After finishing his performance, Luo Ning’s gaze returned to being clear and obedient.

Director Chen Han exchanged a glance with the assistant director and reached a decision. Based on the current auditions, Luo Ning’s acting was the most aligned with the character they envisioned. Finally, they had found a suitable candidate. Chen Han was pleased but maintained a calm expression.

“You can go back for now and wait for news.”

Luo Ning said goodbye and exited the room, feeling relatively happy. Having been in the entertainment industry for so long, he could read the room and sensed that the director was satisfied. Unless something unexpected happened, he stood a good chance of being selected. He might get the news in two days if all went well.

After Luo Ning left, others continued to come in for auditions. Their acting was rather immature. When playing the celestial master, they showed no expression, and when portraying the demonic cultivator, they could only contort their faces, which was painful to watch. Chen Han shook his head.

Currently, only Luo Ning’s interpretation resonated as suitable for the second male lead. Another young actor, Han Ke, was also decent. Han Ke’s performance was youthful, and he brought a large fanbase. Once filming started, audience reactions would need to be considered.

The assistant director suggested, “Why don’t we just go with Han Ke? Casting Luo Ning is too risky. What if the audience rejects him? The show won’t achieve its expected results.”

Chen Han sighed. “You’ve seen it yourself. Luo Ning is not just an ordinary pretty face. The online backlash may be strong now, but once the character is revealed, the reversal will be even greater.”

The assistant director said, “But this is the second male lead, which already has a fanbase from the book. If we add the traffic that Han Ke brings, our show will have built-in popularity.”

Chen Han thought for a moment. The assistant director wasn’t entirely wrong, but he remembered the amazement he felt at Luo Ning’s acting today. He felt that only Luo Ning could deliver the unexpected results the role demanded.

Despite the current online disdain and ridicule aimed at Luo Ning, true pearls wouldn’t gather dust. Given the opportunity, they would shine one day.

After weighing the pros and cons, Chen Han decided to give it one more shot. Relying solely on popular young actors wasn’t as valuable as introducing new faces.

…

Luo Ning had confidence in his abilities. He liked the role but also felt a bit anxious. After all, in the entertainment industry, talent was important, but fairness was not guaranteed, with many factors at play.

When Luo Ning received the notification two days later, he finally breathed a sigh of relief, a smile breaking through in his eyes.

To avoid any unexpected situations, he and the others wanted to sign the contract as soon as possible. There had been instances in the past where opportunities hadn’t truly landed in his hands, and the male lead and second lead could be swapped out at the last minute.

His manager was extremely surprised to learn that Luo Ning had secured the second male lead role through his own efforts. That was a significant role in a big-budget production with plenty of screen time and an opportunity to work with renowned directors and award-winning actors.

Once the news broke, many people were clamoring to get into the production, yet Luo Ning had unexpectedly landed such a good role.

With this, and given that Luo Ning hadn’t caused any trouble recently, his manager began to reevaluate him. The company held a small meeting and planned not to let Luo Ning sit on the sidelines any longer.

The manager estimated that after participating in this big-budget production, Luo Ning would definitely gain considerable popularity. He wanted to capitalize on that momentum by starting to secure more resources for Luo Ning.

In addition to the lipstick advertisement, he also landed a magazine cover—a domestic fashion magazine that consistently received great responses, ranking second among its peers.

Luo Ning could tell that his manager was putting in a lot of effort to provide him with these resources.

“This is the best test the company could give you, so be careful. If you mess up like before, they’ll completely give up on you.”

“Now that your career is finally showing signs of improvement, can’t you just focus on your work?”

“With your looks, if you just improve your emotional intelligence, you wouldn’t be in this situation.”

Luo Ning nodded. “I understand, Brother Wang. I’ve thought it through.”

The manager said, “I’ve requested the company to send you an assistant.”

“If you perform well, you’ll be assigned an apartment.”

Previously, he had to manage everything alone, which was indeed tough, but Luo Ning had gotten used to it. He didn’t blame the company. If he hadn’t created any value, no one would waste resources on him. It was a harsh reality that only by proving his ability would others invest in him.

Luo Ning finalized the date to join the production, which was next week. His assistant also arrived. She was a round-faced young girl who appeared very gentle.

“Ning Ning, hello. I’m Xia Ying, your assistant. I’ll be responsible for arranging your schedule from now on.”

Xia Ying’s voice was nervous. She had seen news online about Luo Ning having a bad temper and being difficult to work with. She was worried about being put in a tough spot. But upon meeting him in person, her mood eased a bit. She thought this young man was really well-behaved.

With such a delicate and charming face, he looked especially cute when he smiled.

Luo Ning reassured her, “You don’t need to be so formal. Just treat me like a friend.”

Having an assistant certainly made life much easier for Luo Ning. With limited time before he started filming, he was able to squeeze in a photo shoot for a magazine cover.

The theme of this issue was roses. The person in charge had noticed Luo Ning’s charm after watching his lipstick advertisement and felt that he was suitable for the cover.

This rose wasn’t the traditional fragrant and romantic type but rather a deep abyss rose—beautiful yet thorny, with dark colors and a thick alluring scent. Behind him were vines binding him, his eyes outlined in crimson. The beautiful figure was both proud and dangerous. Descending into the abyss meant certain death, yet that extreme beauty also carried an inexplicable allure, tempting one to slowly sink into decadence.

