Mental Illness Evolution Manual - Chapter 113

The Resistance’s idea was good, but with only a few hundred people, trying to shake the social hierarchy and change the fundamental mindset of the people was like a fool’s dream.
Some things can’t be achieved with just ideals and hope.
Human strength has its limits.
But luckily, they weren’t alone in the darkness, carrying a torch.
Diamond City, the capital, was a completely different sight from other cities.
It was a new city, unlike most cities today, which were remodeled on existing foundations, retaining some of the old features. For example, Yuecheng was full of ancient charm.
Diamond City was a modern metropolis that was chosen and built after the Federation’s political system was established. The initial reason was that the various powerful tycoons were unwilling to yield to each other. They didn’t want the new power structure to be located on someone else’s territory. They wanted the Federal government to be located in their own territory.
They fought over it for a long time, and finally, they all took a step back and chose a piece of land to build a new city.
They hired the famous architect, Professor Li Yue. He was a man with a bit of obsessive-compulsive disorder. He liked symmetry, he liked order, he wouldn’t allow a single speck of peculiarity.
But his aesthetic sense was excellent. Many of the architectural designs he had handled were full of neat beauty. Whether it was bustling or minimalist, he could handle many styles with ease.
Designing the capital was also a major event for him, adding luster to his life’s resume. He spent months polishing the design draft before finalizing it.
Diamond City, truly living up to its name, was like a dazzling diamond. There were many transparent, reflective glass panels, but due to the clever design of the angles, the light only converged upwards, making the entire city appear to glow from afar, dazzling and eye-catching.
The city’s streets were also meticulously planned, in a grid pattern. All sorts of buildings were enclosed within these squares. Because of the excessive symmetry, it exuded an indescribable sense of majesty.
There were no homeless people in Diamond City. Everyone who lived in this city had a job and an identity.
Lu Mingqiu sent the location of her residence to the person driving ahead. The latter had never been to the capital, but luckily, there was navigation, so they wouldn’t get lost.
When they arrived at their destination, everyone got out of the car and came to this residence, which was considered to be in the outskirts of the city. Judging from the cleanliness of the roads and the state of the passersby, it was similar to the middle-class district of other cities.
Everyone lived separately, scattered throughout this residential area.
Before getting out of the car, Lu Mingqiu instructed them, “Try not to go out recently.”
They all understood. There were no fools in the Resistance who couldn’t see the situation. They wouldn’t be running around causing trouble at this time.
Yan Xianchuan followed her, and the two of them entered a room together.
The furnishings in the room were nothing special. It had the feel of a common model home, lacking any personal touch.
As soon as they entered, Lu Mingqiu pushed her towards the bedroom and made her lie down on the bed to rest and recover.
Lu Mingqiu’s hand was already quite skilled at taking off her clothes. She pushed her while taking action. Before Yan Xianchuan could even react, her outer clothes had been stripped off.
When she was pushed onto the bed, she was only wearing a close-fitting undershirt.
Yan Xianchuan was stunned. Could she undress that fast?
The soft blanket was pulled up to her chest. Yan Xianchuan blinked, “I really am fine.”
She sat up and turned around, facing away from her. “Look, if you don’t believe me.”
Lu Mingqiu reached out and naturally lifted her clothes. The large bruises from a few hours ago were gone.
Her entire back was smooth, without any scars or injuries.
She placed her hand on it. Her palm could clearly feel the tight, warm skin beneath.
Yan Xianchuan could imagine the shape of that hand just by touch, not to mention that she had put it in her mouth and savored it.
Her lover was very bold and proactive in bed. Over time, she had also let go of her inhibitions. The reason she hadn’t taken off her clothes herself wasn’t because she was shy or embarrassed, but because she enjoyed the other person’s initiative.
It was as if they were controlling each other, a strange, intertwined dominance suggesting an incredibly intimate relationship.
Yan Xianchuan’s mind was filled with a few amorous thoughts, but she knew that this wasn’t the time to indulge. Lu Mingqiu put her clothes back down, and she sat up obediently, asking, “What should we do next?”
“Let’s wait for a while,” Lu Mingqiu said.
The Yan family had become particularly troublesome. If it had just been a tycoon, they could have slowly eroded them, and they would have succeeded eventually. It might not have been possible for others, but the current president wasn’t someone who could be easily fooled or manipulated. With her in charge, the tycoon families would be eliminated one by one. It was almost a certainty.
Perhaps that was why the Yan family had established such a behemoth as the church, to give themselves confidence and bargaining chips, to make the Federation hesitant to act.
Whether it was the mutated potion or the countless believers, they were all weapons that the Yan family could use. They were even more fearless than the Federation.
After all, the Yan family didn’t care about the lives of these people.
How to deal with the Yan family was a matter that needed careful consideration. They could only wait.
Many cities had been destroyed. For the people, it was a bad thing. But if you set aside the loss of life and only looked at the results, you couldn’t say it was all bad.
