Chapter 38: The Last Survivor

***

Aira carefully walked forward, passing the guard line, and saw that the faces of the surrounding guards were filled with terror.

You’re all very afraid? Actually, I’m afraid too, but what can we do? We have to listen to what needs to be heard.

Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes and stepped forward.

Hehehehehehe.

First came a burst of eerie laughter.

Although the laughter wasn’t very cheerful, you could tell she was extremely happy. But Aira could understand, if you’d been imprisoned for 1,200 years and were about to be released, you’d be this happy too.

However, after taking another half step forward, the laughter suddenly stopped, replaced by an unclear utterance—

【Did I miss one? Sorry…】

A hint of disbelief, a hint of guilt, coming from the remorse of not killing everyone properly.

Another half step forward, and the voice gradually grew louder.

【I will, I will, I will, I will!】

Aira opened her eyes and turned to run, taking three steps as two to leave the sealed area, and all sounds disappeared at once.

“I’ve finished listening. Some nonsensical words about whether she will or won’t, missing or not missing.” She looked at Isadora, “Do you know anything about this?”

“I don’t know. Perhaps there will be more information tomorrow. Thank you for your hard work, Miss Aira. Since there are no new insights, let’s go back and rest.”

“Alright.”

However, as soon as she returned to the tree house, Aira immediately gathered all her companions, pulling them together seriously and said: “The little girl named Sissa in the Sacred Spring seal is about to wake up.”

“What is she going to do?” Celeste was the first to ask.

Aira took out those two pages, pointing to the story on them and said:

“Look, the fable mentions that in order to summon an Evil God, Sissa wanted to sacrifice everyone in the village. But actually, someone escaped at the time, so this sacrifice wasn’t completed. I guess when she wakes up this time, she wants to make up for that last remaining person.”

This information was revealed by Elder Laiteni before his death.

“By the way, this person was originally her good friend.”

After hearing Aira’s explanation, the girls had various thoughts.

“For the sake of sacrifice, she wouldn’t even spare her friend? How terrible.” Vina said, then thought of something, “Oh right, Zero, I’m not talking about you. You’re different from her, yours was passive.”

“…”

“Can we find out who this person is?” Celeste said calmly, “If we protect them and prevent Sissa from completing the sacrifice, wouldn’t that resolve the crisis?”

Aira shrugged her small fragrant shoulders and said helplessly: “Theoretically, yes, but the problem now is that the person who knew about this and might have been willing to tell us is already dead.”

Moreover, Elder Laiteni’s final words indicated that he died precisely to cover up this matter.

“Does Elder Isadora know? She seems to have been in charge of this all along.”

“She might know.”

Aira’s words meant that even if others knew, they didn’t seem like they would tell, and she couldn’t just go and probe first.

“Anyway, let’s see what the elven race does first.”

The elven race indeed took action.

According to their initial estimate, the Sacred Spring seal would be lifted in half a month, at which point Sissa would wake up and do terrible things. Counting from the day the girls first arrived, it had already been 11 days.

Even including today, there were only 5 days left.

In the afternoon, almost dinner time, Zero ran back from outside. She had spent the entire day outside gathering information, truly fulfilling her role as a scout.

“Elder Trinia conducted a new round of mobilization, gathering many elites, no fewer than 3,000, with an average level that looks slightly higher than the day of the counterattack against the demon army.”

Fewer in number, higher in quality, this was preparation specifically targeting high-risk individuals.

This way, the forest defense battle from the past few days looked very much like a morale-boosting exercise.

Hearing this news, Aira felt somewhat relieved.

With so many people attacking together, the chances of winning should be a bit higher, right?

She originally wanted to ask Elder Trinia about the situation, but the other party said she couldn’t help, because she wasn’t from that village, and she lived very far away when she was young, so what she knew wasn’t different from what others knew.

“The only one in the tribe who knows the details is Elder Laiteni, who was a member of the ‘Enforcement Squad’ back then.”

The Enforcement Squad was the elven race’s internal management team, with the authority to judge tribe members. When the Sissa incident happened, they were the ones who went to handle it.

As soon as Aira heard this, she knew it was hopeless, because Elder Laiteni had died right in front of her, and it had already been many days.

She turned to look for Elder Isadora again, but didn’t see anyone, probably busy somewhere.

As evening fell, she went back to rest.

Zzzz

The second day, also the 12th day.

The two new sentences that appeared today were 【Within three days】 and 【If not in the forest, it doesn’t count, that’s about right】.

“I think she was talking to someone and got game qualification from them.” Aira tried to analyze, “Within three days is the time limit for her to complete the sacrifice. The forest is a location restriction. What do you think?”

Isadora neither confirmed nor denied, thought for a moment and asked: “Who is she talking to?”

Aira blinked: “I don’t know.”

It might be Iselis.

“By the way, do you know whether there were any survivors from the village where Sissa lived back then?”

“I don’t know. Why do you ask?”

“Nothing, just asking casually.”

Aira didn’t know if she really didn’t understand or simply didn’t want to say, but in any case, she couldn’t get information from here.

Leaving the sealed area and returning to the tree house, she told the Hero Party today’s new intelligence.

“That is to say, after Sissa wakes up, there are only three days to kill that survivor. As long as we drag it out for three days, the sacrifice will fail.” Celeste quickly thought of the key point, “So, shouldn’t we find that person, tell them about this, and help them hide and protect themselves?”

“Mm-hmm, I think,” Aira thought of something and shook her head, “it might not be necessary.”

“Not necessary?”

Just as Celeste was puzzled, a series of urgent knocks on the door interrupted the girls’ battle meeting.

Standing outside the door was Elder Trinia. She had come personally without sending a subordinate, and as soon as they met, she urgently asked: “Have any of you seen Elder Isadora? Miss Aira, I remember you met with her this morning.”

“Yes, I did meet with her.” The pink-haired big-breasted girl blinked, “What’s wrong? Did she disappear?”

“Yes, I can’t find her. I asked several people but couldn’t get an answer, but I have urgent business with her.” Trinia was very annoyed, “Regarding the deployment around the sealed area, we clearly agreed to arrange it today.”

Aira sighed inwardly, as expected.

Similar in age, and always actively taking responsibility for matters related to the sealed area, Isadora was precisely that survivor from back then.
