Chapter 36: I Suggest We…
***
Everything was as Aira had predicted. The noble army from the north was indeed in a great hurry, running forward at a rapid pace. It wouldn’t be long before the vanguard separated from the main force, so they had to stop and reorganize from time to time.
The first wave of intelligence from the watchtower was discovered in the morning, but the army only finally approached in the afternoon.
Aira had led her troops up the mountain early in the morning and waited until now.
“Why are they both fast and slow?” Doro scratched his head. “So strange.”
The faster they ran, the more chaotic their formation became. The more chaotic the formation, the higher the frequency of reorganization. The more they reorganized, the slower they moved.
“That’s how it is, but we’re about done. Let’s head down.”
At Aira’s command, the 300 demon troops stationed on Huai Mountain, plus the 700 temporarily deployed today, a total of 1,000 people walked down the mountain. Their marching speed wasn’t fast, but as soon as they reached the foot of the mountain, they immediately deployed their formation and prepared for battle.
She had carefully calculated this number to ensure that during the “duel of champions,” they wouldn’t be surrounded by small fries, just right. Any more would be of little use.
As for how to force the other side to come out for a duel—
“Vina, I’m counting on you.”
But the little witch didn’t move.
“Vina?”
“You need to put on that voice,” she said. “It doesn’t feel right if you don’t.”
“Actually, my normal voice is— Please help us, Miss Vina~”
“Okay!”
The little witch completely ignored the first half of her sentence. Everyone in the Hero Party knew whether she was putting on that voice or not. As long as it felt satisfying, that’s all that mattered.
Raising her magic staff and aiming in the direction of the enemy army, she began to slowly gather power.
On the side of the northern noble army, the Blade Demon following in the vanguard frowned, sensing the agitated elements in the air.
This sign… Not good. How could she have such a powerful mage?
Because the first phase had gone too smoothly, Vina had only acted once on the Wolf-Head tribe’s snowfield. There had been witnesses, but the news clearly hadn’t spread.
“Speed up! Faster!”
But his words had no effect because the lord commanding the army wasn’t on this side. After a while, a rumbling sound echoed from the sky, and burning meteors appeared out of nowhere, smashing toward the army.
Bang—! Bang—! Bang—!
The scorching meteors fell into the vanguard formation. In an instant, nearly a hundred lives evaporated. Screams replaced the not-quite-orderly marching sounds. The front half of the army instinctively came to an abrupt halt, and the rear army, unable to react in time, crashed into them.
“Don’t push! Stop pushing! Control your men!”
“Your men stopped first!”
“Of course! There are meteors ahead. Should I let them keep throwing their lives away!”
Several lords from the south started arguing.
Only then did the Blade Demon understand why his earlier command had no effect. The lords were all hiding in the rear half of the central army, no wonder they couldn’t hear him.
A temporarily assembled army with poor coordination between all parties and insufficient quality, if he didn’t do something, they probably wouldn’t reach their destination.
He looked behind him and said to the four fierce-looking demons: “Go. It’s your turn.”
As the people sent by Dark Star City, show your strength.
Four demons with peculiar appearances but strong presence shot out from the chaotic military formation like arrows released from a bow.
One had antlers growing from his head, one had no upper jaw, one had arms so long they dragged on the ground, and one had a beak like a bird.
As they charged out, Aira spotted them immediately.
“One, two, three, four. Exactly four people.”
Not one more, not one less. She knew what to expect.
“Are you all here?”
Without needing to call names, the four demon generals immediately stepped forward: “Here!”
“Engage them, but pay attention to one thing.” Aira pointed at the four units charging over. “You stand your ground first and let them come to you, but after one round, immediately switch positions. Rockbreaker switches with Boner, Lone Eye switches with Doro.”
“Understood!”
Soon, the elite units from both sides clashed in the blank area at the front line below the mountain.
The generals set up their formation first, while the other side actively split up to engage. The deer demon attacked Boner, the jaw demon struck at Rockbreaker, the long-armed demon charged at Doro, and the remaining bird demon pecked with its sharp beak toward Lone Eye’s only eye.
Clang!
The bone protruding from Boner’s shoulder was broken by the antlers, making him grimace in pain.
Right from the start, they clearly felt that these four opponents were quite skilled, far beyond their previous adversaries, and their fighting styles countered them well.
But it was time to switch positions!
Vina waved her staff, stirring up a strong wind in the center of the field, temporarily forcing the four demons to retreat from their entanglement. When the wind subsided, the people in front of them had already switched.
The towering Lone Eye looked down at the jaw demon from above, then slammed his bald head down hard, making the jaw demon see stars.
Doro grabbed the bird demon’s sharp beak tightly with two hands, while his other two hands pummeled its head.
Boner grew bone spikes all over his body, like a hedgehog drilling into the long-armed demon’s embrace. The two long hands instinctively pressed down, only to end up covered in their own blood.
As for the deer demon, it looked up to see a sharp rhinoceros horn.
“I’ll gore you to death!”
The rhinoceros horn pierced through the middle of the antlers.
Standing on the small hill behind them observing the battlefield situation, Vina applauded: “You predicted everything, Little Ai. How did you know arranging it this way would counter them?”
“Because they came to us first,” Aira said calmly. “They found their own countered targets. I just switched the matchups.”
When you don’t play the numbers game but only play mechanics, one or two is fine, but if four opponents with different mechanics dare to play this way, can’t I just swap positions?
Going from a small advantage to a huge disadvantage, the reversal of the situation fell into the Blade Demon’s eyes.
He knew he couldn’t just sit and watch anymore.
Tap tap, tap tap.
Unhurried footsteps, insignificant in the noisy battlefield, but a powerful aura emanated from him. The four generals who were beating up their enemies couldn’t help but shudder.
Everyone looked at this special presence.
Aira blinked her eyes, looked carefully, and felt it looked somewhat familiar, seemed to be one of the demon race’s experts.
“This is bad, he’s a powerful enemy.” The pink-haired big-breasted girl said to her companions in her high-pitched voice. “We must go down and help our teammates.”
This was only natural, and the girls of the Hero Party had long been prepared. They didn’t even understand why she needed to specifically put on that voice for this.
But soon, Aira stood in front of her companions and said softly: “I think this enemy must be very formidable and we can’t be careless, so— I suggest we use the Anti-Demon King Formation against him.”
A few minutes later, the four generals repelled their respective enemies and found openings to retreat to the sides. The four strange demons were seriously injured and couldn’t catch up, so they also retreated behind the man.
“Lord Blade, we…”
“No need to say more.” The Blade Demon continued walking forward. “Wait in the back.”
With each step he took, a black blade would grow from his body. Some fell into his hands to become weapons, while others left his body and floated around him like a pack of bloodthirsty monsters.
But he quickly stopped because he saw a strange formation — an ice-blue long-haired girl holding a longsword in a defensive posture, with a blonde girl and a red twin-tailed loli standing on either side behind her.
There was also a pretty pink-haired big-breasted girl, supposedly the legendary succubus, standing a bit farther away, as if she were a cheerleader.
These girls didn’t attack or do anything else. They just maintained their guarding posture, facing him with full vigilance.
The Blade Demon frowned: “What trick are you playing?”
