Chapter 28: A Trap Question

***

Aira was a bit worried about her mental state, but thinking that she wasn’t in much better condition herself, she only mentioned:

“Next time, it’s best to make some noise beforehand. Don’t hug first and then talk.”

Even if nothing happened, it still gave her quite a scare.

The Dragon Eagle soared into the sky, gliding toward the northern forest.

……

The three human girls walked forward, with more than a dozen young elves following closely behind.

On their way to find Elder Trinia, they first encountered another elder who was much older, with an aged face that was immediately apparent. If converted to human terms, describing him as well past his seventies would not be an exaggeration.

“This is Elder Laiteni, the eldest elder of the elven race,” Trika said proudly. “He has experienced many eras, including various major events from a thousand years ago.”

She meant that this elder was highly respected and deserving of reverence, so they should quickly pay their respects.

But the girls didn’t quite understand her meaning. From what she said, it seemed as if the older one was, the more worthy of pride they became.

An old person in the family is like a treasure? If that’s what she meant, then it was indeed reasonable.

“Elder Laiteni, hello,” Celeste said politely.

The old elder looked at them kindly: “Guests from the human race, hello to you too… Are you planning to find Trinia?”

“That’s right, but before that, I’d like to ask you about something,” Celeste inquired. “Regarding the Sacred Spring seal from a thousand years ago, what do you know about it? With more information, we can better provide help.”

She couldn’t let Aira work alone; she also had to find ways to gather intelligence and such.

Laiteni showed a troubled expression: “About this, I’m very sorry, but I promised the last survivor to remain silent about everything related to that matter.”

“Even when we’re currently facing a crisis?”

“Yes.”

His attitude was very firm, so the girls could only bid him farewell and continue forward.

Vina quickened her pace, jogging to Celeste’s side: “How strange. Considering his age, he should be more than 1,200 years old, so wouldn’t he also be one of the survivors?”

How could there be a “last survivor”? Could it be with various qualifying conditions added?

Who exactly was this so-called last survivor?

“I don’t know.”

Celeste answered this way not because she didn’t want to discuss it deeply with her companions, but because she saw Elder Trinia just ahead.

“You’ve finally arrived. Today there’s a task to assign to… should I say, to assign to them. If you want to watch over them, then come along for the trip,” Trinia said, looking at everyone. “Why are two people missing?”

“Elder Isadora had business with my companion,” Celeste said.

She only mentioned Aira’s whereabouts; they didn’t know where Zero had gone either.

A free person should be free.

“Isadora.” Trinia frowned, her expression not very pleased. “I originally thought she was like me, willing to pay any price for the future of our people, but I didn’t expect her to become weak so suddenly.”

Talking badly about a colleague behind her back, but she only said one sentence before moving on to arrange work.

Celeste listened for a while and got the general idea: the elven race had a group of people in very poor mental states who, for various reasons, had essentially given up. They were living numbly with dispirited minds, unresponsive to anything, in a stage of just waiting around to die.

Trinia wanted them to go to where these elves gathered to distribute flyers and conduct motivational propaganda. She didn’t expect to actually recruit many people, but just hoped to create some commotion to dispel the negative atmosphere and at least create some lively ambiance to avoid dampening the morale of other elves.

Having finally received an “important” task after returning home, Trika and the other young elves were excited, grabbing flyers and various equipment before rushing to the location.

Celeste, Vina, and Lia quickly followed.

After walking for about half an hour, the gathering place of the dejected appeared. The living conditions here were a bit worse than other places, mainly because the treehouses weren’t very good, but as a race that depended on nature, food and shelter were never a worry.

“Come and see, come and take a look!” Trika held a megaphone in one hand and flyers in the other, walking and shouting. “The demon race is launching a massive invasion of the northern border! The survival of our race depends on this battle! The fate of the forest is the responsibility of all spirits! Don’t remain in a daze any longer! All elven people, unite!”

“Unite! Fight!”

“Fight the demon race to the last drop of blood!”

They shouted with great passion, but no one paid attention. The occasional glances cast their way remained numb.

These elves had disheveled hair with almost no grooming, and their physical condition wasn’t ideal either.

There were exceptions, though. For instance, Celeste saw a male elf nearby who had come out looking for something. His physique couldn’t be called great, but at least he hadn’t been eating and drinking recklessly, and his hair had been cut, though very carelessly.

“May I ask how you ended up like this?”

The male elf didn’t even look at her but spoke anyway: “I no longer believe in love, and I feel that life has lost its meaning.”

“Why?”

“That was more than a hundred years ago. A big sister found me. She was gentle, knowledgeable, and had high status. I thought I had found love and had a child with her, the fruit of our love. But after having the child, she told me that there was actually no love at all. She was just using me to have a child, and everything was fake. She also said that she had found many people before me, but only I succeeded in the end…”

The male elf choked up as he spoke, his eyes full of pain, and his green hair became a few shades more vibrant.

“I never even saw the child once. How could she be so cruel, so heartless…”

“Hey, hey, hey, don’t tell outsiders everything!” Trika ran over from a distance and stuffed a stack of flyers into his hands. “You’re 800 or 900 years old, not some 100-year-old kid! Don’t spill everything just because someone asks a few questions!”

Not far away, Sylithea sneezed, feeling like someone was talking badly about her behind her back.

Trika had a strong sense of national pride, domestic shame shouldn’t be aired publicly. Don’t tell these evil humans such things, they’ll just laugh at us.

Returning to the group, Vina pulled at Celeste and said strangely: “This guy is 800 or 900 years old. More than a hundred years ago, he wasn’t exactly young either. The person he called ‘big sister’… could she really still be called a big sister?”

At that age, even among the long-lived elven race, he’d be considered part of the older generation, wouldn’t he?

Celeste shook her head, meaning it wasn’t good to comment on other people’s private affairs.

“Let’s help distribute the flyers,” she said.

The sooner they finished the work, the sooner they could go back.

……

In the northern forest, the war was raging.

After the first few days of skirmishes, the casualty ratio between both sides stabilized at about 1:5, with the demon race suffering the heavier losses.

This ratio was obviously somewhat unacceptable, so they no longer recklessly attacked in scattered groups. Instead, they concentrated their forces somewhat and built some camps in the occupied areas, preparing to plan large-scale operations.

Aira rode the Dragon Eagle gliding through the sky, carefully searching for traces of the Bloodslaughter Lord.

This mission wasn’t going smoothly. Not only had she failed to find the target, but the girl behind her kept asking loaded questions.

“Aira, when did you and Miss Lia start hugging each other naked?”
