Chapter 61

With that, Ying Yuan turned to leave, no longer bothering to engage with these people.

Lin Feng never expected Ying Yuan to say such things, never imagined she’d adopt such a dismissive, fearless attitude.

Rage flushed Lin Feng’s face. She lunged forward, grabbing for Ying Yuan’s shoulder. “You really think I wouldn’t dare…?”

Ying Yuan dodged her hand. “I didn’t say you wouldn’t dare. I’m telling you to report me.”

She glanced up at the surveillance cameras mounted high in the parking lot. “The heavens have eyes. With cameras everywhere in the scenic area, the police will have no trouble investigating. You’ll get a fair and just resolution soon enough.”

Her words were delivered with mock solemnity, each syllable dripping with sarcasm.

  • Mocking Lin Feng for thinking a police report would be effective, only wasting time.
  • Threatening Lin Feng by reminding her that any violent actions would be captured on camera.

Lin Feng was momentarily speechless, her fury choking her. Ying Yuan, seizing the moment, continued walking forward.

Qi Hongyue caught up to her, falling into step beside her. “Told you, she’s a nutcase.”

“Mm,” Ying Yuan replied. “Feels like her brain structure is… incomplete.”

Qi Hongyue chuckled. “So, what now? Go back and tell Yi Shanshan to handle this herself?”

“If Shanshan doesn’t sleep well, she’ll be in a terrible mood,” Ying Yuan said.

“Hmm?” Qi Hongyue replied.

“I’m doing this for their own good too. If Shanshan is in a bad mood, she won’t be pleasant to be around.”

Qi Hongyue laughed again, looking at Ying Yuan. “In the end, nothing matters more than your princess getting her sleep, right?”

Though the term “your princess” made Ying Yuan feel a little embarrassed, she nodded. “Mm-hmm.”

“Oh my god,” Qi Hongyue sighed, her voice full of exasperation.

They walked a little further before Qi Hongyue glanced back. “Someone’s following us.”

“Mm-hmm,” Ying Yuan replied. “Senior, want to grab breakfast? I checked some guides earlier—there’s a place with amazing salty milk tea and flaky sesame pastries. They’re limited edition, so we have to get there early to get some.”

Qi Hongyue stretched, the annoyance from being bothered early that morning fading. “Sure, you’re treating, and I’m not reimbursing you, okay?”

“Mm-hmm,” Ying Yuan nodded, readily agreeing.

They turned down another street, one leading away from their hotel.

Their follower tailed them right to the restaurant entrance. As soon as they stepped inside, he pulled out his phone and made a call.

“Senior, let’s take our time,” Ying Yuan said.

“Alright,” Qi Hongyue replied, settling into her seat. “But how much time exactly? How long is your ‘princess’ going to sleep?”

Ying Yuan glanced at her wristwatch. “At least another two hours, I’d say.”

“Fine,” Qi Hongyue sighed heavily.

Some things I’ve said too often already. I’m not going to repeat them.

Life unfolds along its own winding path. Only by walking it can you truly live it.

Even with just the two of them, conversation flowed easily.

They broke the unspoken rule against discussing work during team outings, drifting back to project talk within a few sentences.

Not that we mind, they thought, two workaholics enjoying themselves.

Lingering over their morning tea and discussing project development, Ying Yuan and Qi Hongyue stayed in the restaurant for a long time.

The person who had been watching them outside had long since disappeared. The sunlight grew stronger, dispersing the morning mist and revealing a bright, clear world.

Qi Hongyue’s phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, she clicked her tongue in annoyance.

Ying Yuan reacted quickly. “What’s wrong?”

“Your ‘princess’,” Qi Hongyue said.

Ying Yuan fell silent.

Qi Hongyue handed her the phone. “You take it. It’s not even time for the princess to wake up yet. I don’t want to deal with her morning grumpiness.”

Ying Yuan’s name flashed on the screen.

Before answering, she explained to Yi Shanshan, “Shanshan doesn’t get angry for no reason.”

The moment the call connected, Yi Shanshan’s voice erupted like machine-gun fire:

“Qi Hongyue! Where have you taken my Ying Yuan?! I woke up and she was gone! I checked her call history and saw you called her at six in the morning! Who in their right mind wakes up that early to work for someone else?! You’ve gone too far! Couldn’t this wait until she’d gotten enough sleep?! Can’t you see how exhausted and thin our Ying Yuan has become?! Even a donkey wouldn’t work her so hard!”

