Chapter 16: The North Wind Has Stopped, Our Story Has Ended

***

Xu Fengwu’s face instantly turned pale as she looked at Xia Ruoming in disbelief. All along, even when she used a commanding tone to communicate with Xia Ruoming, Xia Ruoming would obediently listen to her without any complaints.

Even when Xia Ruoming deleted her as a friend this morning and said some seemingly cold-hearted words, she just thought Xia Ruoming was throwing a tantrum. She believed that if she walked slowly and waited a little for Xia Ruoming, that foolish woman would continue to follow her like an idiot.

After all, how could someone forget another person so quickly?

She had thought that Xia Ruoming would definitely agree.

But things didn’t go as she wished. Xia Ruoming directly rejected her in front of everyone in the classroom, without giving her, Xu Fengwu, any face-saving way out. Moreover, it was done with a mocking tone, throwing back the words from the rooftop exactly as they were.

Xu Fengwu felt her nose stinging, with tears welling up in her eyes.

She had never felt so wronged before.

It wasn’t like this when she rejected Xia Ruoming before. She really just didn’t want to date right now, after rejecting her, why couldn’t they even remain friends?

Why could Xia Ruoming’s attitude change so drastically?

When she recalled Xia Ruoming’s morning statement that they were never friends, just familiar strangers, that feeling of wrongness grew even stronger.

Just last week she wanted to stick together every day, and now she’s completely changed her face, was she a Sichuan Opera performer? What right did she have to treat her like this?

“It’s okay, Fengwu, I’ll teach you,” Chen Tianhai, who was nearby, saw that Xia Ruoming seemed to have fallen out with Xu Fengwu and felt secretly delighted. Usually, Xia Ruoming always stuck close to Xu Fengwu, and he never had a chance to suck up to her. He even gave Xia Ruoming a contemptuous glance. Thinking that since Xu Fengwu was actively approaching, if you won’t suck up anymore, there are plenty of others who will.

Hearing a new bootlicker volunteer, Xia Ruoming was quite happy, at least she wouldn’t be bothered anymore. She even turned back to see who it was. When Xia Ruoming’s gaze crossed with Chen Tianhai, both were thinking exactly the same thing.

“Heh, idiot!”

“Get lost! Do we know each other?” Chen Tianhai was met with Xu Fengwu’s ice-cold stare that could freeze someone solid. After her gaze lingered on Xia Ruoming for half a second more, Xu Fengwu simply clenched her fist, walked around Chen Tianhai back to her seat, and stared darkly at her reference book.

“What are you doing, Fengwu? How could you actively go look for her? That’s so beneath you,” Li Jing saw Xu Fengwu actively seeking out Xia Ruoming only to come back embarrassed, and she was extremely anxious. “She’s already awful enough, taking just a few days to go after Chu Suhe, and you’re still actively seeking her out. She’ll only value you less!”

This time, Xu Fengwu didn’t agree with her view.

On the other side, by Xia Ruoming’s seat.

“Sis, you’re really skilled at playing hard to get. Look how anxious Xu Fengwu is. Just a few days have made more progress than your years of pursuit. Keep it up, big sis, I’ll always support your romance from behind. As for that cola hair washing thing, forget it, it was just a joke,” At this moment, Ji Chuan bounced over to Xia Ruoming’s side again, quietly chatting with her.

“Get lost, always learning the wrong things, just watched some drama courses and started talking nonsense, right? I told you, I don’t like her anymore, so stop meddling,” Xia Ruoming was truly exasperated with the unfocused Ji Chuan. She had already made it very clear, why couldn’t he understand simple words?

Ji Chuan approached again with a confused face: “No way, sis, are you running a fever? You’ve been chasing Xu Fengwu for so long, and finally there’s a chance where Xu Fengwu actively comes looking for you. Obviously, there was something more between you before, how can you just give up? This opportunity might slip away if you keep others hanging, sis, think about it again.”

“Do you remember what the weather was like on the day I confessed?” Xia Ruoming looked at the unfocused Ji Chuan and raised her eyebrows at him.

“Uh… sunny? What does that have to do with Xu Fengwu?”

“It was a sunny day with the north wind blowing, such a rare opportunity…”

“Chengdu’s mid-spring only has north wind for 3 days on average, after which the south wind brings in fresh air. Since it wasn’t successful, now that the north wind has stopped, my story with her has also ended… The north wind is still so cold.” While speaking, Xia Ruoming’s gaze carried a hint of reminiscence, “I’m not simply giving up this chance or deciding to forget her, but rather making peace with my past self.”

Ji Chuan: “…”

Somehow, Ji Chuan felt that the current Xia Ruoming had become a bit like those dead-faced teachers at the podium. Before, although she was constantly rejected by Xu Fengwu, she was always smiling, and even when feeling down, she would bounce back after a good sleep. Now she always has a droopy cat face and occasionally spouts some life philosophy, making Ji Chuan very uncomfortable.

“Are you really sure? 5 years, a full 5 years, you spent the most beautiful part of your life on her, and now when there’s finally hope, you want to give up?” Xia Ruoming wasn’t anxious, but Ji Chuan had become the king of anxiety, giving off a feeling of deep disappointment.

“A white moonlight… is ultimately just an unattainable white moonlight.” A voice filled with sorrow and melancholy reached Ji Chuan’s ears. Ji Chuan looked at Xia Ruoming gazing out the window, her face showing an extremely complex expression, her eyes filled with countless emotions, difficult to describe in words. Determination mixed with confusion, melancholy carried resignation, the ever-changing emotions made it hard for Ji Chuan to grasp.

Xu Fengwu’s window seat wasn’t far from Xia Ruoming, it was the seat Xia Ruoming had specifically exchanged with someone else because Xu Fengwu liked it, and she had even run errands for the original seat owner for several days.

Though Xia Ruoming and Ji Chuan’s conversation wasn’t loud, it still reached the keen-eared Xu Fengwu.

“The story… has ended? white moonlight is just white moonlight?” Xu Fengwu heard what she said and muttered to herself, “Shouldn’t she just be throwing a tantrum? We’ve already reached the point where we’re not even friends, does she want to go further and forget me completely? Impossible, she clearly said… clearly said…”

As Xu Fengwu spoke, she actually laid her head on the desk and began to sob quietly.

Nearby, Li Jing also noticed that this proud phoenix had curled up and started crying by herself. Her first reaction wasn’t to comfort Xu Fengwu, but to angrily rush over to confront Xia Ruoming.

“Hey! Xia Ruoming, can’t you see how upset you’ve made Xu Fengwu? Instead of going to comfort her, what are you doing here? Someone like you wanting to win over Xu Fengwu, keep dreaming!”

Xia Ruoming glanced at Li Jing, directly twisted her pointing hand behind her back, making Li Jing cry out in pain.

“I’m warning you, stop disgusting me, just seeing your face makes me want to vomit. If you like being her military advisor so much, go back to that. Don’t disgust me in front of my face. If you don’t want to take the college entrance exam, I don’t mind helping you with that.”

Li Jing looked at that face, the cold smile like a devil who had just crawled back from hell to the human world. The words that were about to leave her mouth were forcibly swallowed back. She had a feeling that if she really dared to continue cursing, Xia Ruoming would really carry out what she said.
