Chapter 4: I Want to See

***

Roars visibly couldn’t hold back his composure, his thick white beard swishing back and forth like a broom several times: “A real Evil God? It almost succeeded?”

Celeste nodded very seriously and described the situation to him, including the merfolk’s decades-long conspiracy and planning all for one ritual, and particularly emphasized that after the ritual was stopped, the Evil God manifested in the starry sky above and took away the souls of his servants.

“When He manifested, I felt a tremendous and eerie power that made me almost unable to move, and I could only watch helplessly as everything ended before regaining my senses.”

With such a level of power, there was no doubt, it was indeed a god.

Roars held the teacup lid in his hand, unable to decide whether to put it down or not, and finally smiled bitterly: “I didn’t expect you would encounter such things so quickly. I thought it would be at least another 10 years or so.”

The girls of the hero party had only just turned 18 this year.

“It was Aira who discovered their conspiracy,” Celeste immediately continued. “And it was she who created the opportunity to destroy the temple and stop the ritual.”

Roars nodded, looking at the pink-haired big-breasted girl with increasingly appreciative eyes.

That’s right, definitely the fifth genius of the human race, the final piece of the puzzle in the team, one of the best five people.

Thinking back, actually speaking, what the girls of the hero party faced this time wasn’t the Evil God itself, but the merfolk cultists, the Evil God would only descend if they had failed. So from an age-matching perspective, it was barely acceptable.

The old man’s mood eased slightly as he poured tea for both of them: “What would you like to eat? Let’s talk slowly.”

The palace kitchen had just delivered breakfast, with some pastries and sweets that he hadn’t had time to eat yet.

Celeste didn’t want anything particular to eat, holding her cup with both hands, content to eat whatever was available.

Aira asked for a crispy cake, nibbling on it in small bites.

“Teacher, we drove away the merfolk and killed all the priests of this generation, but they’ve returned to the sea. Won’t they try again somewhere else after some time?” Celeste first asked about her most pressing concern. “Summoning the Evil God in a place we don’t know about.”

“No, based on your description, this Evil God is definitely not a deity of the merfolk race,” Roars said. “The merfolk only encountered Him by chance. Neither the ritual implements nor the contract terms can be replicated.”

Aira munched on her crispy cake while thinking that he was indeed the great hero of the human race, his knowledge was vast, immediately providing such an accurate assessment.

Celeste thought for a moment and said: “So, regarding the threat of this Evil God, is it resolved?”

Roars frowned: “Hard to say.”

There was no reasoning involved, nor any need to explain why, with something like an Evil God, how could human thinking possibly predict it?

At this point, Aira finally finished the crispy cake in her hands and interjected: “In that case, could we learn about the Evil God to prevent future problems?”

“Wait a moment.”

Roars got up and went to his study. After a while, he came out carrying a book collection he had made himself and pulled out a sheet of paper from it.

“There aren’t many reliable records about Evil Gods. The last time one appeared and was recorded in history was during a war that swept across half the continent. Blood and suffering summoned Him, causing devastation in just a few days, leaving only one-third of the continent’s total population alive. In the end, because too few people survived, the war could no longer continue, the Evil God couldn’t replenish with new flesh and blood, and it took several higher races working together to send Him back to the void.”

Aira took the yellowed parchment and looked at it. There was no written explanation, only a heavy oil painting in dark red representing the blood-soaked earth. A monster with a goat’s head and hooves, a torso covered in rotting branches, six lower limbs supporting it on the ground, standing a full 100 meters tall, appeared strikingly before her eyes.

Whether it was actually 100 meters was hard to say, but the painting showed several houses that only reached up to its knee level for reference.

Celeste also leaned over to look: “It feels… not quite the same.”

“How is it different?”

“The Evil God the merfolk wanted to summon passed through the starry sky that night. He had no specific form, you could only see the stars around Him being distorted, just like… like…”

Aira interjected: “Like gravitational lensing.”

The two turned to look at her, as if asking what gravitational lensing meant.

“I was just talking nonsense, please continue.”

“Like… ripples spreading across water.” Celeste finally found a suitable comparison.

After hearing her description, Roars frowned deeply, unable to recall any similar records.

Aira saw the timing was about right and added: “Oh, I think I heard the merfolk priest muttering a name — Iselis, which seemed to be the Evil God’s name.”

“There’s a name? Are there any other characteristics?”

“Also, He grants the wishes of those who make contracts with Him, but not in the way they want… For example, the merfolk priest gained great power, but at the cost of his life.”

Ritual, stars, shapeless distortion, method of realization.

Roars wrote these terms in his notebook and said seriously: “I need to search through everything. Perhaps there will be clues in history. Come back tomorrow.”

He needed to immediately enter his study and search through all the books he had read extensively.

This wasn’t some ethereal legend written on paper, but an imminent or even narrowly-avoided threat.

“We’ll trouble you then, teacher.”

Celeste put down her teacup, bowed, and left the Hall of Tribute with Aira.

It wasn’t late yet, returning to camp, they could probably make it back for lunch, so they didn’t need to rush. After leaving the palace gates, they walked back slowly.

Not far from the palace was the Royal Garden. Two months had passed, and it was no longer the best flower season, the garden wasn’t blooming as brilliantly, but you could still smell the lingering fragrance of flowers.

Passing by here, Aira couldn’t help but think of that sunshine-like girl who always picked various flowers to give to her. However, recently, for some unknown reason, she had become gloomy, no longer picking roadside flowers but only coveting her small garden.

It might be because Harbor City had no flowers, only grooved kelp, seaweed, sea grass, and fishy-smelling plants, causing the girl to lack sunshine energy.

Or perhaps she had always been a dark assassin who used to stab her from behind with knives, and now just wanted to try a different method.

While Aira was having this internal debate, she suddenly heard the girl beside her say:

“You have regular purification sessions, don’t you?”

“…What?”

“Miss Lia mentioned that night that you have something evil in you that requires many purification treatments.” Celeste said, “Is it conducted regularly every few days?”

Ah, why bring this up suddenly?

Aira couldn’t understand her intention and could only continue with the previous excuse: “There is such a thing, but it’s not regular, sometimes a day or two early, sometimes a day or two late.”

“Then it’s been 5 days now, don’t you need another session?” The girl’s ice-blue gaze fixed on her. “Since we all know about it, you don’t need to be secretive anymore. I can sit nearby and see if there’s anywhere I can help.”
