his hair might make him look worse. Although he still didn’t look great, it was definitely an improvement.
The two strolled home. In the elevator of the apartment, Luo Ning didn’t feel tired at all pushing the wheelchair, but Gu Hanchen glanced at his own legs with some disappointment. If he could walk normally, Luo Ning wouldn’t have to take care of him so much.
Watching Luo Ning bustle around in the apartment, Gu Hanchen, with his limited mobility, tried to help with what he could.
Luo Ning put the groceries in the fridge. It was just around lunchtime, so he started boiling ribs while preparing a fish in a smaller pot. The empty fridge with only a few eggs and some bread revealed how unhealthy Gu Hanchen’s diet had been. He was just eating whatever he could find.
Luo Ning tried his best to cook delicious and nutritionally balanced meals, with both meat and vegetables. The previously quiet kitchen was soon filled with a warm and comforting atmosphere.
As the aroma wafted towards him, Gu Hanchen’s eyes softened, warmth filling his heart. He loved this change.
Luo Ning brought the dishes to the table, placing the warm soup in front of Gu Hanchen. “How is it, Brother Gu?”
Gu Hanchen had only seen Luo Ning cook in the game. Back then, he watched the little figure cook soup and vegetables and thought he was just playing around, and his serious expression was quite cute. Now, tasting the delicious soup, he was a bit surprised. “It’s really good.”
Luo Ning removed the fish bones and served him a piece of tender meat. “Then I’ll cook for you every day.”
Gu Hanchen laughed, his eyes curling into a smile. This time, it was a truly relaxed smile.
The more time he spent with Luo Ning, the more he found him adorable.
Gu Hanchen wasn’t so fragile, but he liked being cared for so wholly and with such devotion by Luo Ning. For moments like this, he was willing to give everything he had.
Luo Ning avoided mentioning Gu Hanchen’s legs, fearing he might touch a sore spot. He acted as if he didn’t know anything.
However, one evening after taking a shower, he heard muffled groans coming from the bathroom.
Gu Hanchen struggled with his bathing due to his mobility issues. He had to move slowly and get dressed laboriously. Every simple action required great effort, and it was normal for him to bump and scrape himself.
Luo Ning understood Gu Hanchen’s pride, so while he cared about him, he didn’t view Gu Hanchen as a weak person. Pity would only embarrass him. If Gu Hanchen could manage on his own, Luo Ning wouldn’t overstep.
Hearing the noises made him worried. He was afraid Gu Hanchen might fall. Unable to hold back, he asked, “Brother Gu, do you need any help?”
Gu Hanchen was buttoning his shirt, a faint sheen of sweat on his forehead. He replied nonchalantly, “I’m fine, really.”
As he dried his wet hair, Gu Hanchen stared intently at his useless legs, which looked ugly and out of place, feeling like they didn’t belong to his body at all.
Even standing temporarily was impossible for him. Instead of taking care of Luo Ning, he felt like a burden. A wave of resentment and despair flashed in Gu Hanchen’s deep, gloomy eyes.
He closed his eyes slightly, tucked away his legs, and tried to calm his emotions before slowly exiting the bathroom. He faced Luo Ning with a gentle demeanor. Luo Ning quickly grabbed a hairdryer and helped him dry his hair, not wanting him to catch a cold.
The bed was nearby, and Gu Hanchen tensed his arms as he propped himself up, his head lowered. His emotions were sensitive at this moment, unable to hide the abnormality of his legs. His lips were tightly drawn.
Luo Ning steadied him, helping Gu Hanchen relax a bit.
