Chapter 44: The Answer
***
There was still a full day and a bit more time remaining. Sissa wasn’t in any hurry at all, and sat down beside Isadora.
“During those days when I was trapped underground, I was always thinking about the past, since besides memories, I had nothing else to do. You know what? Just because you weren’t home that day, I ended up being imprisoned for 1,200 years.”
Sissa’s head rotated 12 full circles on her neck before stopping to stare at her and say:
“Sally, you have such a cruel heart.”
Isadora said nothing.
Not far away, the Hero Party’s Dragon Eagle landed, and the girls ran over on foot. Seeing this scene, they quickly stopped in their tracks.
Sissa also saw them, but just like her attitude toward other people, as long as they didn’t interfere with her, she treated them as if they didn’t exist.
Now that her good friend was already captured, she was in high spirits and even had the leisure to chat:
“I don’t understand why so many people are trying to stop me. I made 100 wishes to the gods, and I haven’t even figured out how to use them yet. When the time comes, I’ll ask for everyone’s opinions too.”
Hearing this, Aira couldn’t help but ask: “But they’ve already been killed by you. How are you going to ask for their opinions?”
As soon as the pink-haired girl spoke up, all the girls around were terrified. Celeste almost drew her sword, and Lia quickly grabbed her hand.
Don’t ask why, it’s convenient for giving blessings.
“Of course they’ll have to figure it out themselves. As the people proposing opinions, they should be more proactive.” Sissa patted her sleeve. “If they’re not proactive, that means they have no opinions.”
“…That’s quite impressive.”
Aira responded verbally while rapidly calculating in her mind.
From the battle at the sealed area, Sissa’s stats were extremely high, and more importantly, her attack methods were unpredictable, so she could probably ignore Celeste’s front line and directly attack the others.
Could the most fragile member of the Hero Party withstand at least one hit and hold on until the Saintess’s healing blessing?
She didn’t know. It was too risky, she didn’t dare gamble.
“Alright, enough talk.” Sissa lifted Isadora with one hand and started walking back. “I need to take her back. She’s been running around outside for 1,200 years, what a naughty girl. But it’s fine. Once we’re back, 100 wishes await me.”
Aira felt someone bump her arm. It was Celeste, who was gripping her sword hilt tightly. The knight’s sword could be unsheathed at any moment, coordinating with Zero hiding in the shadows for a sudden assault.
It would be a difficult fight, but if they didn’t stop Sissa now, there would be even less chance of victory after the sacrifice was completed.
Fight, or not fight?
Aira felt tremendous pressure, unable to decide on this question. It wasn’t about fear of exposing her abilities or anything. If they really fought, she would definitely pull out the Sword of the Dead without hesitation.
At worst, she could just say it was a type of necromancy magic. Look, this one’s a bit different from the Demon King’s original sword, right?
The problem was: could they win, and how many casualties would there be? Moreover, once the battle started, the opponent only needed to kill Isadora first, and the sacrifice would be complete. She wasn’t making a move now probably because she had some sense of ceremony.
What to do? Should they attack or not?
Just then, Aira glanced at Isadora’s condition and discovered that there was no despair in the elven elder’s eyes, only calm.
It wasn’t forced composure, but genuine calm. She didn’t seem to think that the elven race would be finished if she died.
As the only survivor who escaped back then, why would she react this way? Did she still have a trump card?
“Don’t be hasty, Celeste. None of you should be hasty.”
Aira pulled the girl back a few steps, her mind racing through memories.
From the moment they arrived at the elven territory and met Isadora, every conversation they’d had, every request she’d made, and any arrangements she might have made in secret.
“We’re leaving.” She took a deep breath. “Let’s go back first!”
Celeste asked in surprise: “But they…”
“Let’s go back first. I need to check something!”
She made a gesture toward the nearby bushes, signaling Zero in hiding to cancel the operation. The Hero Party went to where they had landed earlier, mounted the Dragon Eagle, and took off.
Before flying away from the border, they could still see Sissa hopping along with Isadora in one hand, walking back.
“If she succeeds,” Celeste asked quietly, “can we, the elven race and the human race combined, handle her?”
No one answered, because they were in the air with the wind howling loudly, making it impossible to hear.
But she soon discovered that things might still have a chance, because Aira hadn’t given up. She wasn’t retreating in defeat, but making a purposeful tactical move. After landing at the gathering place for idlers, the pink-haired girl jumped off the Dragon Eagle in one leap and rushed toward the tree house in another leap.
Lambert, Trika, and the others hadn’t slept. With such a major event today, they didn’t dare sleep and had been waiting for news from the girls.
“You’re back! How did it go?”
“Did Elder Isadora escape?”
Everyone crowded forward, but Aira didn’t stop for even a step and kept running ahead. They had no choice but to turn to Celeste and the others instead.
Before the girl could speak, an excited small voice piped up: “Found it! I was right!”
She was so excited that her voice involuntarily went up a pitch.
Aira came running over holding those two pages from the fable collection.
“Look, the story says that the Evil God’s requirement was to sacrifice all the villagers. And we all know that on the day she poisoned everyone, Isadora wasn’t home and escaped disaster, so one person was missed. But that was then, after more than 1,000 years have passed, there’s something different.”
“What’s different?” Celeste didn’t understand what she was trying to say.
Aira cleared her throat and looked toward the Saintess: “Miss Lia, may I ask, what’s the key to household registration?”
Household registration? Why was this question directed at her?
Lia was stunned for a moment, then understood something, and her pretty face turned red: “You, you, you, let me explain! I didn’t mean it that way. I wasn’t looking down on non-local household registration. When I said that to you before, it was because… because we had just met and weren’t familiar yet. Of course we need to get to know each other first before we can… can…”
“Calm down.”
Aira had intended to throw out a leading question, but didn’t expect to be misunderstood. She had to explain herself: “Two key points: first, place of birth, and second, family relationships. That is to say, if during these years, Isadora secretly went to the ruins of the sealed area and personally gave birth to a child there, what do you think would happen?”
Celeste’s mind went blank with a buzzing sound: “So Sissa actually needs to kill two people, not just one.”
“Mm-hmm. Elder Isadora made a request of us, and only one request, to help her protect the few children in the diplomatic mission.” Aira turned around to look at the five young elves who were stunned like wooden chickens. “Which of you is an orphan or from a single-parent family?”
This series of revelations was the real thunderbolt, striking them so hard that their minds buzzed for a long time before they could recover.
As for family situations, Trika was the first to snap out of it and said: “Most of us are. In the elven race, there’s a saying — the forest nurtured every elf.”