Azberto had chosen large cities. The mayors had a lot of power. Now that the power structure had been directly destroyed, it was a good opportunity for the president to take over, send her confidants, and rebuild an administrative team.
Although if the president had chosen to do it herself, she would never have used such radical methods to achieve her goals, they could only try to make things develop in a favorable direction.
Technology was now advanced, so reconstruction was fast. Although many people had died in this incident, humans were always able to endure hardship. The more desperate they were, the more potential they would unleash.
The president issued a new decree. People who were displaced and willing to participate in the reconstruction work, even if they were just workers, could be assigned a house and have their rent waived for three years.
Not all homeless people truly enjoyed living in poverty and misery.
Who wouldn’t yearn for a place to shelter from the wind and rain?
Even if they didn’t want a house, the workers’ wages were very high.
The Federation took this opportunity to seize the property of many small tycoons. After all, with so much chaos and human life so fragile, it was normal for someone to die accidentally.
Moreover, not to mention the small ones, just the Polov family’s property was enough to increase the national treasury’s balance by a lot.
This kind of subsidy wouldn’t cripple the finances.
The president wanted to swallow up all these cities and turn them into her own territory. She would never allow the old habits to return. The tycoons were gone, and everything needed to be rebuilt. What better time was there to establish new rules?
The wages issued by the Federation directly, without layers of exploitation or favors, were very substantial.
Many vagrant families were willing to find work for themselves. It was a good opportunity to register them and make them local residents.
Having a reliable job, not having to live in constant fear, being bullied by thugs, making a living by picking up trash and selling it, as long as they worked hard, they could eat three meals a day and have accommodation. For them, it was almost like paradise.
The Wild Bee vagrant family was one such family that stepped forward, went to the recruitment office to sign up, and said they were willing to work.
This small tribe-like family didn’t have many people. There were only a dozen or so people, including adults and children. But their mental state was pretty good, better than some vagrants.
The clothes they were wearing were old, but they were clean, not very dirty. The head of the family spoke. He was articulate and introduced each member of his family. He said that they could all work, they were tough, even the children who were just over ten years old, who couldn’t do physical labor, could do errands, help out in the cafeteria.
The person in charge of recruitment looked up at them. He saw them standing there, their expressions a little nervous, their eyes filled with anxiety. But they didn’t really believe it.
The recruitment requirements stated that people between the ages of thirteen and sixty-five could come for an interview. They would be paid different wages depending on the job, and their age wouldn’t affect it.
But in reality, younger and older people would be paid less. When asked why, the boss would give a watertight answer: “You’re too old/young, you can’t do much work, you don’t work as much as others, and you want the same money? You’re dreaming!”
This sounded reasonable, but it was just an excuse. Even if they did the same amount of work, or even more, they would still get less money. The boss would even use various methods to deduct their wages, and they could always come up with reasons to do so.
The head of the Wild Bee family had also been a worker. He knew the tricks of the trade, but this time, he still brought his children with him. He just thought, what if?
What if it was true? If they missed this opportunity, they would regret it for the rest of their lives.
He was nervous, but the person in charge just glanced at them, confirmed that their ages were fine, and gave each of them a form to fill out.
It was some basic information, name, age, gender, etc. Then he stamped it and said, “Go to the room over there and wait for half an hour. Someone will take you for a physical exam later.”
He pointed to the house on the right. There was a big sign on it that said—Waiting Area.
The head of the Wild Bee family was stunned for a moment, then he was overjoyed. He nodded several times and bowed before leading his family to the right.
As he walked, he was calculating in his mind. After the physical exam, they should be through. With so many people, even if they only got the minimum wage, it would still be a considerable amount of money.
It was a lot. With this money, they could have a better year.
The children walked behind. They had been wandering and suffering for many years. Although they were young, they were precocious. They were happy now, so they couldn’t help but ask, “Dad, are we going to live here?”
As soon as one person asked, the rest of them started chattering.
“I saw the notice. It said that the rent is waived for three years!”
“The houses here should all have heating, right?”
The head of the family heard the longing in their voices. He smiled, his face covered in stubble, “It seems so.”
“That’s great!”
The children all laughed, and the adults also smiled.
As they were laughing, someone suddenly said, “If only Xu Qiao could see this.”
As soon as these words were spoken, the lively atmosphere suddenly became a little gloomy.
The head of the family patted the child’s head, but he didn’t say anything.
After Xu Qiao became a guard for the Dongye family, everyone was genuinely happy for him.
He would send money back every month, and he would also send many clothes, learning materials, etc. With his help, the family was getting better and better.
But one day, he suddenly disappeared, and there was no news of him.
Xu Qiao wasn’t the kind of person who would abandon his family. He was always very sentimental. The fact that there was no news could only mean one thing, he was dead.
Then the rebellion happened, and now there were only these people left in the family.
Life was unpredictable, so they should cherish the days they were alive.
The head of the family looked at the ruined city. He sincerely hoped that he could become one of the residents here, live a better life, and no longer wander aimlessly.
