Chapter 21 Qin Shaozong: She’s Truly Excellent!

Breeze Tower.

Yun Rong had just woken from a nap, feeling much more refreshed. She glanced at the sky, satisfied with the time. It was already the end of the Shen hour, approaching dusk. Normally, Dai Li would have come looking for her by now to return to the mansion together.

Really, these past few days they’d been wandering around outside aimlessly, leaving her with no appetite for dinner every evening. No matter what that troublemaker said tomorrow, she definitely wouldn’t leave the mansion with her.

No, not just tomorrow – she wouldn’t go out for the next several days either…

Madam! Madam!!

Just as Yun Rong was lost in her random thoughts, she was startled back to reality by a panicked shout. Turning, she saw it was Dingxiang and, projecting her annoyance with Dai Li onto the maid, scolded her.

Why are you so frantic? You’ll scare away all our good fortune…

Madam, Madam Dai has disappeared!

Their voices overlapped.

The surroundings instantly fell silent.

Yun Rong’s eyes widened, wondering if she was still dreaming and hadn’t woken up yet. Otherwise, how could she be hearing such nonsense?

While Yun Rong remained stunned, the square-faced military general whom Dai Li had ordered to stay behind paled dramatically beside her.

He immediately asked urgently, How did Madam Dai disappear? Where did she disappear? When did this happen? Tell us quickly!

Dingxiang had run all the way to Breeze Tower, completely out of breath. Now being questioned, she spoke in broken sentences, making Yun Rong so anxious she nearly lost her breath too.

After finally understanding what had happened, Yun Rong drew a sharp breath. That troublemaker is willful beyond compare, always doing as she pleases without any regard for others’ feelings. Could it be that she had another quarrel with Marquis Qin last night, leading to this unnecessary trouble today?

After all, this favored concubine had a history of such behavior. Back then, she had silently disappeared from her quarters, throwing the entire mansion into chaos.

Yun Rong quickly ordered, Send people to search immediately – the jewelry stores, fabric shops, and silk merchants in the North Market; Bright Moon Residence and Secluded Orchid Courtyard in the East Market; check the West Market too. Oh, and we should return to the mansion to look – perhaps she’s already gone back ahead of us.

Everyone quickly split up to search, swarming out of Breeze Tower.

After thinking it over, Yun Rong felt Dai Li might come to Breeze Tower later, so she left Dingxiang behind while she returned to the mansion with the square-faced military general and another Jiang Mansion guard.

Jiang Mansion.

Yun Rong entered through the side gate and asked the two gate guards if Dai Li had returned. Receiving negative answers, her heart sank, but she still entered holding onto hope.

After all, Jiang Mansion had more than one gate – what if that troublemaker had returned through another entrance?

She headed toward the guest quarters in the mansion and happened to encounter Qin Shaozong emerging from the main residence.

The orange sunset enveloped the large-framed man, casting a faint, warm honey-gold hue over his black robes. But this warm coloring didn’t make him any gentler – this military general from a family that had guarded the borders for generations remained imposing, carrying an undeniable sense of distance.

This was Yun Rong’s first time meeting Qin Shaozong without her husband present, but she couldn’t afford to be fearful now. She had to get straight to the point. Marquis Qin, has Xiao Li returned to look for you?

Qin Shaozong: She has not. Why do you ask, Madam?

Yun Rong remained silent for several moments, hesitating between telling the truth outright and temporarily concealing the matter while waiting for Dai Li to appear. In the end, she chose the former while attempting to shift responsibility elsewhere.

Yun Rong: While sending the maid away to buy snacks, Xiao Li silently left Prosperity Silk Shop without a word, and no one knows where she went. Today when she left the residence, she seemed displeased, and even complained about you once or twice along the way. Did you have a disagreement with her last night?

The casual expression on Qin Shaozong’s face gradually receded like the tide. There was no disagreement between us. She merely sent a maid to buy snacks. What about the others? Don’t tell me she only had one maid accompanying her from start to finish?

Hearing the commotion, Yan San and Mo Yanyun from the side room came out together. Seeing that it was the Lord’s wife who had arrived, they curiously inquired about the matter.

