Chapter 34: I’m Not Hungry, You Can Have It All

***

After casually getting through the morning, Chu Suhe grabbed a small bag and ran out of the classroom.

Xia Ruoming naturally knew where she went, and leisurely followed her.

After getting a portion of rice and some side dishes at the window, Xia Ruoming looked around the cafeteria and directly sat down next to Chu Suhe, who was in the corner.

Xia Ruoming could never have imagined that she would miss such unpalatable food years later, because in 2015, Zhejiang University’s cafeteria wasn’t really considered good… especially the Zijingang cafeteria.

“Wh… what is it, Classmate Ruoming?” Seeing Xia Ruoming sit beside her, Chu Suhe instinctively shrunk further into the corner.

“Is this all you’re eating for lunch? Forgot what I said?” Xia Ruoming’s face darkened when she saw the less than 1 yuan worth of stir-fried lettuce on Chu Suhe’s plate. This little girl really wanted to faint again and wait for her to come rescue her, huh.

“I remember! Classmate Ruoming said not to only eat pickles and white rice, now I have lettuce with pickles and white rice, so it’s not just pickles and white rice.” Chu Suhe looked at Xia Ruoming’s eyes through her glasses and bangs, puffing up her small chest as if she had a point.

“You…” Xia Ruoming held her forehead, almost feeling like she was going to laugh from frustration.

The most frustrating part was that thinking carefully about it, what she said was actually true!

“You don’t have much appetite?” Xia Ruoming asked somewhat casually.

“Um… um? No… not really…” Chu Suhe was stunned for a moment, not understanding why Xia Ruoming would ask this, then answered in a small voice, so quiet compared to before it was like a mosquito’s buzz.

“Then help me finish these, Fengwu brought me breakfast this morning, I’ve already eaten two meals, I’m not very hungry.” As she spoke, Xia Ruoming directly moved all the meat dishes from her plate to Chu Suhe’s plate, then pushed the pork rib soup in front of Chu Suhe, and then picked up the empty plate and walked away gracefully, waving at Chu Suhe.

“Class Monitor Chu, don’t waste food okay.” Although Xia Ruoming had walked far away, her voice still reached Chu Suhe’s ears.

Chu Suhe looked at the plate piled high in front of her and fell into deep thought.

Because she clearly heard Xia Ruoming’s stomach growling just now… or did she hear wrong?

But Xia Ruoming’s figure had already disappeared from the cafeteria. From her initial bewilderment to contemplation, she finally picked up her chopsticks and spoon, and began eating small bites at a time.

While Chu Suhe was enjoying her sumptuous lunch, even burping inelegantly from satisfaction, our Xia Ruoming was… munching on bread on the rooftop, having run away too hurriedly to even buy a box of milk.

The reason for not eating in the cafeteria was simply not wanting to make Chu Suhe feel uncomfortable, so she chose not to get another portion of food in the cafeteria, but instead ran to a place where no one was around to eat bread. Even though she herself was still standing in the rain, she still couldn’t bear to see the suffering in the world.

Perhaps some would say she’s being too much of a saint, but after experiencing the torment of her previous life and receiving help from those who could barely take care of themselves, Xia Ruoming understood one principle.

If everyone in this world were just sophisticated egoists, then this world would truly be beyond salvation.

Xia Ruoming probably couldn’t become a saint, and many times might not even meet the standards of an ordinary person, but she wouldn’t ignore those standing in the cold rain, nor would she mock those who truly wanted to be saints.

“Alone on the rooftop?”

Xia Ruoming heard a familiar voice behind her, so she turned around to look. He Ya was carrying a plastic lunchbox up to the rooftop and sat down on the long bench by the metal railing.

“Yeah, aren’t you too?”

“Ah… it’s all because that fool Ji Chuan, he made me lunch but wouldn’t come eat together.” He Ya’s voice was full of helplessness, seemingly complaining about that block of wood.

“By the way, want to have some?” He Ya opened the lunchbox and waved at Xia Ruoming.

She had seen the bread wrapper in Xia Ruoming’s hand as soon as she came up.

“He’s a really good person, and you two are a perfect match. Remember to make him study hard, don’t let him keep idling around all day.” Xia Ruoming leaned against the railing, took out a cigarette, and spoke to He Ya with some weightiness.

“You knew from the start that I liked Ji Chuan?” She finally asked the question that had been buried in her heart. Before this, Xia Ruoming had hardly been alone, so she hadn’t had the chance to ask.

She had hidden it so well and had never shown it, so how did Xia Ruoming know?

“Yes, I knew from the day you started liking him.” Xia Ruoming blocked the wind with her hand and lit the feminine cigarette.

“So… why did you want to match us up? Is it because of your relationship with Ji Chuan? But anyway… thank you still… Xiao Xiaxia~” He Ya wouldn’t have had the courage herself, and Ji Chuan was half a block of wood, if it weren’t for Xia Ruoming actively matching them up, they probably would have repeated the same pattern again until the very end, neither of them would have taken the initiative to speak up.

“Pft… Xiao Xiaxia? What kind of name is that!”

“Actually, it’s not like that.” Xia Ruoming’s voice sounded somewhat weathered as she slowly said to He Ya, “Do you know what’s the saddest thing in the human world?”

“That I’m right in front of you, but you don’t know I love you?”

“It’s when two people who clearly love each other can only reminisce about each other lonely years later.”

After all… in their previous life, that’s how it was.

He Ya nodded somewhat comprehendingly. She knew that even if she didn’t understand now it was okay, Xia Ruoming must have had her reasons for doing what she did, and she just needed to move forward with gratitude.

Then He Ya took up her spoon and scooped up two spoonfuls of rice, holding them to Xia Ruoming’s mouth.

“Eat some, Xiao Xiaxia. You look really hungry, how can someone with your figure not be hungry eating just this bit of bread?”

Xia Ruoming hesitated for a moment, but still ate two bites of He Ya’s lunch.

Just one taste and it was obviously not something that blockhead Ji Chuan could have made, it could only be Auntie Zhong’s cooking. As long as it wasn’t breakfast’s sweet and salty egg rolls and weird-flavored vegetable pancakes, the other dishes still tasted as good as ever.

“If your smoking habit isn’t too strong, you should quit.” He Ya quietly advised kindly while eating, “Good girls like Chu Suhe won’t like you smoking, and her health isn’t good to begin with, smoking isn’t good for people around you either.”

Xia Ruoming was stunned for a moment, the nearly finished cigarette in her hand dropped to the ground, then burned out its life, and was stepped on by Xia Ruoming.

“I’ll try my best.” Xia Ruoming responded somewhat listlessly, but her answer was completely different from what she had told Xu Fengwu that night.

“That’s right! If you keep smoking every day, as Susu’s new friend, I won’t approve of you two dating!” He Ya said to Xia Ruoming somewhat playfully, and then made a face after speaking.
