“Tian Xie… did you hear something? It sounded like… knocking,” Su Fei Fei said nervously. Midnight, heavy rain, lightning, thunder… In a house that never had guests, the sound of knocking at such an hour made her heart race uncontrollably.

“Ignore it,” Ye Tian Xie replied casually. When he used to live alone, occasional knocks on the door weren’t uncommon—people asking for directions, knocking on the wrong door, or the occasional sales pitch. He never responded to any of them. The doorbell had long been forcibly removed by him.

“But who could it be at this hour? Could it be…” Su Fei Fei’s body unconsciously leaned closer to Ye Tian Xie. Without realizing it, she was nearly pressed against him. Her growing unease made her yearn for the comfort of his embrace.

“A stormy night like this is ideal for avoiding surveillance, obscuring sight and sound, and erasing traces. So, under certain conditions, a stormy night is actually the best time for murder,” Ye Tian Xie said calmly, his eyes half-open. “But don’t worry. This house is pretty sturdy. Even if someone really wanted to break in, as long as we don’t open the door, they won’t be able to do much.”

Ye Tian Xie’s words made Su Fei Fei’s heart pound even faster. Her lips had begun to turn pale. She inhaled softly and reached for Ye Tian Xie’s arm, pulling it into her embrace. Lowering her head, she rested against his shoulder. Only then did her anxiety ease slightly. “Ten years ago… my mother died on a stormy night like this, with thunder and rain…”

Ye Tian Xie’s heart trembled slightly. He couldn’t help but reach out with his other hand, placing it gently on her smooth, rounded shoulder, comforting her shadowed heart.

Thud!

Thud!

Thud!

The knocking continued, the sound neither heavy nor light. It wasn’t harsh but also not gentle. As the knocking persisted, Ye Tian Xie’s brow furrowed deeper. The knocking had an eerily uniform rhythm—so precise it was almost unbelievable. The interval between each knock was exactly the same, as if it was being produced by a machine with impeccable calculation.

Ye Tian Xie suddenly realized that this knocking was far from ordinary. A growing sense of vigilance began to settle in his heart.

“Are you scared?” Ye Tian Xie asked softly.

“Mm…” Su Fei Fei replied in a quiet voice, her body continuing to inch closer to him, either consciously or unconsciously.

Ye Tian Xie sat up from the bed, grabbed his jacket, and draped it over himself. He reached over to turn on the light. The dim bedroom was suddenly bathed in brightness. In a low voice, Ye Tian Xie said, “Fei Fei, I’ll go check it out.”

Su Fei Fei threw off her blanket and, disregarding her exposed state, hurriedly grabbed his arm. “Don’t go… I-I’ll go with you. Being alone… I’ll be even more scared.”

Her flimsy nightgown was tightly stretched across her chest, the contours of her full bosom clearly visible, along with two faintly pink protrusions. Ye Tian Xie’s throat went dry. Meeting Su Fei Fei’s eyes filled with nervousness, he nodded. He then found a large enough jacket to cover her, pulling it over her shoulders. Holding her hand, he led her toward the front door of the house.

Thud!

Thud!

Thud!

The knocking continued, its frequency unwavering from start to finish. Ye Tian Xie moved forward with steps so light they were nearly silent, while Su Fei Fei, despite her efforts to tread softly, couldn’t avoid the sound of her slippers scuffing against the floor. Just as they reached the middle of the living room, the knocking suddenly stopped.

Su Fei Fei’s hands, which were tightly clutching Ye Tian Xie’s left arm, tensed even more. It wasn’t that she was particularly timid—any girl facing such a situation would naturally feel immense tension and fear. Ye Tian Xie patted the back of her hand, his voice light and unconcerned as he said, “Relax. Even if Spider-Man is standing outside, I’ll turn him into a dead spider within ten seconds.”

Su Fei Fei let out a faint smile, her grip noticeably relaxing.

As they reached the door, Ye Tian Xie didn’t immediately open it. Instead, he peered through the peephole. Despite the torrential rain outside, the residential area remained brightly lit, and under the ample lighting, the area in front of his door was completely empty.

Ye Tian Xie’s brow furrowed deeply. He straightened up without a sound and made a silencing gesture toward Su Fei Fei. Then, he closed his eyes, focusing his senses on everything outside the door. The sound of the downpour and the constant rumbling of thunder did nothing to hinder his perception, but even after nearly half a minute, he detected no unusual movements.

This uncertainty only made Ye Tian Xie’s frown deepen further. Reaching for the wall, he turned on the living room lights. Bathed in the brightness, he remained silent for a moment before saying to Su Fei Fei, “They’ve probably left. Let’s go back to bed.”

