Chapter 107: The Sun and The Tower

***

As soon as she finished speaking, the tarot cards on the table, which were originally laid flat in a circle on the carpet, began to rotate.

Xu Fengwu only found it curious, she thought it was some kind of magic trick, after all, these kinds of shops always had some elements of magic in them.

“Then, I’ll choose this one.” Unlike Xia Ruoming who chose randomly, Xu Fengwu very seriously selected a card — following her sixth sense.

An Jinrou merely lifted her hand slightly, and that tarot card on the table flipped up.

On the card, a childlike figure rode a unicorn leaping out of the fence, transcending lost paths and death, gaining rebirth.

“【The Sun】. All stars shine bright, yet none compare to a single day’s light. This card corresponds to the Sun in astrology, and also corresponds to Apollo, the sun god in Greek mythology. The moon still needs to borrow the sun’s radiance, stars are too distant to reach, but the sun itself can illuminate darkness. The sun represents that light full of hope and optimism, which no darkness can block. Perhaps many have asked before, which is the best card in the Major Arcana, all cards have their reflections, but if I had to choose, I would say the Sun is the brightest card in the Major Arcana.”

“It’s a magical card. When you turn it over, it also represents that you already understand happiness is a choice rather than a result. That grey fence is the past that binds you, perhaps it’s the past you cannot look back upon. The sun rises after the moon sets, the unicorn leaps out from within the fence, the mist has long disappeared, you can now face those things you once feared.”

“The Sun is a card that contains many things, but its overall meaning is positive. However, I must also remind you of one thing.”

“You must understand, the sun is merely a celestial body, just like the stars and moon. For humans, whether it’s the moon or the sun, they are unreachable things. Unlike earthly objects, those celestial bodies are completely unattainable existences. Therefore, this Sun card might represent 【such radiance is only your fantasy】 or 【that kind of story is an unreachable future】, perhaps… this card only has psychological significance for you… what it represents may not necessarily become reality.”

“Are you saying my fortune will be good?” Xu Fengwu said, then immediately laughed self-mockingly.

Yes, of course a fortune teller would say the person coming for divination has good luck, then say it might just be psychological significance, isn’t that just saying the words aren’t to be taken seriously? She actually believed in something like divination, thinking about it now was quite laughable.

But what An Jinrou said next truly surprised her.

“Of course not, as we discussed earlier, your fate is different from normal situations, so I can only use the Octagonal Divination method.”

An Jinrou raised her hand again, and the card opposite to the Sun flipped up on its own, facing upward.

“The main fate card doesn’t represent your true destiny, because you still have a hidden fate card.”

Looking at the flipped tarot card, the solemnity behind An Jinrou’s veil increased several fold, that was definitely not a good omen.

“At an important divergence point, your fate might be changed, the things represented by the hidden fate card will replace your original destiny.”

Xu Fengwu looked at the card opposite, a tower reaching into the sky struck by lightning, the people who originally lived in the high tower falling from mid-air.

“【The Tower】. Tormented souls escape from the burning cage, but face a bottomless abyss ahead. Unlike the change implied by the Death card, the Tower only brings tragedy.” An Jinrou’s voice sounded again by Xu Fengwu’s ear.

“What we call tragedy is the destruction of originally beautiful things… originally stable things inexplicably dissipate, hard-won love suddenly disappears, cherished things turn to ashes in an instant… sudden disasters make past beautiful stable life vanish without a trace.”

“Although the Tower represents misfortune entangling whether upright or reversed, it also symbolizes that you have a chance to escape the cage. The tower struck by lightning is already tottering, if preparations are made, escaping from atop the tower is not impossible.”

“The Star representing freedom comes after the Tower, whether one can correctly choose the path is also the process of changing from Tower to Star. If you want to break free from past failures, you must first face the past, acknowledge its existence, see clearly the mistakes you’ve made.”

“Although the Tower often brings huge changes, these changes are not things ordinary people can accept, but pain and torment itself is teaching you to grow, accepting the past, then surpassing yourself, will let you, or perhaps you all live better in the future.”

“You all?”

An Jinrou abruptly mentioned “you all,” and Xu Fengwu became curious about this too, the divination was clearly for her alone, why would there be a result of “you all.”

“Hmm… secrets cannot be spoken.” An Jinrou made an expression of ‘don’t ask more,’ then seemed to think of something else, “Allow me to add one more thing, this customer likes women, correct?”

“Maybe…” Xu Fengwu gave an ambiguous answer, but the curiosity on her face increased several fold, as if trying to figure out how An Jinrou knew this.

“Hahaha… customer need not conceal it, I was just guessing. The Sun has a little-known upright meaning, it’s ‘same-sex love.'” An Jinrou laughed twice and explained to Xu Fengwu, “In the original tarot cards, the Sun card actually depicted two refined beautiful young men, not a boy seeking freedom.”

“Tarot cards are products born from the influence of ancient Greek culture. In ancient Greece, love between beautiful young men and refined nobles keeping beautiful young men was very normal, so in the original Sun card, two refined young men were also given special love. The moment I turned over your hidden fate card, I knew that perhaps the Sun’s interpretation might not take effect for you. How could the Sun symbolizing redemption and light appear together with the Tower? Thinking about it now, that Sun card, that card might represent that you have a special love.”

While listening to An Jinrou’s explanation, Xu Fengwu’s expression changed several times. If she wasn’t certain that she didn’t know this tarot card shop owner, she would have suspected the owner had secretly investigated her before saying these words.

“Since you have such a romance, how about I lend you a helping hand?” Looking at the doubtful Xu Fengwu, An Jinrou’s face revealed a playful smile.

“How much money?” The shop owner finally revealed her true purpose, how could there be someone who would run a shop without charging money — this was what Xu Fengwu thought, but the shop owner seemed to be quite accurate in her readings, spending a little money seemed harmless.

But An Jinrou only made a hushing gesture, and said softly to her: “Dear customer, I told you before, this shop doesn’t accept money, nor does it need customers like you to pay similar prices.”
