Two similar flowers sat on the balcony, their leaves gently swaying in the morning light.

Gu Hanchen felt a rare sense of peace and tranquility. His legs still hurt, but he finally had a good night’s sleep, no longer struggling in nightmares as he had before.

After finishing work, opening the game became a habit.

The maid entered the room under the guise of delivering food, glancing around. Her eyes lingered at Gu Hanchen’s legs with hidden disdain. She coldly placed the bowl down before heading to Lin Shuangshuang’s room.

“Madam, the eldest young master is the same as usual, nothing seems wrong. Recently, he appears to be learning about growing flowers.”

Lin Shuangshuang fiddled with her nails and glanced sideways. “How could he possibly start growing flowers out of nowhere?”

The maid shook her head. “Maybe he’s just bored. He doesn’t have as much to manage as the second young master who manages a big company every day.”

Lin Shuangshuang chuckled. Her son couldn’t be compared with the useless Gu Hanchen. She understood this stepson well. He was a tough nut to crack and wouldn’t easily concede. She maintained her last bit of vigilance, occasionally observing what he was doing.

She felt a hint of suspicion. How could Gu Hanchen possibly find the leisure to grow flowers? It was laughable. Had he finally stepped out of his shadows? That could be troublesome. She wished for Gu Hanchen to remain in pain forever. However, if he was useless, she didn’t need to worry anymore.

Just wait a little longer. Gu Hanchen was still too much of an eyesore. This family couldn’t accommodate someone useless. Lin Shuangshuang recalled what her husband had said recently and almost laughed aloud. Before she kicked Gu Hanchen out, she intended to use him as a stepping stone for her son!

…

There was still no response from the system today.

After a heavy rain, the soil was damp. Luo Ning waited for it to dry a bit. Panting, he dug into the soil. Now, besides watching TV and reading books, he had lots of free time. Seeing the vast stretch of barren land outside, he decided to try growing some vegetables out of boredom.

The naturally grown vines had no flavor and tasted bland, but he remembered that the food Gu Hanchen bought for him was sweet. What would it be like if he grew his own fruits and vegetables from seeds?

Gu Hanchen had bought him farming tools and seeds, so Luo Ning eagerly set to work.

The seeds included potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. He decided to try them all.

There were lizards scurrying around the land, but Luo Ning noticed they didn’t seem to ruin the vines, so growing vegetables should be fine.

He dug rows of small holes beside the vines, dropped in the seeds, covered them with soil, and watered each row.

He waited casually, not expecting that the next day, he would see little sprouts bursting from the soil. One cabbage had grown as big as a fist, and green tomatoes hung beneath the leaves.

Luo Ning rubbed his eyes in shock, thinking he must be seeing things. How could they have grown so quickly? It was only one night!

Indeed, the game world shouldn’t be judged by normal standards.

He hurried over and found that the lettuce on the outer edge was vibrant and tender. He broke off a piece to taste. It was crisp, refreshing, and sweet—far better than the vines. Luo Ning licked his lips, even more eager for the tomatoes.

His eyes curved into crescent moons as he happily told Gu Hanchen that they would be able to eat fresh vegetables tonight. Then he thought for a moment and lamented, “If only I could send you some.”

Gu Hanchen was curious about what the vegetables that the little figure had worked so hard to grow would taste like.

However, the joy of the harvest was too short-lived. Luo Ning happily ate boiled ham and cabbage soup that day and woke up a bit earlier the next morning, eager to see if the tomatoes were ripe and if the potatoes had grown.

But when he ran outside, Luo Ning barely recognized his little vegetable garden. How could it have changed so much? Yesterday it was neat and pretty, but today it was a complete mess, with roots and stems flung everywhere.

The soil had been uprooted in spots and quickly crawled off in another direction.

Luo Ning was about to cry. His sore back had worked hard to nurture this garden, and now it was ruined. The cabbages, lettuce, and cucumbers were completely stripped, their stalks vanished without a trace, and tomato juice was splattered everywhere. He even grabbed a potato vine—great, it was the last remaining plant.

Those bastard monsters! He thought they wouldn’t come to destroy the garden, but they had eaten everything clean.

So infuriating! Luo Ning picked up his mallet and charged at the lizards.

The lizards scurried away. They usually ate underground minerals, but after smelling the delightful fragrance, they couldn’t resist nibbling them all up, even savoring the taste. They had never tasted anything so delicious before.

Luo Ning ran very fast, swinging his mallet with all his force, chasing those lizards. He was determined to deal with all of them.

But after a few hits, the lizards skillfully burrowed underground, hiding in the soil and not coming out. Luo Ning’s inability to hit them only fueled his anger.

When Gu Hanchen opened the game, he saw Luo Ning running with his tiny legs, his little face flushed, his hair damp, his forehead glistening with sweat, and his eyes filled with anger and frustration.

Then perhaps he got tired from running, as he plopped down on the ground, pouting in grievance.

Gu Hanchen asked with a smile, “Who upset you?”

Panting, Luo Ning pointed towards the garden, raising his voice, “Look, that group of monsters has eaten everything!”

“They ate and ran faster than anyone!”

He barely had the chance to taste the vegetables himself and ended up giving those annoying monsters a feast.