The colors in the images weren’t particularly light, but they resonated deeply.

It was thorny yet captivating.

Everyone on set (for the magazine shoot) was mesmerized, their eyes filled with astonishment. It was simply too enticing.

This kind of beauty knew no boundaries. Who said only women could be described as beautiful? Now with men exuding charm, it was as if women had no chance at all.

This time, Luo Ning’s manager accompanied him. Watching Luo Ning, with his stunning appearance and captivating gaze, it was clear he resembled the most wickedly beautiful flower.

The manager was completely taken aback and finally understood why Luo Ning had secured the second male lead role. Compared to before, he seemed like a completely transformed person.

…

Ye Xingzhou took off his costume and automatically glanced at the little stool where that young actor used to sit. It was empty, and the chatty young actor was no longer there.

For some reason, when the young actor truly left his line of sight, he didn’t feel happy at all. Instead, he felt a sense of loss and unease, as if something was missing.

Ye Xingzhou frowned and picked up his phone to check. His thin lips pressed tightly together, showing his displeasure.

No calls had come in.

What was going on with the young actor? It had been so long, yet there was no phone call, not even a text message.

This wasn’t normal. Didn’t the young actor like him? Wasn’t he reluctant to part ways?

Shouldn’t he be feeling down about not seeing him every day, eagerly wanting to chat on the phone or invite him out for dinner?

Now it was as if he had evaporated from the world. All his previous infatuation seemed to have disappeared.

Ye Xingzhou tightened his grip on the screen, feeling confused and irritated. He couldn’t help but wonder if the young actor’s phone was lost or if he was just too busy lately.

But even if he was busy, there should still be time to make a call. What an unqualified suitor!

What if the young actor lost interest in him because he had never responded? Perhaps he had gone off to pursue someone else.

Regardless of the reason, Ye Xingzhou’s expression grew even more serious.

He occasionally glanced at his phone, subconsciously waiting for a call to come in, but there was none. A day passed, then three days, then a week, as if he had been forgotten.

Ye Xingzhou’s aura grew colder and colder. This was too much! That person was heartless!

He tapped the screen, his heart feeling like ants were crawling over it. This feeling was unpleasant. He held back for a moment, thinking maybe it was better to take the initiative and call to check on the junior.

His finger hesitated, his expression conflicted. Just as Ye Xingzhou was about to press the button, a message notification rang out. That familiar profile picture finally sent him a message.

Ye Xingzhou’s eyes brightened as he quickly opened it.

It was a photo of Luo Ning making a peace sign, wearing a white ancient costume, his long hair cascading behind him. His handsome face sparkled with a slight glow, and his lips were slightly turned up.

“Brother Ye, I’ve been at home for the past couple of days. Now, I’m in the set of Immortal Questions. How’s your filming going?”

Ye Xingzhou’s cold expression finally softened, shifting from gloomy to partly cloudy. It had been a long time since he had seen him, and he gently brushed his finger over the small face on the screen.

Now the young actor remembered him. At least he hadn’t completely forgotten him. Unfortunately, the message came too late. Ye Xingzhou felt a bit angry.

He tossed his phone aside but paused and picked it back up. After all, it was hard-won communication. If he didn’t respond, the young actor might not reach out again.

Ye Xingzhou directly initiated a video call. The fair, tender cheeks appeared on his screen. Seeing the smile on that face made him suddenly not feel angry.

He was smiling like a fool.

Ye Xingzhou mumbled something and asked, “You still remember me?”

His voice carried a trace of barely perceptible grievance and resentment.

Luo Ning didn’t notice anything amiss. He replied apologetically, “Brother Ye, I’m sorry. I’ve been so busy lately. I just joined the crew, and I’ve been occupied with the opening ceremony, memorizing lines, and taking promotional photos. Things have been all over the place.”

Ye Xingzhou noticed the exhaustion in his expression and the dark circles under his eyes, likely from staying up late. The irritation in his heart dissipated. After chatting with Luo Ning for a while and confirming how he was doing, his eyes darted around. He shifted his posture and hesitated for a moment before quietly asking, “So, how have you been feeling lately?”

Did he miss him when he couldn’t see him? Was he unhappy in the crew and wanted to meet up for comfort?

Ye Xingzhou was subtly fishing for information, his eyes filled with expectation.

But Luo Ning was completely oblivious. He smiled and said, “I’m doing great! Although I’ve been a bit busy, I’m really happy. The director and other actors are easy to get along with.”

“I feel very fulfilled. You don’t need to worry, Brother Ye.”

Ye Xingzhou’s expression darkened for a moment. Oh well, the young actor just didn’t know how to express himself.

He cleared his throat lightly. “I’m a bit free. I don’t have much going on this weekend. It wouldn’t be bad to go out for a walk.”

Luo Ning didn’t catch the underlying meaning and said enviously, “Brother Ye, you can actually relax this weekend. Unlike me, my schedule is packed.”

Ye Xingzhou took a deep breath. Forget it, this person was too stupid to say anything.

When Luo Ning was hung up on, he looked confused. Why was he unhappy again?