Yun Rong felt extremely guilty, stammering as she explained that she had grown tired midway and parted ways with Dai Li. She went to rest at the Courier Station while Dai Li continued shopping. She emphasized that when Dai Li left, she had three guards and two maids with her.

The underlying message was clear: It wasn’t that I didn’t arrange servants for her; sending everyone away was her own decision.

Under the authoritative or curious gazes, Yun Rong didn’t dare omit anything. She swallowed hard and continued recounting what she learned from Dingxiang, her voice growing progressively softer.

When they heard that Dai Li had ordered seafood and sea cucumber from a fishmonger at the West Market two days prior, scheduled for pickup today, which was why three guards were sent to the West Market, Mo Yanyun couldn’t help but freeze.

And that wasn’t the end. Yun Rong also said Dai Li used insufficient funds as an excuse to send one maid back to the residence to fetch money. Then shortly after at the silk shop, she sent the last maid away to buy hu pancakes.

Even the usually reserved Yan San couldn’t help showing astonishment in his eyes.

What was Madam Dai doing?

Could it be that the Lord discussed a new plan with her last night? But this doesn’t seem to match…

Qin Shaozong stood still for a few moments before speaking expressionlessly, I am aware of the matter now. Thank you for informing me, Madam. You may return first. I will handle the follow-up matters.

Yun Rong was trembling with fear. Hearing that Qin Shaozong said she could leave, she departed without delay.

After she left, Mo Yanyun frowned and asked in a low voice: Lord, could all this be the work of Li Zan’s faction? They secretly infiltrated Nankang County, learned that Madam Dai has been receiving great favor recently, and thus secretly planned this.

But Yan San beside him said: If what you say is true, there must be one prerequisite – that Madam Dai is Li Zan’s person.

That’s true. Besides, the Lord has allowed her to serve by his side. Why would she risk so much for so little? Mo Yanyun scratched his head, truly perplexed.

Qin Shaozong took a deep breath and closed his eyes, scenes from his recent interactions with Dai Li flashing through his mind like a rewinding tape.

Since Your Excellency can disregard past grievances and still hold me in high regard, I’m overjoyed. How could I possibly push you away…

One spring night is worth a thousand pieces of gold. Why don’t we quickly retire for the night?

Let us enjoy together, resolving our disagreements in bed. Thus everything will fall into place naturally, and we shall be reconciled.

I will await Your Lordship’s esteemed presence in my chamber tomorrow evening.

That lingering feminine voice still echoed in his ears, sweet like flower nectar, her meticulous tenderness weaving a net that made one constantly sink deeper.

Qin Shaozong suddenly opened his eyes and looked at Mo Yanyun beside him, his gaze profound. For women in good health, does the monthly blood always last exactly seven days?

Mo Yanyun, who was experienced in romantic affairs and always considerate, actually knew the answer. He replied instinctively: Who said that? Of course not.

The surroundings seemed to suddenly grow much colder, a biting chill piercing to the bone. Mo Yanyun unconsciously lowered his voice, This matter has its complexities. My previous acquaintance in Yunzhong Commandery recovered fully in just three days. Why do you ask?

Qin Shaozong’s gaze darkened to the extreme. He raised the corner of his mouth, laughing in extreme anger, She’s truly remarkable!

Four years after losing her husband, her daughter also died in a car accident. Pei Ying endured her grief to complete her daughter’s funeral, only to open her eyes and inexplicably find herself in an unfamiliar dynasty.

Before she could recover from the shock, she suddenly saw a little girl who looked exactly like her daughter calling her mother.

The good news: her daughter seemed to have returned, and she was now the wife of a county magistrate, who was reportedly her childhood sweetheart and deeply cherished her.

The bad news: she was now in a small county on the border of Jizhou, where chaos had erupted due to military conflicts. The neighboring Bingzhou army, disguised as bandits, had invaded, overrun the county, and killed the magistrate and other officials.

With her family destroyed and her husband lost again, Pei Ying hid herself and her daughter, planning to leave for Chang’an after the conflict subsided, but was inadvertently ensnared by a petty official seeking to offer beauties to his superiors.

Later, everyone under heaven knew that Huo Tingshan of Youzhou preferred beautiful mature women over young maidens.