Gu Hanchen frowned. He understood how much effort it took for the little one to grow those vegetables. Those monsters were a real annoyance. Seeing the little one’s cheeks puffed up in anger, clearly not in the mood to speak, Gu Hanchen searched his shopping cart for items. One was a protective fence to keep out intruders. He pointed to the location of the vegetable garden, and a fence enveloped it.

The other was a little cannonball that had moderate power and could be launched up to fifty meters.

Gu Hanchen coaxed, “Alright, no need to be mad. Use this to blow them out and get your revenge.”

Luo Ning got up, gripping the eggplant-shaped explosive. He seemed to be revitalized. He threw the bomb hard. With the shield protecting him, he was safe. It followed a smooth parabolic arc before landing in the soil and exploding with a bang. Clods of dirt were scattered everywhere, and amidst the smoke rose several small pits.

The frightened lizards indeed darted out, dark and running in all directions.

Luo Ning lifted his mallet and charged in, happily giving the lizards a good beating. Although he wasn’t very strong, he needed to let out all his pent-up frustration.

After his arms grew sore, Luo Ning finally stopped, feeling much more relaxed.

He returned home and found ice cream and small cakes waiting for him. Luo Ning enjoyed a comfortable rest. Here, he didn’t have to worry about gaining weight. He could eat snacks and desserts freely.

Luo Ning said softly, “Brother Gu, you’re so thoughtful.”

“Here’s a little heart for you. Muah!”

He mumbled, his voice soft and sweet, unconsciously carrying a hint of coquetry.

To Gu Hanchen’s ears, it sounded extremely good like a gentle breeze. A smile appeared on his lips. How was he so well-behaved? Was his little mouth coated with honey?

However, the pleasant mood didn’t last long. There was a knock at the door. Gu Hanchen quickly concealed his expression and slowly rolled his wheelchair to open the door. He found his father standing there, who had just come back from work.

The middle-aged man, dressed in a well-tailored suit, appeared well-maintained and imposing with his good-looking features.

His face was cold as he looked at Gu Hanchen with dissatisfaction.

Glancing at the dimly lit room, Gu Hanchen’s father frowned even harder. He didn’t even want to step inside. This son of his irked him to no end.

He used to feel that this son had ruined their happy family, that he was superfluous. Coupled with this son’s cold and aloof personality, always distant and prickly and showing no admiration or respect, he disliked him even more. He ignored him as if he were a stranger. Now that this son had a crippled leg, he looked even more disgraceful, only bringing him shame.

If there weren’t a matter to discuss, he wouldn’t bother coming here. He wanted to finish quickly and leave, so he took a few steps forward and casually asked, “How’s your leg lately?”

Gu Hanchen turned around, his eyes filled with disgust. He didn’t want to look at this person for another moment. “It’s the same.”

Anger surged in Gu Hanchen’s father. He couldn’t talk back though. What he hated the most was Gu Hanchen’s arrogant attitude. He was his father, who did he think he was looking down on? With his sarcastic words and glum attitude—no wonder he was so unlikable. Just seeing him was annoying.

Had he known this was the kind of person he’d be, he shouldn’t have been born.

Remembering his purpose for being here, he suppressed his displeasure and continued, “Your younger brother has already gotten engaged. He’ll be getting married next month, settling down and forming a family.”

“You’re older than he is, and this situation can’t go on. I’m your father, and I still have to plan for you.”

Gu Hanchen’s father spoke from on high, as if pitying Gu Hanchen. “I’ve found you a fiancée. She’s the youngest daughter of the An family. Their background matches ours, and she’s a well-behaved and sensible girl. She would be a good match for you.”

“You’ll meet her tomorrow. Your Uncle An finally agreed. Don’t embarrass me.”

Coldness radiated from Gu Hanchen’s eyes, deep and icy. His fingers clenched the armrests of his wheelchair tightly, wishing he could kill this man and see what kind of filth was inside him.

The An family was undeniably wealthy, but everyone knew that their youngest daughter was mentally retarded, often in a daze and spending long periods in the hospital.

Pushing him into such a situation was something only a scoundrel would do.

He scrutinized his father, trying to see how filthy he had become. Even mud and garbage wouldn’t stink as much as he did. Unfortunately, he was this man’s biological son. Sharing the same blood as such a person made him utterly disgusted.

Gu Hanchen’s father couldn’t contain his anger and huffed, “What’s with that look? Who gave you the nerve to glare at me like that? Look at how disgusting you are!”

“I’ll tell you this, I’m your father. As long as you bear the Gu surname, you must respect me and obediently follow my words!”

“Miss An does have some minor issues, but you’re in no position to be picky. Given that you have accomplished nothing and are still a cripple, it’s pure luck for you to even be able to marry her.”

“How dare you have standards? You should face reality. Why can’t you be more like your brother? Both of you are from the Gu family, but he’s so outstanding, while you’re just a disappointment. Don’t blame me, you can only accept your fate.”

Gu Hanchen’s father panted angrily. This son should have been thrown out long ago. He had been eating and drinking for free in the Gu family without contributing anything for years. It was only right for him to be sacrificed. He discussed it with the An family, concluding that since Miss An was not suitable for marriage anyway, as nobody in high society wanted a madwoman, it would be perfect if Gu Hanchen married her. After all, one was mad and the other was crippled, what was inappropriate about that? Once this deal was settled, they could form a marriage alliance with the An family, elevating the Gu family to new heights. He wouldn’t give up easily.

Sending away a worthless son was a very worthwhile deal, so Gu Hanchen had better be obedient.
