Mental Illness Evolution Manual - Chapter 107
"And there you have it, folks! Another chapter conquered...or at least, not completely butchered. Please forgive any egregious errors; I blame the coffee (or lack thereof).
Yan Xianchuan went out to cause trouble with great enthusiasm, without any attempt to hide.
Qi Ziyang’s changes were not something ordinary people could investigate, but Xie Wu and Xie Qi, who were in charge of Dingyang City, were certainly aware of it. The Yan family wasn’t a local power, but when it came to methods, ten local powers couldn’t compare to them.
It’s just that although they knew, they didn’t intend to intervene. The rise and fall of these other small families had nothing to do with the Yan family. In fact, if they fell, Xie Wu could collect a few more industries for the higher-ups.
It was Lu Mingqiu who said she didn’t need to hide her identity. Yan Xianchuan always blindly followed her decisions. When it was time to go out and play at night, she happily put on her gear. The mask on her face was her only tool for concealment.
She was having a blast in the West District. Xie Wu once came to report on his work. After he finished, he casually mentioned, “Miss Yan’s evening activities are quite lively.”
Yan Xianchuan glanced at him and asked back, “Can’t I go?”
“Of course not. I didn’t mean to restrict you.” Xie Wu smiled, “Your subordinate just wanted to ask, do you need to replenish your weapons and equipment? You’ve used quite a bit recently. If you’re missing anything, just let me know and I’ll send it to you immediately.”
“The stuff circulating over there isn’t very handy. It might not be convenient to use.”
That’s what he was getting at.
“No need,” Yan Xianchuan said, “It’s more immersive this way.”
“I apologize for my presumption.” Xie Wu bowed respectfully.
She watched the Yan family’s loyal servant leave the room and yawned boredly.
This guy came to say this mainly to express two things.
First, the Yan family’s control over Dingyang City, their collection of intelligence, was meticulous. He knew about Qi Ziyang, he knew she was running around every day, but he didn’t care. The Yan family’s children having some hobbies was harmless. He said he would provide weapons, which was a sign of his support.
Second, he was secretly conveying a message to her: You can play around, but keep it within limits, don’t go too far. Remember your identity and your position, remember the Yan family’s dignity, and also understand your own position. The two of them were the actual controllers of the Yan family here.
Yan Xianchuan understood his implication, which was why she felt bored. These subtle words that only the big families needed to carefully ponder were very uninteresting to her.
Social interaction is such a pain.
Lu Mingqiu could tell what was on her mind just by looking at her expression. She was good at reading people, and this person was transparent in front of her. She could guess what she was thinking.
She chuckled and went over to give her a quick kiss.
Yan Xianchuan: Social interaction is such a happy thing!!!
As the Qi family declined more and more, Qi Ziyang’s territory grew larger and larger, gradually forming a three-way standoff with the other two old powers. Yan Xianchuan was having the time of her life, but the deputy finally completed the catalysis and was ready to begin his revenge.
All the troops had been integrated and were now lurking in Lanfu Town. The deputy, along with a team of bodyguards, went to Yuecheng alone.
It wasn’t difficult to create fake identities for a dozen or so people, but it was very troublesome to give each of the many soldiers a new identity. It wasn’t necessary either. When Yuecheng became chaotic and everyone’s attention was drawn there, these people would have another mission.
They would attack the capital in a suicide attack.
The inspection in Yuecheng was very strict, but the deputy’s group used the identity of refugees, their records were clean, and they were quickly sent to the aid zone.
After a period of rest, the aid zone had become another large population gathering area in Yuecheng.
The head of the Yan family had integrated the poor people of Yuecheng with them. He had introduced new support policies, allowing the former to help the latter adapt to their new lives as quickly as possible, to get used to the days of being busy and working hard, and to give both sides additional subsidies.
This way, the refugees who came to seek refuge quickly integrated and fell in love with the peaceful life in Yuecheng.
Some of them still had some savings, so they rented storefronts and started small businesses. Their lives were thriving, and they were clearly settling into their new lives.
Laya’s family opened a fast food restaurant. Every day, the aroma of fried food would waft out for miles, tempting everyone’s taste buds.
Fast food tasted good and was convenient, so their business was very good.
Laya’s father had lost his life in the previous chaos, leaving only her and her mother. The family had been in this business before, so they weren’t unfamiliar with it.
When Laya’s mother first decided to return to her old business, she wasn’t without trepidation. After all, the aid zone was a refugee camp. She had seen the thugs burn, kill, and loot. But to earn her daughter’s tuition, she gritted her teeth and rented a storefront.
But to her surprise, the guards in Yuecheng were very responsible. They patrolled around the clock. Once a conflict occurred, they would clarify the cause and effect, and the party that had done wrong would immediately be kicked out of Yuecheng.
Some people also learned from the old ways of doing things, bribing the soldiers to turn a blind eye. But these people were directly criticized and reprimanded, and the gifts they had given were turned over to the victims.
Laya’s mother’s heart gradually settled. She had been running her shop here for a few weeks, and no one had come to rob her. She truly loved Yuecheng.
Laya was becoming more and more cheerful. She was a good student. She could definitely go to a regular public school. It was currently winter break. She had already signed up to take the entrance exam for the new semester. If she passed, she would officially become a part of the school.
There were three exams during winter break, three chances. She only needed to pass one.
This was also a policy enacted by the wise Mayor Yan, who said it was to give young people who wanted to go to school more chances to make mistakes.
Three exams, if she failed them all, then she couldn’t blame anyone else, she could only blame herself.
Laya studied her textbooks every day, occasionally helping to deliver food. She had become familiar with the neighbors.
One day, she came out of her house and ran into the shop. She gulped down a few mouthfuls of water before going to her mother and saying, “Mom, we seem to have new neighbors!”