With his thoughts preoccupied and Su Fei Fei practically glued to him, they began walking back toward the bedroom. However, just as they reached the bedroom doorway, the eerie knocking resumed. The same intensity, the exact same rhythm, without the slightest deviation. Ye Tian Xie’s steps came to an abrupt halt.

It felt as though… a pair of eyes was watching their every move. When they approached, the knocking ceased. When they moved far enough away, it began again.

“Tian Xie…” Su Fei Fei raised her head, her eyes filled with nervousness as she looked at Ye Tian Xie’s increasingly solemn expression. It was a look she rarely saw on his face.

A faint, icy smile curled at the corner of Ye Tian Xie’s lips. He shook his head slightly and said, “A clever trick… but if you dare play this kind of game with me, you’d better be prepared for the consequences.”

With that, he swiftly turned back, pulling Su Fei Fei along as they headed toward the door. As they reached the center of the living room, the knocking stopped once more. In that instant, Ye Tian Xie suddenly released Su Fei Fei. She let out an involuntary cry of surprise as he lunged forward. His explosive speed was terrifyingly fast, a burst of power that made his body shoot forward like a rocket, at a pace no ordinary person could comprehend.

He didn’t bother opening the door—doing so would waste precious moments. As he reached the door, his eyes immediately locked onto the peephole. What he saw was the dim glow of the streetlights and the rain-soaked ground.

Still, there was no one there.

The startled Su Fei Fei rushed to Ye Tian Xie as fast as she could, clinging to him, panting for breath. At this moment, being by his side was the only thing that made her feel less afraid.

Ye Tian Xie grabbed Su Fei Fei’s hand and took a few steps back, positioning her safely behind him. With his other hand, he grasped the doorknob and silently turned it, opening the door just a crack—so small it could barely be called an opening.

The motion of the doorknob and the opening of the door didn’t make the slightest noise. Ye Tian Xie had the confidence to face any enemy, but that didn’t mean he was arrogant or careless. His caution remain unwavering, especially when faced with a series of unknown variables like this.

Cold wind rushed through the tiny gap in the door, blowing Ye Tian Xie’s hair back. His sharp gaze pierced through the sliver of space, scanning outside. Behind him, Su Fei Fei, trembling with nervousness, could clearly sense that the moment Ye Tian Xie looked through the crack, his body stiffened, and his expression became one of deep astonishment.

“Tian… Tian Xie…” Su Fei Fei whispered in a voice so small it was barely audible, her hands clutching his arm tightly in her unease.

With a face full of peculiar surprise, Ye Tian Xie opened the door completely.

Wind mixed with light raindrops swirled into the room. Through the open door, Su Fei Fei first saw the villa across the way. Then her gaze lowered…

A bolt of lightning lit up the scene at just the right moment, illuminating the petite figure of a young girl. She stood silently in the rain, unmoving, letting the downpour soak her hair and purple dress. She was so still that even with the door open and the two people standing before her, she remained motionless.

At that moment, neither Su Fei Fei nor Ye Tian Xie knew how to react.

“Tian Xie, she…” Su Fei Fei instinctively turned to Ye Tian Xie as she looked at the eerily quiet girl. On this stormy night filled with lightning and thunder, could this small child have been the one knocking? It explained why nothing was visible through the peephole—her petite frame was too short to reach its height.

Perhaps spurred by Su Fei Fei’s voice, the girl finally reacted. She lifted her head, revealing a delicate, milk-white face. Her clothing, drenched by the rain, clung tightly to her tender body, outlining her petite frame and slender waist without reservation. Her lace-patterned purple dress, soaked to translucence, left her soft arms and bare shoulders exposed. Though her long hair was thoroughly wet, it remained smooth and beautiful, framing her face.

Her appearance was stunningly refined, almost excessively so. She resembled an exquisite doll made to dance in the palm of your hand, innocent and flawless, or a budding rose about to bloom. Yet, this beautiful doll lacked two vital, sparkling features…

Her eyes.

On her upturned face, her eyes remained tightly shut, without the slightest hint of openness. Beneath the closed lids, long, thin lashes lay like two delicate fans.

Ye Tian Xie carefully scanned the surroundings, ensuring no one else was nearby. Suppressing the deep confusion in his heart, he crouched slightly and gently asked, “Little girl, what’s your name? Why are you here… Did you get lost?”

There was no response. However, as Ye Tian Xie’s voice reached her, he distinctly saw the girl’s body tremble violently, as if shivering from the cold.

Seeing the girl drenched in the rain tugged at Su Fei Fei’s heart. She stepped forward and took the girl’s hand. “Tian Xie, let’s bring her inside first. She’s just a child—she’ll get sick in this rain.”
