Chapter 37: Scheming
Jiang Wang acutely noticed something was off with the assistant. Did they know each other?
“You know him.”
His tone carried no hint of a question, only unwavering certainty.
The assistant’s face paled slightly. Under the watchful eyes of the so-called bodyguards, he remained silent, resolving to secretly tell his boss the truth when they were alone. He silently lamented that this job was truly inhuman, like starring in a spy thriller.
Receiving no answer, Jiang Wang remained calm. Ever since being found, his composure had been remarkably steady. Even when he saw the familiar duo behaving intimately, his emotions had only briefly surged. The possessive desire that rose in him to separate the young man from the other had startled Jiang Wang himself.
However, acting rashly without knowing the full picture would be imprudent. Jiang Wang suppressed his emotions, cast an icy glance at the taller young man, and followed his assistant into the hospital for a check-up.
The two groups parted ways.
Qi Yuan got into the car with He Zhou, leaving the hospital further behind.
As they drove, Qi Yuan grew suspicious, but he never realized He Zhou had deliberately engineered his encounter with Jiang Wang.
His lover had clearly returned alive, yet he hadn’t sought Qi Yuan out immediately. Even after their reunion, Jiang Wang wore a distant expression, as if drawing a clear line between them.
He Zhou’s goal was to make Qi Yuan give up on Jiang Wang.
Now that Jiang Wang had returned, He Zhou didn’t know when his memories might return. It was best to make Qi Yuan lose hope and give up on Jiang Wang while he was still amnesiac.
Otherwise, once Jiang Wang regained his memories, the opportunity He Zhou had so painstakingly seized would vanish like mist—a scenario he refused to accept.
Yet something felt off.
Why was Qi Yuan’s reaction to Jiang Wang’s resurrection so muted?
Could it be that there was no real affection between them?
Or was it a lingering effect of the food poisoning that caused his amnesia, making him barely remember Jiang Wang?
These were the only two explanations He Zhou could think of.
He cast a sidelong glance at Qi Yuan, who was staring expressionlessly out the car window.
Neither explanation was detrimental to He Zhou’s goals.
However, if the second scenario were true, He Zhou frowned slightly, growing concerned about Qi Yuan’s health.
I should take him back to the hospital for another checkup tomorrow, he thought. Ask the doctor if there have been any cases of food poisoning causing amnesia.
He Zhou indeed wanted Qi Yuan, but he wanted Qi Yuan’s body to be safe and sound.
The car moved slowly through the city, caught in the midday rush hour traffic. There was no rushing.
Considering Qi Yuan had just been discharged from the hospital, He Zhou instructed the driver to take them to his downtown penthouse.
This would make it more convenient for Qi Yuan’s checkup at the hospital tomorrow.
However, He Zhou remained uncertain about whether to allow Qi Yuan to see Jiang Wang again.
He had his subordinates continue monitoring Jiang Wang’s movements, deciding to address the matter in the morning.
He Zhou’s downtown penthouse was a sprawling single-story residence, exceptionally spacious.
The decor was minimalist and cold, the kind Qi Yuan disliked.
He preferred interiors that exuded a sense of warmth and lived-in comfort.
He Zhou had already arranged for the place to be thoroughly cleaned.
In truth, he had staff maintain all his properties, though not meticulously. Their primary task was to ensure cleanliness and ensure the places could be quickly tidied up whenever he decided to stay on a whim.
He Zhou had always been lenient with his subordinates, provided they didn’t commit any egregious breaches of principle.
He understood the difficulties of work, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that no one in this world had an easy time; everyone faced their own hardships. But outsiders typically only saw your polished facade.
Inside the house, Aunt Lin was already cooking. He Zhou told Qi Yuan to rest well, explaining that there was an urgent matter at the company requiring his immediate attention. He promised to return for dinner.
Qi Yuan nodded in agreement, urging He Zhou to focus on his work without worry.
Watching He Zhou disappear into the study, Qi Yuan sank into the plush sofa and pulled out his phone.
His SIM card had already been replaced.
He wondered if You Qinghe and the others had already settled things, given their lack of objection to him staying at He Zhou’s place.
But messages from them kept flooding his phone.
Qi Yuan selectively replied to a few.
He had almost no useful information about this Dreamscape in his head.
However, based on his previous Dreamscapes, the key to escape usually involved the last person he encountered.
Could it be Jiang Wang?
But didn’t they say their boyfriend was dead?
Yet Jiang Wang was alive and well, looking nothing like a ghost—more like someone who had just emerged from a primeval jungle.
He couldn’t quite make sense of it.
In his previous Dreamscapes, the key figures had always sought him out, sparing him the trouble of searching. But in this one, when he had to find them himself, it felt like searching for a needle in a haystack.
He’d already spent several days in this Dreamscape. He wondered if he’d oversleep after waking up.
Qi Yuan still had his mountain hike on his mind.
He lay flat on the sofa, crossed his hands over his stomach, and stared blankly at the ceiling.
Completely out of ideas, he surrendered to inertia, becoming a true couch potato.
After the hospital checkup, it was determined that Jiang Wang’s amnesia was caused by a blood clot in his brain. Once the clot dissolved, his memory would return.
Otherwise, he was in ridiculously good health. The doctor remarked that Jiang Wang was as strong as an ox.
Having confirmed he was fine and didn’t need hospitalization—nor did Jiang Wang want it—he left the hospital escorted by his assistant and bodyguards.
In the car, Lin Yuan, the assistant, couldn’t help but marvel at his boss. “Imagine surviving a plane crash in the jungle, losing your memory, and still managing to live off the land for so long, getting as strong as an ox! The only downside is how tan you got.”
A normal person with amnesia in the jungle would either starve to death or be reduced to skin and bones.
“Boss is a true man among men,” Lin Yuan thought, “a living miracle.”
Those old geezers must really not fear Boss regaining his memory and wiping them out, he fumed. They actually tried to break him and his boyfriend apart while he was amnesiac!
It was only because Boss had been less hot-tempered these past two years that they dared to overstep like this.
Threatening to fire me if I didn’t obey? Bah!
Even kicking a dog requires considering its owner! They’re not the ones who hired me, nor are they the ones paying my salary. It’s Boss, damn it!
Lin Yuan considered himself fiercely loyal to his boss. He would never stoop to the despicable act of separating Boss from his boyfriend.
Still, he admitted to himself, Boss’s boyfriend is really popular.
Lin Yuan felt that if the boss didn’t recover his memories soon, he’d lose his boyfriend for good.
This made him want to come clean with the boss immediately, hoping it might jolt his memory back.
But with bodyguards watching every move, he had to tread carefully.
Sigh, this is so difficult.
He stared at his boss with worry, sighing.
There was a way to break this deadlock, but Lin Yuan hesitated. He feared the boss’s reaction, knowing his boss wanted nothing to do with that world.
Lin Yuan wrestled with his dilemma.
But… wouldn’t this be better than the boss regaining his memory and finding his boyfriend stolen by someone else?
So, after dropping the boss off at home,
Lin Yuan left obediently, taking no reckless actions.
Once he confirmed none of those old bastards had sent anyone to tail him, he promptly called the contact labeled “Madam.”
Madam was his boss’s mother. Both were known for their fiery tempers, and with one living in China and the other abroad, they hadn’t spoken in years.
Madam still hadn’t heard about her son’s accident.
If she had known, those old vultures wouldn’t have dared lay a finger on him.
Moreover, the attack had been sudden. They, as subordinates, had been outmaneuvered. Otherwise, they would have protected the boss. Their negligence had led to an undeniable and bitter lesson.