Ying Yuan: “……”

Hearing the commotion, Qi Hongyue covered her mouth, wrinkles crinkling around her eyes from suppressed laughter.

Ying Yuan quickly interjected, “Shanshan, Shanshan, it’s me.”

“What if it’s you?! I’m scolding you! Don’t think calling me by my nickname will make me…” Her voice trailed off, followed by a stunned silence as Yi Shanshan’s brain finally caught up. “Ying Yuan?”

“Yes, it’s me.” Ying Yuan hurriedly repeated her name, “Ying Yuan.”

Yi Shanshan: “So, you’re really with Qi Hongyue?”

Ying Yuan: “Mm, I had something I needed to—”

Yi Shanshan cut her off, her words tumbling out rapidly: “You two have been together since six this morning?”

Ah, something feels off, but that’s exactly what happened.

Ying Yuan could only answer: “Mm, we were—”

“Waaah…” Yi Shanshan suddenly started to sob. “So I was right to scold you earlier! What urgent business could possibly require you to leave so early? What’s more important than a good night’s sleep? We finally got a chance to share a room, and you just abandoned me! I’m in a completely unfamiliar place, and when I woke up, the room was completely empty, not a soul in sight! Waaah…”

It sounded like she was crying.

The kind of fake wail a child puts on.

Though Ying Yuan’s ears were ringing with the noise, she felt no annoyance, only a pang of guilt for not considering how Yi Shanshan would feel waking up alone.

Softly, she tried to soothe her: “I’m sorry, Shanshan. I’ll be back right away. It’s just that over here—”

“What’s there to be just about?” Yi Shanshan retorted, her voice laced with dissatisfaction. “What more is there to be just about? You missed my first waking moment. Last night you swore you liked me more, and then you ran off with Qi Hongyue at dawn…”

Ying Yuan was genuinely flustered and helpless, unable to get a word in edgewise.

Across the table, Qi Hongyue watched and listened, utterly exasperated by this display of inefficiency.

She snatched back her phone and, ignoring the ranting on the other end, snapped, “Your friend Lin Feng showed up this morning with three luxury cars and a whole gang of people, demanding I hand over Ying Yuan—and they nearly attacked her!”

“What?!” The saccharine tone on the other end vanished, replaced by a thunderous roar.

Yi Shanshan’s voice was now ice-cold, sharp as shards of glass. “Are you two okay? Where are you now?”

“Just a little shaken up, but we’re fine,” Qi Hongyue replied. “We’re having dim sum right now, guarding your sleep.”

“Screw sleeping! I’m coming over immediately!” Yi Shanshan declared.

“Meet us at the south parking lot. We’ll head over there too,” Qi Hongyue said.

“Okay,” Yi Shanshan agreed.

The call ended.

Qi Hongyue, staring at Ying Yuan across from her, said, “Your princess is about to come charging in.”

Ying Yuan replied, “Send her a message telling her to dress warmly. It’s cold this morning.”

Qi Hongyue rolled her eyes and tossed her phone across the table.

Ying Yuan got up, texted, and then called the owner to have the previously ordered meals packed to go.

Qi Hongyue watched her. As they left together, Ying Yuan remarked, “I’m really seeing a lot of my own flaws in you.”

“Huh? What’s that?” Ying Yuan looked up, puzzled.

“Just let me fix them myself. You carry on,” Qi Hongyue said, striding ahead.

When Ying Yuan and Qi Hongyue arrived at the parking lot, Yi Shanshan had already arrived.

She was standing before Lin Feng, talking with her arms crossed and her brow furrowed.

In front of Yi Shanshan, Lin Feng showed none of the arrogance and disdain she usually displayed toward others. The group of people she had brought with her stood idly a few meters away.

Qi Hongyue started to move forward, but Ying Yuan stopped her.

“Let’s wait a bit. Let them finish talking.”

Qi Hongyue asked, “Why? Shouldn’t you be rushing over to protect your… Yi Shanshan?”

“This is Shanshan’s own matter,” Ying Yuan said. “She can handle it. We’ll step in if needed.”

