Chapter 8: Remnants

***

Several great mages releasing magic together, the instantaneous intensity was too high. There was no way Vina could capture them alive while enduring that level of firepower.

It would be easier to kill a few of them first.

Aira opened her mouth, wanting to speak but hesitating, stopping then wanting to speak again.

She wanted to say that if it was just to obtain information, she could just rush up and stab them to death, then extract their souls for interrogation back at the royal capital, convenient and quick.

But firstly, souls could only be preserved for 3 days, and secondly, great mages were quite valuable. If possible, the Magic Court still hoped to capture them alive whenever feasible.

Vina was one of the Magic Court’s own people, so making such a decision was fine, they would believe she truly had no choice. But if she, an outsider, went up and killed everyone, going back would be awkward no matter what she said.

“Little Ai, don’t space out, help me block for a bit.” The little witch called to her. “I need to charge up a big one.”

“Okay.”

Aira held nothing back, extending her hand to summon the Sword of the Dead and slashing an incoming wave of fire in half.

Necromancy wasn’t an element, but after being enhanced by the Evil God, the properties this sword carried were half a tier higher than ordinary elements, making it suitable for dealing with magical attacks.

Vina hid behind her, chanting under her breath:

“Fear it, cold is the end of all things.”

Charging for a full minute, Aira felt the surrounding air suddenly compress and rush toward the little witch’s hand, condensing into an ice crystal spear.

It looked unremarkable, yet was cold enough to make one involuntarily shiver. The extreme thermal expansion and contraction even caused a gust of wind to blow through this small area.

“Pierce him!”

The ice spear shot out with the command. Aira could only see a flash of white light in the dark night before it penetrated its target and instantly vaporized in the air.

The continuous burst of flame attacks stopped. Several out-of-control mages turned to look at the one who had been attacked — a large hole had been blown through his chest, blood gushing from the wound.

But they showed no sadness, nor fear. They just watched quietly for a while, as if evaluating something.

Aira was also watching, but suddenly a small hand grabbed her arm and yanked her backward.

“Something’s wrong, get over here!”

Why was something wrong? Because when the ice spear penetrated a human body, it should have completely frozen the area around the wound, with the cold rapidly spreading throughout the entire body in a short time. There should be no way for blood to flow out.

Unless the human body was continuously heating up in an even shorter time.

So the question was, why would his body keep heating up?

BOOM—!!

A great mage’s self-destruction, all the magic power in his body transformed into flames, surging wildly in all directions.

Aira and Vina hid behind an ice shield. After multiple reinforcements, the ice shield ultimately held, though they could feel it trembling precariously under the impact.

The guards had already run far away. Aside from the few unlucky ones who were burned to death at the very beginning, everyone else was still fine.

But there were some residents working behind this street. The death flame shockwave’s range exceeded expectations. The scorching breath broke through the walls and struck them, with several people even being sent flying by the heat wave.

Fortunately, they were far enough away. That area only received the aftershocks of the magic. They were injured, but their lives weren’t in danger.

“This is my first time seeing a mage still able to self-destruct after receiving a fatal wound.” Vina said through gritted teeth.

Aira nodded, indicating she was equally shocked.

If it were a berserker or similar close-combat class following the physical route, having an adrenaline rush after being severely injured to make your energy exceed your imagination, that would be completely possible.

But mages didn’t rely on physical stats. Compared to adrenaline, they usually depended more on serotonin, maintaining calm and composure to better cast magic.

These guys were just too abnormal!

“Quick battle, quick resolution.”

Vina used the same trick again, condensing a second extreme ice spear under Aira’s cover, once more piercing through a mage’s chest, then preemptively hiding behind the ice shield to resist the self-destruction.

BOOM!

Aira placed her hand on the ice shield, feeling the impact of the second explosion and finding that the power was somewhat weaker this time.

The third time, still the same tactic, bursting the third “balloon.” This time the self-destruction power was even weaker, looking as if it was just symbolically exploding.

By now, only 2 out-of-control mages remained.

Vina no longer used ice spears, instead summoning an area-of-effect blizzard to continuously suppress them. At this point, she felt almost no resistance. The 2 were quickly frozen solid.

Was it because their numbers decreased so their magic power also decreased, or was it some other reason? She didn’t know for now and had no time to worry about it.

“Done.” Vina clapped her little hands. “Clean up the aftermath and we can take them back.”

She continued summoning the blizzard, extinguishing the flames on the surrounding houses while also eliminating the residual fire element traces nearby.

In this battle of ice and fire in the dark night, there were a total of 5 out-of-control mages, 3 dead, 2 captured after being frozen. Of the guard soldiers, 5 unlucky ones were all burned to death, while the others were safe and sound.

As for the town residents affected by the first self-destruction, 4 had minor burns, 6 had localized burns, and all their wounds had already been bandaged. They seemed to be fine.

Count Herri arrived at the scene. He himself was also a mage of considerable skill, so he wasn’t worried about his own safety. When he heard that 10 residents had been burned by fire magic, his face was full of worry, but upon looking closely and seeing that everyone seemed fine, his furrowed brows relaxed again.

“How about this, you rest for half a day and get back to work at noon tomorrow. Let me see… many jobs don’t require all your hands and feet. With one hand and one foot, or even without feet, you can still work. I’ll have the supervisor pay attention and arrange suitable work for each of you until you’ve healed.”

How considerate!

The 10 residents showed no reaction, just nodding silently, as if they had grown accustomed to all this.

Vina tied up the 2 frozen mages with rope and turned to ask Aira: “When we fly in the sky, we’ll have the Dragon Eagles grab the rope with their claws to bring them back. That should work, right?”

“It can work, it’s just might be a bit cold.”

“That’s fine. They have plenty of fire element residue on them. We’ll need to freeze them for a while longer after we get back. Being blown by wind in the sky is nothing.”

Just in this short time, the ice layers on their bodies were rapidly melting, with ice water flowing down to the ground. The little witch had no choice but to keep adding ice while talking.

Seeing this, Aira nodded: “Alright, let’s go then.”

The condition of these mages was extremely abnormal, already exceeding her understanding. Better to hurry back and hand them over to professionals for analysis.

Soon, 2 Dragon Eagles took off into the air, carrying their spoils of war back toward the royal capital.

“Safe travels, ladies! Come visit often~”

Count Herri shouted up at them, then turned around to look at the surrounding streets that had been burned pitch black.

“Ah, look at that, more work to do tomorrow. That’s why, how can anyone think they can rest? Work, as long as you can do it, there’s no end to it.”

Then he yawned and went back to the castle to sleep.

The guard soldiers did a headcount, then each went back to their own rooms to rest. It was too dark, whatever needed doing could wait until tomorrow.

Only those 10 burned residents pretended to go home. A few minutes later, they came out from their respective houses and gathered here again.

Actually, there was no work scheduled for tonight, especially not here. They had been called out to deliberately wait here, called out by a relative of a maid who cleaned in the castle.

That person said that tonight, something that could fulfill everyone’s wishes might arrive.

“Did you hear it?” one person stepped forward and said. “Their voices.”

The others all nodded.

The 10 people simultaneously grabbed the cloth strips bandaging their wounds and forcefully tore them off, revealing lava-like wounds beneath.

During the first self-destruction, certain “things” had escaped from the great mage’s body, coming onto them and being hidden by them.

This was a power, a power to fulfill wishes. Power had a price, but for them, no price was too great to accept.

Everyone turned their heads in unison. In the darkness, 10 pairs of eyes glowed with a flame-like red light, looking toward the direction of the castle.
