- 194 - The Knock on a Stormy Night (Part 1)
Deep into the silent night, dark clouds gathered, obscuring all light under their oppressive weight.
Finally, a bolt of lightning split the darkness, accompanied by scattered raindrops. Before long, the light drizzle transformed into a torrential downpour.
The clock struck midnight—precisely twelve. The sound of the pouring rain, coupled with increasingly loud thunder, erased all traces of midnight’s stillness.
Guo Guo, awakened by the thunder, crouched by the window. Her small face was pressed against the glass, and her eyes sparkled with excitement as she watched the lightning illuminating the night sky.
“Wow! So beautiful.”
The thunder and lightning that would scare most children her age had become a source of pure joy for her.
Ye Tian Xie buried his head tightly under a thin blanket, trying to block out the rain and thunder that disrupted his sleep. Having overly sensitive senses often proved to be more of a curse than a blessing. Even slight disturbances could awaken him, let alone a thunderstorm.
“Master, is that lightning?”
“Yes,” Ye Tian Xie replied weakly.
“Master, why does lightning fall from the sky? It’s so strange.”
“…I don’t know.”
“Master, I want to go outside and have a look…”
“Mm…” Ye Tian Xie groaned unconsciously.
Whoosh…
The window was suddenly opened by Guo Guo. A gust of cold wind, carrying raindrops, rushed into the room. Ye Tian Xie’s bed was near the window, and the rain-drenched him completely, jolting him awake from his drowsiness.
With a sharp slam, Ye Tian Xie shut the window. Grabbing Guo Guo by her tiny waist, he lifted her and tossed her onto the bed. His tone turned stern as he commanded, “Guo Guo, sleep!”
“But… but I want to watch!” Guo Guo crawled back up from the bed, her eyes filled with tears.
“It’s just thunder. There will be plenty more in the future,” Ye Tian Xie said as he tucked Guo Guo under her small blanket. Lying back on his own bed, he covered his head with his blanket again.
Knock, Knock. Knock, Knock, Knock…
The sound of knocking echoed through the room, urgent and rapid. At the same time, a bolt of lightning tore through the night sky, casting eerie brightness, followed by a deafening roar of thunder.
The knocking paused momentarily as the thunder boomed, then resumed with even greater urgency. “Tian Xie, Tian Xie… Open the door, Tian Xie!”
“Huh? That’s Fei Fei-jiejie’s voice!” Guo Guo, who was already wide awake, sat up suddenly. She floated lightly from the bed and drifted toward the door. Because it was bedtime, her petite, delicate, snow-white body wasn’t wearing any clothes. Guo Guo never avoided such things in front of Ye Tian Xie, which was an enduring torment for him. He could see and touch her, but there was nothing he could do beyond that…
Ye Tian Xie got up reluctantly and opened the door. Standing outside was Su Fei Fei, dressed in a thin silk nightgown, her arms crossed protectively over her chest. Just as she was about to speak, a thunderous crack of lightning roared. With a startled cry, she threw herself onto Ye Tian Xie, clinging tightly to him, her limbs wrapped around his body, trembling slightly.
The summer rain brought heat with it, and Ye Tian Xie wasn’t wearing a shirt. In her hurry, Su Fei Fei hadn’t put on a bra, and her silk nightgown was as thin as it could be. Her ample chest pressed directly against Ye Tian Xie’s bare chest without any barrier. He could distinctly feel the softness and the subtle contours of her form.
Most girls fear thunder, and Su Fei Fei was no exception. Her fear was amplified due to her mother’s death and countless past traumas. When the first clap of thunder struck, it jolted her awake, and her first thought was to run to Ye Tian Xie.
“Miss Su, wrapping yourself around a man like this… is quite dangerous,” Ye Tian Xie said as he spread his hands wide to avoid accidentally touching her body. With her current outfit, any touch would feel like touching her bare skin. The soft pressure against his chest, combined with the faint protrusions, sent his mind into chaos as he desperately tried to focus elsewhere.
Su Fei Fei’s arms were tightly wrapped around Ye Tian Xie’s neck, her long, snow-white legs clinging securely to his body. Finally recovering from her initial fright, she realized how inappropriate her posture was. Flustered, she scrambled off Ye Tian Xie, her fair neck and delicate face flushing a deep, rosy red.
“I… I’m scared of the thunder,” Su Fei Fei muttered softly, lowering her head. One hand instinctively reached out to grab Ye Tian Xie’s clothing but instead touched his bare skin. Startled, she quickly withdrew her hand as if electrocuted, stammering, “Why… why aren’t you wearing any clothes?”
“In this heat, are you expecting me to sleep with clothes on?” Ye Tian Xie replied helplessly. In the darkness, he could vaguely make out Su Fei Fei’s silhouette. His mind involuntarily replayed the scene from the afternoon when Su Fei Fei had stood naked before him.
Su Fei Fei bit her lip lightly and whispered in a soft, barely audible voice, “Tian Xie… Can you sleep with me tonight?”
“I have very poor self-control. If you don’t mind something happening, then sure,” Ye Tian Xie replied with a raised eyebrow, his tone full of helplessness.
Su Fei Fei raised her arms to hug her chest, hesitated for two seconds, and then lightly huffed, “Hmph, I don’t care. Tonight, I’m sleeping with you… But you’re not allowed to touch me! If you dare touch me… I… I won’t cook for you anymore! Hmph!”
