Chapter 19: How Did You Reject Her?

***

“What?” Xia Ruoming didn’t understand why Liu Ruoxue said such puzzling words.

“Still pretending in front of mom? Every time Chu Suhe is mentioned, your eyes start flickering. And about you and Xu Fengwu, do you really think mom doesn’t know everything?” Liu Ruoxue tapped Xia Ruoming’s head, “Having a romance during the best time of your life isn’t bad, mom didn’t stop you, but you said you’d prioritize your studies, so now you need to focus on your studies, understand?”

Xia Ruoming felt a bit awkward and was about to nod in agreement when Liu Ruoxue continued: “Don’t blame mom for being nosy, you like both of them, but you can’t have it both ways. Sooner or later you’ll have to make a choice, don’t make the other girl too sad.”

“I…” Just as Xia Ruoming was about to explain her situation with Xu Fengwu, she heard Liu Ruoxue muttering something about letting children make their own choices while heading back to her room, showing no intention of listening to her explanation.

Liu Ruoxue knew exactly what was in her daughter’s heart. How could she not know who her daughter liked? During the few parent-teacher meetings she attended, she could see the tenderness in Xia Ruoming’s eyes when sitting next to Xu Fengwu, it was impossible to hide. However, Xu Fengwu clearly seemed to think too highly of herself, how could she possibly accept her daughter’s pursuit? All those things Xia Ruoming did were just her being overly passionate.

She had known early on that Xia Ruoming was pursuing someone. Otherwise, how could her daughter, who usually turned into a couch potato at the mention of housework, be willing to work part-time at McDonald’s on weekends just for some money?

Extremely sensitive people can be moved by others’ self-indulgent performances, just like Liu Ruoxue herself. Otherwise, with her looks and campus admirers back then, she wouldn’t have ended up with Xia Jingsong. But Liu Ruoxue knew just from passing by that Xu Fengwu wasn’t that type of person. She might feel sad about losing something she once had, but she would never be swayed just because someone was kind to her.

A white moonlight isn’t so easy to pursue.

Staying at Zhong Hui’s house for a night, coming back with a new hairstyle and makeup, red eyes clearly showing she had not only cried but stayed up late, with a faint smell of alcohol, could those poor excuses Xia Ruoming made really fool Liu Ruoxue? She just didn’t want to burst this bubble.

She knew her daughter’s personality and believed she could adjust. So from the day she saw Xia Ruoming crying in her arms, she had quietly told Xia Jingsong not to ask about what happened yesterday, to act as if nothing had happened.

Although the reason Xia Ruoming cried in her arms that day wasn’t because of Xu Fengwu, and she didn’t know that Xia Ruoming had lived another life.

A heartbreak is also a good experience. Just treat it like a beautiful dream, when you wake up you still feel touched, but life must go on.

As for Chu Suhe, parents usually prevent such relationships between people of different social status. But from her daughter’s description, she seemed like a good girl, a bit naturally silly and innocent. Although the possibility of love being blind couldn’t be ruled out, if her daughter liked her, then let her be. She just worried that her daughter might want both, trying to chase Xu Fengwu while losing Chu Suhe, that feeling of gaining and losing is the most painful, Liu Ruoxue understood this better than anyone.

…

Meanwhile.

Xu Fengwu was sitting in the princess chair at the dining table, tilting her head back to compose herself.

“Xiao Feng, why have you been coming home alone recently?” Xu Fengwu’s mother Xu Yihan glanced outside the door. Usually, there was always a girl who liked to follow her daughter and help carry her bag, but lately, she hadn’t been seen.

Upon hearing these words, Xu Fengwu could no longer maintain her composure, and soft sobbing sounds filled the room.

“What’s wrong, why are you crying?” Xu Yihan sat next to Xu Fengwu, wiping her tears while asking gently.

Who knew that this wiping made Xu Fengwu cry even harder, not from sadness, but because Xu Yihan had forgotten she had just finished cutting chili peppers!

Yes, definitely her real mom.

Xu Fengwu, who had just suffered emotional trauma, now suffered physical trauma from her own mother, nearly having a breakdown.

After another round of rushing to the bathroom to wash up, Xu Fengwu finally calmed down and shared with Xu Yihan about recent events.

Of course, she didn’t tell everything, just gave a rough overview, and didn’t mention Xia Ruoming’s confession. In the story she told Xu Yihan, Xia Ruoming only saw her as a friend.

“So, she said she wants to cut ties with you?” After listening to Xu Fengwu’s story, Xu Yihan frowned.

“Mm…” Xu Fengwu answered softly. While telling Xu Yihan about recent events, her tears fell again, and her voice became somewhat choked.

“Alright, stop crying first, tell mom what exactly happened. Why does she want to cut ties with you?”

“It’s… it’s…” Xu Fengwu bit her lip but couldn’t say it.

Seeing her daughter’s expression, Xu Yihan felt her vague premonition finally came true.

“Your relationship wasn’t just friendship, was it?” Xu Yihan expressed her thoughts.

Xia Ruoming had pursued Xu Fengwu for 5 years, and Xu Yihan had watched Xia Ruoming grow up for 5 years. She had always felt that Xia Ruoming liked her daughter, even for best friends, who would be so good to someone?

In earlier years during birthday parties, Xu Yihan had secretly looked at the gifts Xu Fengwu received. From the moment she saw that Tiffany rose gold necklace, Xu Yihan had noticed Xia Ruoming’s unusual feelings, but she never really thought much about it, not believing kids these days could be so mature.

“No… I rejected her. That day after she confessed to me, she became like this the next day…” She ended up honestly revealing the truth she had intended to hide.

Xu Yihan shook her head helplessly. Wanting to maintain a relationship after confessing, if it wasn’t love, who would be willing to give so much? Her daughter’s princess-like personality, who knows who spoiled her into being like this.

But she knew Xia Ruoming’s personality best through these 5 years of interaction. Even if her daughter rejected her confession, she shouldn’t have become so cold, that shouldn’t be the kind of person she is…

“Tell mom what happened that day.” Xu Yihan stroked her daughter’s hair while comforting and asking gently.

“That day, after lunch…” Xu Fengwu’s teeth released her now-pale lips as she began to tell what happened that day, “Ruoming took me to the rooftop, where she said she had been preparing in her heart for 3 years, and if she didn’t say it once now, she might never have the chance again, so she confessed to me… After I rejected her, it became like this.”

Xu Yihan let out a long sigh. Someone who was determined one moment suddenly became distant from her daughter the next, if what happened on the rooftop hadn’t been hard to accept, how could it have turned out like this?

“How did you reject her?” Xu Yihan looked into Xu Fengwu’s eyes and asked a soul-striking question.