Qi Hongyue: “……”

And so they stood on the opposite shore, watching the drama unfold like bystanders observing a distant fire.

They couldn’t hear the words being exchanged, but they could clearly see their expressions and gestures.

Lin Feng clearly held no advantage over Yi Shanshan.

Despite her height, she always hunched her shoulders. From her expression, it was clear that Yi Shanshan’s tone was harsh, yet Lin Feng showed no sign of anger.

Standing a head shorter, Lin Feng was suppressing her emotions.

Qi Hongyue: “I thought she was so tough. Turns out she’s just under My Lady’s thumb too.”

Ying Yuan: “They still care about each other. Lin Feng clearly worries about Shanshan.”

Qi Hongyue: “That kind of concern feels like a duty, not genuine affection. It’s nothing like what you have.”

Ying Yuan: “……”

Qi Hongyue: “The breakfast you brought will get cold. Let’s move closer.”

That made sense.

Ying Yuan moved forward, thinking that her presence might distract Yi Shanshan and help her calm down.

Lin Feng glanced at Ying Yuan as she approached, a flicker of involuntary disdain crossing her face.

“I’m not saying you can’t go out and have fun,” Lin Feng said to Yi Shanshan, “but the group you’re hanging out with now is way below your standard. What good does hanging around with them do you? They can’t offer you any resources—in fact, they’re just trying to leech off you…”

Yi Shanshan scoffed. “You’re hilarious, Lin Feng. Aren’t you just trying to leech off me too?”

Lin Feng: “……”

Yi Shanshan: “My things are mine to give to whoever I want. I’ll give them to whoever makes me happy. And right now, you’re making me extremely unhappy.”

Lin Feng: “……Do you think I enjoy doing this?”

“Then stop! Get out of here right now!” Yi Shanshan snapped, her brow furrowed. “Bringing a bunch of thugs here—who do you think you’re scaring?”

Lin Feng closed her eyes briefly, clenching her jaw to swallow her frustration.

“I’m not leaving unless you come back with me. Your phone’s broken, and you’re unreachable. I need to ensure your safety.”

“Then stay here if you want. This lady won’t be keeping you company.”

Yi Shanshan didn’t want to waste any more time with this unreasonable person. Out of the corner of her eye, she had already spotted Qi Hongyue and Ying Yuan.

Ying Yuan looked so fresh and composed in the morning light, waiting quietly with what Yi Shanshan was certain was her breakfast. The longer she spoke to Lin Feng, the more she longed to be back by Ying Yuan’s side.

She was already turning to leave when Lin Feng lowered her gaze, pulled out her phone, and made a call.

“You should talk to Uncle Yi,” Lin Feng said. “He couldn’t reach you last night, so he asked me to come find you. You won’t listen to me, but you’ll have to listen to him.”

A sudden darkness enveloped Yi Shanshan, like an endless black hole devouring all light and warmth.

Her heart pounded fiercely, each beat a heavy blow against her chest. Her head swam, and a savage dragon roared within her, craving to tear everything apart. Even the air seemed to thin with each ragged breath.

This sensation was far from unfamiliar; it was, in fact, overwhelmingly familiar.

It was like a shadow twin suddenly materializing, its icy grip tightening around her throat.

The phone rang incessantly, each ring a death knell.

Yi Shanshan stepped forward, snatched Lin Feng’s phone, and with all her might, hurled it to the ground.

The phone shattered into pieces, its incessant ringing silenced.

Everyone stared at Yi Shanshan in shock. Without a word, she suddenly drew a dagger from her bosom, the sheath clattering to the ground as its cold steel flashed.

Lin Feng stumbled backward, raising her hand to ward off the blow, while Ying Yuan lunged toward Yi Shanshan.

But Yi Shanshan’s target wasn’t the women—it was the cars.

She strode to the luxury vehicle behind Lin Feng, her expression grim and silent. Gripping the dagger’s hilt with both hands, she plunged the blade into the tire.

A swift, vertical slash, a yank of the blade, and without pausing, she moved to the next car, repeating the act.

Author’s Note:

Don’t worry, our precious Shanshan is fine—just a little unwell… In short, don’t worry; I won’t write any background elements that readers might find unacceptable.
