Chapter 16

Ying Yuan finally understood the true meaning behind Yi Shanshan’s afternoon messages:

I’ll come looking for you around 8 or 9 tonight~

I’ll definitely find you~

Don’t worry, I’ll remember all our promises~~

And so, Yi Shanshan arrived, wearing the Student Union armband.

Yi Shanshan had trapped Ying Yuan in the dormitory using the school’s regulations—a clever feint to catch her off guard.

Now, Yi Shanshan was going to play the role of a stranger in public, just as they had agreed.

Her professional demeanor was almost ruthless. She spoke no unnecessary words, entering the dormitory and immediately beginning to inspect every corner.

Two members of the College Student Union trailed behind her, their nervousness mirroring that of the entire dorm. All eyes were fixed on Yi Shanshan, their gazes darting with her movements, fearing she would find even the slightest flaw.

Yi Shanshan circled the room before stopping at a desk and pointing. “Whose desk is this?”

Ying Yuan was about to answer when Xiaohan cut in. “It doesn’t matter whose it is, does it? Is there a problem?”

Yi Shanshan’s gaze lingered on Xiaohan’s face, studying her for a moment. She shrugged. “No problem at all. Just wanted to compliment it. This desk is exceptionally neat, and the bed is meticulously made.”

“Oh,” Xiaohan said awkwardly, nudging Ying Yuan’s arm. “That’s this classmate’s desk and bed. Her name is Ying Yuan.”

Yi Shanshan’s eyes curved into crescents as she gazed at Ying Yuan. “Ying Yuan, you’re truly amazing~”

Her tone softened, and her demeanor became charming. Yet, in this context, her sudden sweetness felt eerily artificial, as if she were saying the opposite of what she meant.

Mao Mao and Xiaohan exchanged puzzled glances. Ying Yuan felt a mix of embarrassment and resignation; she knew Yi Shanshan was just teasing her.

Teasing her in public—this was likely both Yi Shanshan’s punishment and her amusement.

Ying Yuan lowered her gaze and murmured, “Thank you.”

The most generic response imaginable.

Yi Shanshan wasn’t about to be dismissed with just two words. Leaning against Ying Yuan’s desk, she watched her with keen interest. “Besides, this classmate’s bed is clearly always meticulously kept, not just for inspection. I think we should photograph it and showcase it as a model on the school forum.”

Ying Yuan: “……”

Mao Mao and Xiaohan: “????”

Xiaohan’s mind was only stocked with strategies for dealing with the Student Union’s fault-finding, not their praise. She glanced left at Ying Yuan, then right at Yi Shanshan, sensing something was off but unable to pinpoint it.

A hint of resignation crept into Ying Yuan’s voice. “Thank you for the compliment, but I’ll pass. This is my personal matter, and I don’t consent to being showcased as an example.”

Her refusal was so concise and direct, completely devoid of fear or resentment towards authority, that Mao Mao and Xiaohan wanted to give her a thumbs-up on the spot.

“Alright then,” Yi Shanshan said, turning away. “Too bad.”

She reached out and opened Ying Yuan’s closet door. “Then I’ll just take another good look.”

Ying Yuan finally tensed up. Hidden at the bottom of the closet was the contraband electric hot pot their dorm had bought. If discovered, they’d face immediate demerits and a warning.

She stared at Yi Shanshan’s back, Yi Shanshan, like a precision radar, quickly bent down to peer into the closet’s lower depths.

Xiaohan began stammering, “Um, maybe that’s enough checking… We need to, uh, get some sleep too.”

Yi Shanshan raised an eyebrow and reached into the closet.

Silence hung heavy in the air. This was the real tension—the heart-pounding fear of getting caught red-handed. Ying Yuan’s heart hammered against her ribs as she frantically searched for something to say to make Yi Shanshan back off.

Yi Shanshan’s arm froze mid-reach, and she turned to look at the three of them.

Mao Mao’s face had flushed crimson. Xiaohan’s lips twitched nervously. Ying Yuan stared at Yi Shanshan and, feeling terribly awkward, gave her a clumsy wink.

That wink was utterly adorable.

Like a bee sting on her eyelid—a fleeting, twitching grimace.

Yi Shanshan had never seen Ying Yuan make that expression before, and she nearly burst out laughing on the spot.

Lowering her head to stifle her smile, Yi Shanshan withdrew her hand and approached the trio with a cold expression.

She scrutinized them from left to right, then right to left, her gaze so intense it seemed to freeze the atmosphere in the room.

“I need to keep one of you here to talk,” Yi Shanshan said. “To discuss… some… things about your dorm.”

Mao Mao, terrified, gripped Xiaohan’s hand tightly. Xiaohan reached for Ying Yuan’s hand, only to find it buried in her pocket, out of reach.

Yi Shanshan tilted her chin toward Ying Yuan. “You. You stay. The other two students, please step outside.”

Xiaohan immediately protested, “I—”

Ying Yuan gave them a gentle shove. “Go on, it’ll be fine.”

Yi Shanshan smiled. “Exactly. What could possibly go wrong? It’s just a little chat.”

The two College Student Union members exchanged uneasy glances but dared not voice any objections.

The four of them dawdled out of the dorm room, and Yi Shanshan followed, closing the door behind them and casually flipping the deadbolt.

With that door, two worlds were now separated.

Outside the door, Mao Mao and Xiaohan were on pins and needles, convinced that Yi Shanshan had singled out the most naive and honest among them for a private interrogation, all to uncover contraband in their dorm room and dock their points.

The College Student Union, seething with suppressed anger, believed Yi Shanshan’s clandestine inquiries among well-behaved students were a ploy to expose their management flaws and fuel a power struggle.

Inside the room, Ying Yuan knew exactly what Yi Shanshan was up to.

The moment the door closed, she could almost see Yi Shanshan’s triumphant grin in her receding figure.

When the door was bolted shut, that grin widened, radiating the smug satisfaction of a mischievous fox who’d gotten away with something.

Ying Yuan stood her ground, waiting.

Yi Shanshan turned gracefully, her face wearing precisely the expression Ying Yuan had imagined.

Her eyebrows arched with amusement, her eyes curved into crescents, and the corners of her lips nearly stretched to her ears.

With her hands clasped behind her back, Yi Shanshan strolled toward Ying Yuan, each step imbued with the smug authority of the Student Union.

“Well, Ying Yuan,” she said, stopping before her and tilting her head to peer down at her. “Scared? Still not ready to confess?”

“Afraid,” Ying Yuan answered sincerely.

Yi Shanshan’s delight intensified, her teeth flashing in a wide grin. She suddenly reached out and pinched Ying Yuan’s cheek, tugging it playfully but forcefully. “Afraid of what?”

Ying Yuan’s heart clenched at the touch of Yi Shanshan’s cool fingertips. Yi Shanshan’s willful, capricious nature reminded her of a wild animal running free, and Ying Yuan found it not annoying, but rather… endearing.

“Afraid you’ll find something contraband,” Ying Yuan answered, her voice still utterly sincere.

“Afraid you’ll suddenly shout and attract everyone’s attention.”

“Afraid your wild ideas will catch me off guard.”

Ying Yuan paused, a hint of helplessness in her tone. “Afraid you’ll punish me one moment and reward me the next.”

Yi Shanshan doubled over with laughter, leaning so close that her shoulder brushed against Ying Yuan’s, her hair sliding down Ying Yuan’s neck.

“If you’re so afraid, shouldn’t you do something about it?” Yi Shanshan didn’t rush to embrace Ying Yuan. Instead, her fingers landed on Ying Yuan’s stomach, poking her repeatedly through the thin fabric.

“Do something to bribe me.”
