Chapter 37: New Abilities of the Sword of the Dead

***

An additional chair had been placed in front of the desk, and the document papers with the written report still lay there, only now there was one more person looking at them.

“So we’ve already been here for 8 days, I hadn’t even noticed.” said a soft voice.

A few words in the middle were slightly stammered, making it sound even more endearing.

“Mm… During the first few days of the war, the elven race was busy, and we had nothing to do, so time passed rather quickly.”

“I see.”

“By the way, Aira, regarding the report, I didn’t write about you guys killing the enemy general, worried that someone higher up might think it looks bad, saying we’re doing things beyond our duties. Do you think I should include it?”

“I think your judgment is correct.” The girl smiled sweetly, “Celeste, you’re so thoughtful.”

Her voice was soft again, and her words were pleasant to hear.

After closing the documents, Aira brought up topics about daily life.

“How do you feel after living in the forest for so many days? I think it’s pretty good, the air in the tree house is nice, and the glowing lights outside at night are very beautiful. The food tastes good too, although there aren’t many seasonings, the natural flavors of the ingredients are excellent.”

“I’m doing well too, it’s just…”

“You couldn’t sleep at first? Hehe, me too.”

Looking at Celeste, whose mood had clearly brightened, Aira hummed softly to herself.

Building relationships was like this, just chat about everything. First discuss business, then daily life, anything could be talked about. When there was really nothing left to chat about, talk about awkward things, then make yourself feel awkward too, and the distance would be shortened all at once.

Just casually chatting like this every few days, and by the time they form the allied army later, the favorability would be built up almost completely. Then it would just be a matter of one sentence.

Just as she was feeling pleased with herself, Celeste clutched at her clothes hem and said hesitantly: “Aira, I want to ask you something.”

“Go ahead~”

“It’s just… the things Vina usually says… they’re fake, right?”

Aira’s delicate body trembled.

She saw Celeste staring at her with nervous, anxious eyes, and a hint of expectation.

“Of course they’re fake. Honestly, sometimes I don’t even understand what she’s talking about.”

Without hesitation.

Just kidding, how could she possibly admit to such things when she still needed to build favorability.

“Really?”

At the moment she was about to blurt it out, for some reason, Aira had a strange feeling — if this got exposed later, she might be in serious trouble.

“…Really.”

Slightly hesitant, but still answered firmly.

She couldn’t very well say that those rumors were true and that she was fooling around outside every day.

Celeste became happy again and chatted with her for a while longer, talking about not being able to sleep on the first night when they came to the elven race, about how she didn’t really like the taste of cold mixed firefly grass because there were too few seasonings, about her views on this war…

Half an hour later, Aira finally found an opportunity and pretended to yawn:

“I’m going back to sleep now, good night Celeste~”

“Good night!”

Returning to her own tree house, climbing onto the bed, covering herself with the small blanket, Aira peacefully closed her eyes.

Next, she just had to wait for all the elven race matters to be completely finished, then after returning to the royal capital, lay low for a while, then find an excuse to visit Harbor City, and she could plot to lead the army back to demon territories.

As long as all the elven race matters were completely finished…

“Sigh!”

Aira’s eyes opened again.

Indeed, she just needed the elven race affairs to be settled, but the problem was this matter couldn’t be easily resolved.

Throwing off the small blanket, getting down from the bed, checking the situation at the door, locking it from the inside, then closing the windows properly.

Going to this extent, the only person who could still sneak in would be Zero alone, but Zero already knew enough, so it didn’t matter.

After completing all the small details, Aira returned to the bedside and took out her weapon.

Bones gleaming white, with starlight flowing at the hilt, emanating an unsettling luminescence.

【Sword of the Dead: Bone Caller – Gaze of the Stars】

Iselis’s modifications to it included lower delay, sharper blade edge, and sometimes it could even attack automatically.

Besides these, was there anything else?

Aira thought this as she suddenly felt something was off, standing up and lightly swinging the Sword of the Dead in front of her.

A massive figure over 2 meters tall suddenly appeared.

“Io!” Bloodslaughter Lord stared with a pair of bloodshot large eyes and said, “You are the Demon King Io!”

Oh my, a real ghost appeared!

Aira was almost startled, but upon closer inspection, she found that Bloodslaughter Lord’s form was ethereal, had no shadow, and his feet weren’t touching the ground.

Undead state?

After a while she figured it out. The original ability of the Sword of the Dead was to summon souls from the River Styx who were willing to serve her back to the present world, becoming undead warriors. And now, it had gained an additional ability.

【Forced Conscription】

People killed by the Sword of the Dead, regardless of whether their souls were willing or not, would be forcibly enslaved by the Sword of the Dead for 3 days.

“You’re still as evil as before, not letting me go even after death,” Bloodslaughter Lord said angrily, “Demon King Io, I will never serve under your…”

“Too much talk!”

Aira slashed with her sword, actively canceling the conscription and sending him into the River Styx.

She had Zero in undead form to use, who needed this guy? Not only couldn’t he act on his own, but he was also time-limited.

After completely sending away Bloodslaughter Lord, sitting back on the bed, Aira looked at the Sword of the Dead in her hand with somewhat complicated feelings.

Although the new ability hadn’t been put to use yet, she could see it was very powerful, but there was one small problem — since she was given so many enhancements, did this mean that Sissa, who was about to awaken, would be somewhat difficult to fight?

Giggle.

There was only a light laugh in her mind, very brief, then no other sound.

“Sigh.”

Putting away the Sword of the Dead, Aira lay down and covered herself with the small blanket. There was no point thinking so much about it now, better to sleep first and rest up.

Zzzz

The elven race’s victory celebration lasted for a total of 3 days, with people singing and dancing every day, sharing delicious food, and spreading the names of the two heroes.

By the third day, even the children in the forest who were decades old knew about the Sky Knight Aira, with pink hair and large chest, who walked with a bounce and strong presence.

And on the morning of the fourth day, an elf came to the tree house looking for Aira, saying the elder requested her presence.

After arriving at the location, Isadora turned to look at her with a serious expression:

“There have been new changes in the sounds from the sealed area. Would you like to go take a look?”

“Yes.”

How could she not want to? Not listening to information would be like sitting and waiting for doom.

Aira followed her to the sealed area again. Compared to a few days ago, the current sealed area had added more than 10 guards, but the area they guarded had expanded outward by a circle, with no one daring to stand within hundreds of meters of the seal’s center.

“The shift change time is now every 2 hours,” Isadora told her. “Standing here for even a little longer makes one’s mental condition very poor.”
