One day after their marriage, Ming Zhu decided to cook a meal for Lu Zhuofeng. Unfortunately, cooking wasn’t her strong suit. When she’d lived alone, her meals mostly consisted of takeout or simple dishes. Preparing a proper “three dishes and one soup” meal felt like climbing a mountain.

Determined, she downloaded several cooking apps and set them up on the kitchen counter. Following the steps meticulously, she dove into her culinary mission.

When Lu Zhuofeng came home, he removed his cap and walked into the kitchen. Leaning casually against the doorway, he watched her with amused curiosity. “Cooking for me?” he asked.

Ming Zhu turned to glance at him, smiling. “Want to eat or not?”

His eyes swept over the neatly arranged ingredients on the counter. Ming Zhu had an eye for presentation, carefully laying out everything in tidy portions. She followed the recipe step by step, relishing the process, though she worked very slowly.

Rolling up his sleeves, Lu Zhuofeng walked over and took the knife from her hands. “Let me do it.”

Ming Zhu smiled and stepped aside. “Sure.”

Despite being a soldier, Lu Zhuofeng handled the knife with remarkable speed and precision. The cuts were uniform, swift, and perfect. Ming Zhu pressed her forehead to his back and peeked over his shoulder, pouting slightly. “You barely ever cook. How are you so good at it?”

Unlike her…

Her grandmother had often scolded her for lacking the qualities of a “proper wife,” urging her to learn cooking. “Marriage is built on the basics of daily life,” she’d say, though Ming Zhu suspected her grandmother’s real motive was to get her to cook meals for her.

Lu Zhuofeng chuckled. “Who said I rarely cook? I learned back in high school when Grandpa was still alive. On weekends, I’d make meals for us. After joining the army, I didn’t get many chances to cook—too few breaks. Even during holidays, I’d eat out with Xu Jingyu and the others. Got a bit rusty.”

“Alright then.” Ming Zhu rubbed her face against his back playfully.

“Go put the iPad away,” he told her, ruffling her hair.

Obediently, Ming Zhu grabbed the iPad from the counter, tossed it onto the couch, and ran back into the kitchen.

By then, Lu Zhuofeng had started stir-frying.

Ming Zhu couldn’t resist snapping a few photos from behind. His tall, lean frame was striking even from the back. She stared at her phone screen, a smile creeping across her face, then sent the pictures to a group chat.

Ming the Star: Look at Major Lu cooking. You all should come over for dinner sometime.

You Xiaohuan: I feel like you’re just showing off.

Tang Xiaoxin: That figure! That posture! Tomorrow, I’m making Tang Yu cook for me!

You Xiaohuan: Are you showing off too?

Tang Xiaoxin: Of course! I’m the queen of showing off! (insert pride emoji here)

Ming the Star: …
You Xiaohuan: …
Chat ends.

Turning around, Lu Zhuofeng caught her. “Sneaking pictures of me?”

Ming Zhu froze. She’d turned the volume way down—how had he noticed? Then again, he was a special forces soldier. With his sharp instincts, he was anything but ordinary. She gave him a sheepish look. “What, I can’t take a picture of my own husband?”

Lu Zhuofeng chuckled, still stirring the ribs in the pan. “Sure, call me something nice, and you can take as many as you want—even without clothes.”

Ming Zhu’s face turned red. He was teasing her again! She muttered, “Shameless.”

Still grinning, he called over his shoulder, “Hand me a plate.”

The plate was within his reach, but Ming Zhu handed it over anyway, figuring he just liked asking her for small favors. As she approached, he caught her wrist and pulled her into his arms. Holding her close, he leaned down to kiss her lips softly. “What was that you just called me?”

“…Meow,” she murmured, embarrassed.

Their eyes met for a few seconds, and Ming Zhu blushed. Lu Zhuofeng licked his lips and asked, “Still want to eat?”

“Of course,” she replied.

“Then no more nonsense,” he teased.

“…”

He always had the last word! Huffing, Ming Zhu gave him a gentle push. “Hurry up. I’m hungry.”

Lu Zhuofeng chuckled, plating the ribs and cooling a piece for her to try. “Want a taste?”

Ming Zhu took a bite, mumbling around the mouthful, “Delicious…”

The soup was already simmered to perfection. Lu Zhuofeng ladled a bowl for her and placed it on the table. “Drink this first. No need to wait for me—I’ll finish the vegetables and join you.”

Ming Zhu nodded but sneaked another rib before wandering back to the kitchen to watch him.

When the meal—three dishes and a soup—was ready, Ming Zhu took a picture and posted it to her social media.

Her rarely updated profile immediately attracted attention. Tang Xin commented, “Your husband’s cooking skills are amazing!”

Many mutual friends chimed in when they realized Major Lu had done the cooking. The comments grew more lively by the second.

As Ming Zhu scrolled through them, Lu Zhuofeng confiscated her phone. “No more until you finish eating.”

After dinner, Lu Zhuofeng washed the dishes and dragged Ming Zhu off the couch. “Time for a walk.”

Ming Zhu knew he disliked how much time she spent sitting at her desk and wanted her to move around more. But she had been to the gym just two days ago and wasn’t in the mood. Clinging to his hands, she whined, “Why? You’re the one who ate three bowls of rice—you need the exercise, not me!”