They were among the first residents to come to Yuecheng. They had neighbors before, but they moved away later. They found jobs in the city, a little far from the aid zone, so they moved out. The money they saved on transportation could be used for rent, so it was a good trade.
“There are a lot of them, they’re tall and strong.”
Laya’s mother looked at her expression, “What, did you see a handsome guy?” She said as she flipped the fries in the oil pan, “Look at you, you’re so hopeless.”
“Oh! There is one that I kind of like.” Laya put her hands on her hips, “I just think he’s pretty good. Why would you call that hopeless?”
She was seventeen this year, the age when she liked to date. Laya’s mother wouldn’t restrict her, she even welcomed it.
“Then you go give him some food tonight. Use the excuse of neighbors getting to know each other. Chat with him a little. At least ask him if he has a girlfriend.”
“I know, Mom!” Laya said.
In the evening, it was peak ordering time. Laya happened to see an order from a nearby house. She was a very proactive person, so she took the order directly. She also took two pizzas and a bucket of fried chicken. After delivering them to the customer, she went back to the building where she lived, carrying a bunch of food. She knocked on the door next door.
The person inside opened the door after a while. It was the guy she liked, by chance. Laya’s eyes lit up. She said generously and without shyness, “Hi! Good evening. I’m your neighbor, my name is Laya. What’s your name?”
The person on the other side didn’t speak. He stared at her with a pair of brown eyes, very serious, very imposing.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m here to deliver you some food. Hahaha, you’re new here, you’re not familiar with the atmosphere in Yuecheng. It’s very friendly and welcoming!”
“Neighbors should get to know each other, right? My family happens to run a fast food restaurant. This is a welcome gift. Try it. My mom’s cooking is amazing!”
“I don’t know how many people live in your house. Is there enough to eat? I…”
Before she could finish, the guy looked at the fried chicken and coldly said, “I don’t eat.”
Then he closed the door directly.
With a bang.
It was a good thing Laya was standing far away. Otherwise, that force would probably have broken her nose.
That’s so cold!
Laya looked at herself in the fire hydrant. She was fine, right? She had tanned skin, a few freckles on her face, big eyes, and she was full of energy. She was quite confident in her looks. Although she wasn’t super beautiful, she was full of vitality and very attractive.
He didn’t even say a nice word to a girl like this?
Besides, she was his neighbor. She was kindly delivering food. Couldn’t he say a polite word, say thank you, say he appreciated it but didn’t want to eat? Was that so hard to say?
What a jerk, he’s so rude.
Laya wrinkled her nose, she was very unhappy. She went back to the shop and complained to her mother, saying that she really couldn’t fall for looks anymore.
Her mother could only stuff a chicken wing into her mouth, blocking her incessant chatter.
What she didn’t know was that after the guy closed the door, he reported to the people in the room in a straightforward manner, “It was a neighbor delivering a gift. No abnormalities.”
The latter nodded, “Get ready, act as soon as the time comes.”
The sooner the better. The longer they stayed in Yuecheng, the more likely something would go wrong.
In the middle of the night, a group of people came out of the room and scattered. Each of them carried a small bottle of blood. Their mission was to pour the blood into the water tanks.
They would directly contaminate the water supply in Yuecheng. No one would escape.
If it weren’t for the Yan family having their own water supply, not using the same water tank as the city residents, the deputy would have already instilled a self-destruction concept in this secret weapon, instead of having it destroy the Yan family.
There were only a few basic maintenance workers on the night shift at the water reservoir. They patrolled every two hours. Yuecheng was too peaceful. With the Yan family at the top, the people here had no sense of crisis. In their hearts, the Yan family could do anything. They didn’t even consider the possibility of an external enemy.
The patrolmen were also very lazy. The soldiers didn’t encounter any obstacles. They didn’t attract any attention. They simply mixed the vial of blood they were carrying with the water in the tank, completing their mission.
The few of them returned to the aid zone. They didn’t do anything the next day. The deputy patiently waited for a day.
People could go out for a day, but they couldn’t go without food for a day.
The deputy specially called his subordinate and told him to go buy fried chicken from Laya’s family. The previous incident of knocking on the door was just a small interlude. But where there are people, there is information flow. If there were rumors about new neighbors being strange or not fitting in, it would easily arouse suspicion. They were just one step away from being suspected. He didn’t want to attract any unnecessary attention.
His subordinate understood. He looked through the peephole and saw Laya going out. He deliberately followed her out of the house and started chatting with her. He said that his relative had just passed away, he hadn’t rested in a long time, and he wasn’t in a good mood. His tone was too bad, he hoped she wouldn’t mind.
He apologized very sincerely, and Laya understood. When her father had just passed away, she was also very depressed and didn’t want to talk to anyone.
He said, “I’m hungry, I want to eat something. Can I go to your shop?”
When he said this, Laya’s unhappiness from yesterday disappeared. Of course, she agreed and chatted with him enthusiastically.
When they got to the shop, the two of them were clearly much more familiar.
His subordinate took a few people’s worth of food back. Before leaving, he said goodbye to Laya.
Laya leaned on the counter and giggled. Her mother teased her, “Stop giggling like that. Don’t scare the customers away.”
Laya snorted, “We’re going to the music festival tomorrow!”
“Remember to come home early,” Laya’s mother said.
“I’ll definitely go home to sleep!” Laya said.
The day passed quickly. Laya fell asleep with her fantasies, while next door, the guy she had a crush on was guarding his superior, staring intently at the last vial of blood in the test tube.
The deputy held it over the fire and roasted it for a while. The thick blood, feeling uncomfortable from the heat, slowly climbed up the side of the tube.
“It’s time to get to work.”
