Mental Illness Evolution Manual - Chapter 86
"And there you have it, folks! Another chapter conquered...or at least, not completely butchered. Please forgive any egregious errors; I blame the coffee (or lack thereof).
The five of them escaped back to their base, Black took care of the clean-up, deleting the surveillance footage. They’d had a close call.
They had originally just wanted to scout the area, but now they had alerted the church, so their subsequent plans had to be canceled.
But on the bright side, after this incident, the church would abandon this base and move. They wouldn’t stay here after their base was exposed.
But on the other hand, if they lost track of the church, how could they stop their subsequent actions?
On the way back, Lu Mingqiu decided to issue an order.
A full-scale attack on the church. They didn’t necessarily have to take down their base, the focus was on harassment. They had to make them overwhelmed, constantly on guard against attacks from the Resistance. If necessary, they could blow up the church and blame it on Azberto.
With his current reputation, he wouldn’t mind taking on a few more black pots.
“You go back to your respective branches and listen to orders from above,” Lu Mingqiu said, “Tell everyone to prioritize their own safety, don’t be reckless.”
The few of them agreed, they didn’t rest, they drove directly out of Shangyuan City.
“What about us?” Yan Xianchuan asked. She went to the bathroom to wash her hands, still feeling grimy from the car she’d thrown. She wasn’t sure what was on her, and frankly, preferred not to think about it.
She had already wiped her hands with wet wipes several times when she came back, but she still felt uncomfortable, so she went to the bathroom and washed her hands twice.
Lu Mingqiu sat down on the old sofa, opened her floating screen, and watched the latest news report.
The screen was filled with smoke and divided into countless small screens. Each one was a city currently under attack, filled with artillery fire and casualties.
Azberto had mobilized a legion, he had sent them to attack almost half of the cities separately. The residents of the city were fleeing madly, the rich were taking airships, the rest were driving, the highway was never empty.
The hospitals under the Resistance were operating at full capacity, there weren’t enough beds. To treat the injured, the hospital staff worked overtime every day, they didn’t have much time to rest.
The cities that had been hit by the mutated potion also needed a lot of personnel and supplies.
The potion was too toxic, and after the effect took hold, the people attacked each other, countless people were killed and injured, it could even be said that only one in ten survived.
It was too brutal.
After Yan Xianchuan asked this question, Lu Mingqiu didn’t answer her immediately.
What could they do?
What she wanted to do most now was to kill Azberto and end all this, but that was impossible.
The army was guarding him, she couldn’t get close to him.
Lu Mingqiu’s eyes darkened slightly, she said in a deep voice, “We’re going to blow up the church.”
In Yan Xianchuan’s suddenly bright eyes, she continued, “We’ll blow up the one in Nanjin City first.”
The church in Nanjin City had the most beautiful statue of the Mother Goddess Itaru, it could be said to be the landmark building of the Holy Healing Church. Blowing it up would definitely make the church overwhelmed, and it would also allow them to vent their anger.
Two birds with one stone.
“Yay!” Yan Xianchuan said, clapping her hands.
Yan Xianchuan had a lot of memories of Nanjin City. It hadn’t been that long, but a lot had happened during that time.
The second city she arrived at in this world was Nanjin City. Now, as she recalled the scenes from before, she felt a sense of mystery.
If someone had told her before that she would fall in love with someone, Yan Xianchuan would have thought that person was from a mental hospital and had forgotten to take their medicine.
She couldn’t imagine that there would be such a day.
Unbelievable.
But it wasn’t a bad thing.
Lu Mingqiu didn’t use her own face, but under this unfamiliar appearance, every blink, every subtle expression, had her own shadow.
The night was dark, the lights outside the window flickered, casting shadows on her face.
Yan Xianchuan didn’t know why, but she suddenly remembered her initial assessment of her, and she laughed.
Lu Mingqiu shifted her gaze slightly, “What’s wrong?”
“I used to give you a nickname,” Yan Xianchuan’s eyes sparkled with amusement, “I called you the Glass Princess.”
Lu Mingqiu: …
Lu Mingqiu: “It’s quite fitting.”
She didn’t show any anger or surprise, she nodded instead, “After all, I am a fragile omega.”
Yan Xianchuan exclaimed, “How can you say that?”
Lu Mingqiu smiled softly, her eyes curved, “Ah, what did I say wrong? I am an omega, that’s right.”
“But you’re not fragile at all,” Yan Xianchuan twisted her body, resting her elbow on the storage box in the middle of the seat, her two hands supporting her chin.
“Are we going to go home?”
“No, we’re not going back,” Lu Mingqiu shook her head, she turned the steering wheel and drove towards the Chang’le District where the church was located.
“We’ll rest here for a while, then we’ll go scout the area tomorrow. The base will send the explosives over.”
“Okay,” Yan Xianchuan never had any objections.
This was obviously another safe house prepared by the Resistance. It was hidden in plain sight, there were many people here, it was next to the commercial district, there was a lot of traffic, there were new faces coming and going every day, no one would pay attention to the two strangers.