After finishing, she hurriedly bypassed Ye Tian Xie, ran to his bed, grabbed the blanket, and tightly wrapped her flawless figure in it. She then lay down on the bed, curled up under the blanket, and silently peeked at Ye Tian Xie’s silhouette.
Ye Tian Xie rubbed the tip of his nose, saying nothing. He silently returned to the bed, lay down beside Su Fei Fei, and closed his eyes without making any further movement.
A flash of lightning streaked through the sky, causing Su Fei Fei to visibly flinch. By the brief illumination of the lightning, she caught a clear view of the bare upper body of the man beside her, and her heartbeat quickened.
Boom…
The delayed rumble of thunder reverberated, shaking her nerves. Su Fei Fei closed her eyes as her mind involuntarily returned to a stormy night from her past—the night when she lost her mother. Thunderstorms always brought her intense fear, leaving her sleepless as she curled up alone under her blanket. Even on rare occasions when she managed to sleep from sheer exhaustion, nightmares inevitably plagued her.
Tonight was the first rainy night since then that someone was by her side. It was also her first time sharing a bed with a man. However, Ye Tian Xie’s unnerving stillness only heightened her tension. Extending an arm from her tightly wrapped blanket, she gently nudged Ye Tian Xie and whispered, “Tian Xie, are you asleep?”
“Mm…” Ye Tian Xie responded faintly. With a woman lying beside him, how could his mind truly be at ease? Sleep was utterly elusive for him as well.
“Hmph! Liar. If you were asleep, how could you talk?”
“Sleep talking.”
“You… you perverted wolf who harasses innocent girls on the street. Now that you have a beautiful woman lying beside you, you suddenly pretend to be all proper. Hmph!” Su Fei Fei pouted slightly, recalling their first encounter, and chuckled softly. Her laughter, crisp like the sudden breaking of a silver bell, and her fleeting smile illuminated her face like a moon breaking through the clouds, captivatingly beautiful.
Ye Tian Xie opened his eyes and gazed at her. In the darkness, his eyes faintly glimmered with an eerie, enchanting light. “Are you suggesting… I should do something I’m supposed to?”
“You… you wouldn’t dare!” Su Fei Fei hastily retreated under the blanket, realizing that in her rush to this room, her nightgown was hardly adequate to cover her body. Beneath it, there was absolutely nothing. Her deep-seated fear of lightning had completely robbed her of the courage to run back to change her clothes.
Ye Tian Xie leaned slightly closer, his tone laced with mischief. Half-seriously, he smirked and said, “Miss Su, it’s not like I haven’t seen or touched your body before. Do I really need to…”
“Y-you-you! Don’t say it!!”
Flustered, Su Fei Fei lunged forward, pulling the blanket open and covering Ye Tian Xie’s mouth with her hands. In her panic, she nearly threw herself onto him to silence his next words. Despite her lively personality and occasional provocative attire, Su Fei Fei was inherently traditional. Even the slightest verbal tease was too much for her to handle.
Now, the two were pressed intimately close. The fragrance of Su Fei Fei’s body—delicate like orchids and musk—filled Ye Tian Xie’s senses. The lightning’s glow poured over Su Fei Fei, highlighting her flawless and mesmerizing curves, exuding an indescribable allure.
Skin to skin contact sparked an ambiguous atmosphere between the two. Su Fei Fei finally withdrew her hands, lying back under her blanket as she murmured softly, “You big pervert…Hmph, would you dare take responsibility for me?”
Ye Tian Xie remained silent.
Her words brought an uncomfortable quiet between them. Sharing the same roof and now the same bed, their relationship should have progressed naturally. Yet, an insurmountable chasm stood between them. More precisely, it stood in Ye Tian Xie’s heart.
For a stranger, he could act recklessly without hesitation. But with Su Fei Fei, the girl who now shared his bed, he suppressed all inappropriate thoughts. Her image began surfacing in his mind more and more frequently. It was because he cared that he couldn’t cross the line or do anything that might hurt her.
He was still waiting for her return… his Xian’er.
And Su Fei Fei had said she would wait with him, no matter how long it took, until Xian’er came back…
The lightning outside showed no signs of abating, its flashes repeatedly illuminating the figures lying on the bed. The thunder continued to rumble endlessly. After a long while, Su Fei Fei quietly scooted closer to Ye Tian Xie. “Tian Xie, can you talk with me for a while? I’m still a little scared.”
In truth, what she wanted to say was… Could you hold me while I sleep?
If she could close her eyes in his embrace, all her fears would surely vanish. Even with thunder roaring in her ears, she felt she could drift into a peaceful slumber.
But she didn’t dare voice it, afraid of hearing a rejection.
“Wuu… wuwu… Guo Guo is so pitiful. Guo Guo has no place to sleep anymore… No place… Wuwu…”
The completely bare Guo Guo floated about, distressed and sulky. Ye Tian Xie’s bed wasn’t particularly large, and Su Fei Fei had taken the very spot where Guo Guo usually slept. Guo Guo liked Su Fei Fei (because of her delicious cooking) and was too shy to compete with her for the sleeping space. Instead, she continued circling above Ye Tian Xie’s head, complaining about her plight.
Ye Tian Xie reached out and grabbed Guo Guo, pulling her down. He placed her on his pillow, letting her rest against his shoulder to sleep.
Thud!
Thud!
Thud!
A sound that should not have existed suddenly echoed at that moment. Though faint, it was audible despite the interference of rain and thunder, reaching the ears of the two restless, sleepless individuals with thoughts weighing on their hearts.
Ye Tian Xie frowned slightly.
