Chapter 40: Essence

***

The heavily armored warriors in the front row could not describe their feelings. When that withered hand broke through the earth, their hearts felt as if someone had squeezed them tight, and beads of sweat the size of beans fell one by one.

They watched helplessly as she pushed aside the ground and crawled out from underground.

Her hair was withered yellow like weeds, her body was thin as a hemp stalk, her face no longer human, her body surface was charred black, and there were large and small red magma-like wounds.

But soon, a demonic wind blew, and her body rapidly changed, as if the hands of a clock had been turned back a full circle, and life returned to her body.

Emerald green long hair, snow-white skin, paired with a petite body, she was clearly a little girl of only 120 years old, a future flower of the elven race.

She tilted her head slightly and showed a brilliant smile: “Good morning, are you here to pick me up?”

The captain of the heavy infantry responsible for the first three rows suppressed the fear in his heart and shouted: “Enemy attack! Everyone form ranks!”

Thud thud thud!

Huge square shields were set up on the ground, walls rose up one after another, hiding behind them to block their line of sight and helping them regain their courage.

The little girl paid no attention to their reaction and continued smiling: “Is anyone there? I’d like to ask, I have a good friend who’s missing. Do you know where she is?”

Of course no one would answer. The only response was the sound of the army preparing for battle.

Shields were raised, archers stepped forward, taking cover to draw their bows and nock arrows.

“She should be 1,330 years old this year, an old lady now.”

Bowstrings were drawn tight, ready to release.

“Her name is Sally, but she might have changed her name. Do you know where she is?”

“Archers, loose!”

The bowstring, drawn tight like a full moon, snapped with explosive force, a rain of arrows poured down, turning the place where the little girl stood into a sieve. Even her body had several arrows stuck in it.

No effect whatsoever. No screams, no bleeding, no falling down. The arrows were like shooting a dead person.

It was as if they couldn’t kill someone who was already dead.

At this moment, the little girl’s smile disappeared, and her expression darkened.

“Why won’t you answer me? Why won’t you tell me?”

She walked forward, her body drifting like sand grains to the front of the heavy infantry, her hand reaching straight through the shield to grab the opponent’s neck.

Poof!

Fresh blood gushed from his throat, the soldier’s eyes rolled back, and a strange blackness spread from his neck.

“Let him go!”

People on both sides raised their square shields and rammed forward forcefully. There was a clang, as if they had hit a real wall, and they fell to the ground instead.

The formation of the first row collapsed.

Held up by the neck by the little girl, the blackness spread to his brain. In agony worse than death, he spoke:

“I don’t know… I don’t know who you’re talking about… I…”

“Is that so? How unfortunate.”

With a crack, the heavy infantryman’s neck was easily crushed like rotten wood, his head fell to the ground and rolled several times.

“Mage formation, attack with full force!”

“But our people are still in the attack range…”

“We can’t worry about that now!”

A few seconds later, the head on the ground opened its eyes again, pupils turning ruby red.

A thousand meters away, Aira breathed a sigh of relief, finally she had connected to a dead person.

Let me see what’s happening on site — whoa, this young person!

She immediately spotted the green-haired little girl. She was the only one on site whose art style was different from everyone else, obviously Sissa herself. Around her lay many heavy infantry scattered about, huge square shields also fallen to the ground. The seemingly impregnable wall had been broken in an instant.

Dragon Eagle riders were approaching overhead, the elves on them raising spears and hurling them furiously at her.

Whoosh—!

Very accurate, landing precisely… into Sissa’s hand. She caught the spear barehanded and threw it back, skewering the aerial cavalry along with their eagle.

“Peterwen!”

The squad leader of the Dragon Eagle riders cried out in anguish, but there was no time for grief. He waved his hands to signal the others: “Gain altitude, don’t get close!”

The aerial cavalry were different from ground infantry, the entire race had only so much wealth, and they absolutely couldn’t be thrown away uselessly when attacks were ineffective.

Aira saw this scene through the corpse’s eyes and felt a chill of fear.

Good thing she hadn’t followed along to watch the excitement from above, or she might have crashed. Her own reflexes might be able to dodge, but the Dragon Eagle wouldn’t be able to.

She watched as Sissa pulled an arrow from her body and casually threw it, bringing down another Dragon Eagle along with its rider.

At this moment, the mages’ attack also arrived. A team of nearly 200 people chanted spells together, awakening the forest. Vines in the bushes grew wildly, coiling toward Sissa like snakes. Several large trees even stood up from the ground, swinging their massive branches in sweeping attacks.

See, she knew the forest was also part of the elven race.

But as for the actual effect…

Aira saw the vines wrapped around Sissa rapidly wither, strange black substance contaminating along the root systems, and knew what the result would be.

Throughout the entire process, the little girl didn’t even move once.

How terrifying!

The corpse on the ground closed its eyes, and a thousand meters away, the pink-haired big-breasted girl opened hers.

“Zero, come with me!”

Returning to their previous location, Celeste was the first to see them and waved: “Aira, Zero, we’re over here… where did you two go just now?”

“There’s no time to explain all that.”

Aira came back and grabbed Lia with one hand, and Vina who was about to excitedly say “so you’re dropping the act, huh” with the other, saying urgently to Celeste:

“We must evacuate immediately!”

“What exactly happened?”

“They’re no match for Sissa!”

Aira had figured it out. In the game rules set by the Evil God, Sissa not only had a clear objective but also a time limit, while they as opponents only needed to hide and survive in a seemingly closed but actually large map until 3 days later.

What was this? This was asymmetric competitive confrontation! If you had to add a few more words in front, it would be survival horror escape asymmetric competition.

She had played a similar game in her previous life called Dead by Daylight.

Because Aira’s attitude was very resolute, Celeste was also resolute in execution. During the retreat, they even commandeered a few Whistle Deer, rode them back to the tree house, packed their luggage, then ran in the farthest direction for quite a while.

They didn’t even spare a glance at how the battle behind them was going.

“A bit further ahead is where the idle people gather, the place where Lambert lives,” Celeste asked Aira for her opinion. “Should we settle there first?”

“Mm.”

“What about after that? What do we do next?”

“I don’t know. Sissa wants to kill Isadora to complete the sacrifice. She doesn’t know where the target is, but now we don’t know either.”

Aira dismounted from the Whistle Deer and caught her breath, calming her emotions.

“Let’s rest first, then try to gather information.”