A strange neighborhood, familiar homeless people. But because of the war, the atmosphere on the street was clearly not as relaxed. Almost everyone could be seen carrying guns, they were tucked into their waists.
Nanjin City was in the south, far from the war zone, but there was a sense of an impending storm.
Especially those who were idle, bounty hunters, gang members, they were clearly more nervous.
After all, everyone could see Azberto’s actions. The first people he killed were these people.
Malishan City.
After Azberto occupied the Federation’s office building, he had been resting here, he hadn’t gone anywhere else.
The TV was playing the news 24 hours a day. The handsome news anchor first introduced the current situation in the disaster areas, saying that the Federation government had sent people to the corresponding cities the next day, they had set up aid stations.
The screen showed a square-shaped open space, tents of the same size and style were lined up in rows, there were large pots of food being cooked, the steam was rising, it was just some simple home-cooked food, but at this moment, it represented the hope of life.
The people here were ordinary people who had inhaled the potion but didn’t have any special reactions. As for those who went crazy, they were all sent to the hospital for observation.
After introducing the situation in the disaster areas, the host said, “Recently, three small tycoon families have been attacked, all of them died, none survived.”
“According to the Investigation Department’s judgment, this was a premeditated murder, and it was a gang operation. The perpetrators were inhumane, they killed all the living people in their homes. The motive is still unknown.”
The news anchor looked serious and solemn, “The crime rate is continuing to rise. We hope that citizens will pay attention to their personal safety, try not to go out as much as possible, pay attention to the news, and be aware of the latest information.”
Then came some official rhetoric, such as the Federation wouldn’t abandon any of its people, it would do everything it could to protect everyone’s safety.
Azberto didn’t want to change channels. He seemed to be using the news broadcast as background noise, he didn’t even look at the TV, he just listened.
He was paying attention to the war.
Besides Malishan, the invading legions had successfully occupied two more cities. Those that hadn’t been occupied didn’t mean they were safe.
The legions that had gone to war were divided into two parts, one for a frontal attack, the other for infiltration, to clear out the underworld first.
To be more precise, the frontal attack was a smokescreen, the real main force was the part that was killing people in secret.
Azberto had just finished reading a report when his communicator rang.
There were very few people who could contact him directly. He turned his gaze and saw the name on the other side, it was someone from the church.
He answered the communication, a flash of light, a pale holographic projection appeared in front of him.
It was a man in a long red robe, his short hair was neatly combed, he was wearing a mask, only his black eyes were exposed, they were as calm as a well.
“Good afternoon, General Polov.”
His voice was as calm and composed as his person.
“Something wrong?” Azberto asked back, sitting in his chair without moving.
“Yes,” the bishop said, “I’m sorry, but we can’t continue to provide assistance with the mutated potion.”
“The Resistance has carried out a lot of harassment attacks on us, seriously interfering with our organization’s actions.”
“As compensation for our cooperation, we are willing to provide another 100,000 control chips. What do you think, General?”
Azberto didn’t speak for a while, then he said, “Okay, we’ll use the same method for the handover.”
“May the Mother Goddess bless you with success.” The bishop touched his forehead and nodded.
He hung up the communication, took off his robe, and picked up the suit jacket on the back of the chair. He pushed open the dark red wooden door, walked out of the study, and passed through the pavilions and corridors.
Along the way, servants met him and stopped, they called him “Master” and greeted him.
He arrived at the door of another room, he raised his hand and knocked three times. After a while, a voice came from inside, “Come in.”
He walked in and said respectfully, “Father, Azberto agreed to our request.”
The person on the other side was sitting in a chair, wearing gold-rimmed glasses. He said calmly, “Good.”
He picked up the teacup on the table and sipped slowly. Finally, he asked, “Do you know why I don’t agree to continue cooperating?”
“Appropriate suffering will maintain people’s servility, excessive suffering will arouse people’s rebellious spirit.”
“You’re very smart,” the person called “Father” put down his teacup and said in a gentle tone, “The new world that Azberto talks about is just a childish fantasy, it’s like a tree without roots, it can’t survive. Clear water has no fish, he doesn’t understand this.”
“Besides, if the new world really succeeds, it will be his dictatorship. Everything we’ve done will be in vain, we’ll be working for someone else, won’t we?”
“What we want is obedience, is dependence. The war started, and the number of believers doubled. You need to do a good job of providing shelter and assistance, don’t be stingy with money.”
“This son understands,” the standing man replied.
“Find an opportunity to notify the Resistance, tell them Azberto’s exact coordinates,” the father pushed his gold-rimmed glasses and said calmly, “His value has reached its limit.”
“Yes,” he bowed his head. Seeing that the other person had nothing else to say, he left and returned to his study. He gave the order he had just received.
Compared to the church, the Resistance wanted to deal with Azberto the most. Handing him over would shift their attention, attract firepower, and make the two opponents fight each other. Ideally, they would both be defeated, although the possibility was slim.
