Chapter 35: Counterattack

***

Winter had arrived, the warm seasonal winds had ceased, and the remaining heat would help the demon race’s northern cities get through this period.

The central and southern regions weren’t cold at all. These areas didn’t need the seasonal winds to blow warmth over, because the “furnace” was nearby.

But precisely because of that—

“Did you hear? We’re heading to the snowfield this time.”

“What’s a snowfield?”

“It’s a place where it snows all day long and the mountains are sealed by heavy snow.”

“Uh… what’s snow?”

This was a conversation taking place at the military assembly point.

Living in the warmest part of demon territory, most people from the central and southern regions had never seen snow in their entire lives.

“What’s all this noise? Everyone shut up!”

The lord of a small central-southern town walked over and scolded the whispering soldiers. He was one of the local nobles participating in this military expedition. He had just returned from a meeting in Dark Star City yesterday and was now hastily making preparations.

Sending troops to attack the south was certainly a thankless task, but he was more afraid that the succubus from Light Cross-Star City would continue pushing north.

Yes, at the meeting in Dark Star City, Lady Thorn had shared the intelligence she possessed. Although there were some more reliable speculations, until they found concrete evidence, everyone could only accept this reality—

They were fighting against an unprecedented succubus.

Don’t ask what kind of succubus, the answer is a pink-haired big-breasted girl.

Returning to the present, the lord looked at his soldiers who were numerous but of questionable quality. In the end, he couldn’t bring himself to punish them because these were his own household troops.

“Don’t complain. Nobody wants to go to the snowfield. If we can surround the enemy army in the city, we won’t have to chase them to the snowfield, so you better move quickly when the time comes!”

“Also, the big shots from Dark Star City will send experts over.”

In the north, in the heartland of demon territory, Dark Star City.

Experts to match the four demon generals like Rockbreaker had already been found, conveniently also four people. They looked barely human at all and had already set out ahead.

Besides these four, there was another special existence whose strength surpassed theirs.

Below the city gate of Dark Star City stood an unremarkable-looking man. He didn’t have too many non-human features on his body, so walking on the streets of this largest demon city, no one would give him a second glance.

But he was a first-class expert who ranked among the best in all of demon territory, the Blade Demon, known as a Great Demon.

He didn’t need to carry his own luggage for long journeys; he had an attendant specifically to carry things for him.

Lady Thorn escorted him all the way to the city gate and said, “Your mission is very special. I trust you already know this. Your opponent isn’t any one of those four traitors, but rather a certain missing person. With your strength, you should at least be able to protect yourself against him, and that will count as mission accomplished.”

The Blade Demon’s mission was to force the Demon King Io to show himself. As for whether he could truly protect himself, well, he thought he could.

Lady Thorn brought out a birdcage from behind her, grabbed the crow inside, and grew several thorned vines from her arm. The vines tightly bound the crow, with thorns piercing into its body, frantically drinking its blood.

“Caw! Squawk!”

After two screams, the crow stopped moving, but a few seconds later it opened its eyes again, its pupils a deathly gray color.

This scene left the attendant dumbfounded.

“It will follow by your side and report everything to me.”

Having said this, Lady Thorn turned and left.

After she was completely gone, the Blade Demon called out to his attendant and prepared to depart as well.

The attendant looked at the crow circling nearby and said with lingering fear, “That lady uses this thing to send messages, isn’t it a bit… too wasteful?”

It wasn’t about cruelty or anything, demon race people didn’t care about that. The main issue was that sending a message required killing a trained crow each time. That was so extravagant and wasteful!

As fellow workers, he empathized with the servants who raised crows for Lady Thorn.

The Blade Demon stopped and glanced at him. “You’re from outside the city?”

The attendant was a bit nervous. “Yes, I’m from Guardian Town.”

Guardian Town was one of the military strongholds defending Dark Star City. Compared to Dark Star City, it was indeed a rural place.

The Blade Demon snorted coldly. “I know. You outsiders have been following Demon King Io’s rules for decades, but remember this now, we people of Dark Star City have our own noble refinement. That’s proof of our bloodline.”

Simply put, without some extravagant and wasteful behavior, how could one demonstrate their noble status?

Only upstarts like Io would promote using everything to its fullest and call it pragmatism with some fancy name. Ha, utterly ridiculous.

“Understood, sir!”

……

“Do you understand?” Aira said earnestly. “Let your father go in peace. We really don’t need him here.”

After saying last time that they would fight a defensive battle of annihilation, Celeste suddenly remembered that there weren’t many troops in the city and came over asking if she should call her father to bring troops back.

Aira quickly explained to her. In our previous campaigns, the main purpose was to occupy territory, which required manpower, so the army was the protagonist. But the upcoming battle of annihilation aims primarily to eliminate the enemy’s high-value units and strike at their effective fighting strength, so we experts have become the protagonists.

“I understand.” Celeste nodded gently and murmured, “This is what they call different directions…”

Aira didn’t know what she actually understood, but as long as she didn’t cause trouble, it was fine.

As for the current defense situation in Light Cross-Star City, the elven and human armies had already withdrawn, though they could support the territories of both races at any time.

“After this battle, I need to return to the church headquarters once,” Lia said. “To call people over to establish a branch.”

As expected of the Saintess, she had just joined the faith but hadn’t forgotten her proper duties.

Vina cupped her chin in both hands, her peach blossom eyes turning. “We’ve been gone from the kingdom for quite a while now. I wonder how long General Glengo can hold out.”

The higher-ups’ situation was hard to say, but the Magic Court was probably going crazy with anxiety.

Everyone had reasons to return, so Aira actually hoped they would come quickly.

Finally, on the 7th day after occupying Light Cross-Star City, the watchtower on Huai Mountain discovered traces of the enemy.

Boner, who was on duty, rushed back to report immediately, his bones nearly fell apart from running.

“Lady Aira, they’re here. Based on the follow-up, there appear to be over 10,000 people. They’re marching in haste, but their formation isn’t very orderly.”

The numbers were a bit frightening, but from the formation alone, they clearly weren’t elite troops.

“Since they’re not betting everything on the army’s overall combat strength, it means they must have brought quite a few experts.” Aira inquired, “Can you identify them?”

Boner shook his head.

This wasn’t his fault. Many demon race people had very striking appearances, some had bones protruding from their shoulders, some had extra heads, and many ordinary soldiers even looked more distinctive than their commanders.

“It’s fine. We’ll know when the fighting starts.”

Aira stood up and called out to the girls of the Hero Party, heading to the Huai Mountain front line to meet the enemy.
