Chapter 9: Unexpected Good Fortune
***
Tang Xiaorou thought back and told Yu Chuyao who the male student was that Su Yingying had been intimately interacting with.
“Gu Tianyu.” If her memory was correct, this person should be Su Yingying’s first pursuer after entering university. The timing also matched her memories quite well, just after the start of school, she had noticed this new person around Su Yingying, competing with herself at that time.
This guy was apparently a young master from a local wealthy family in S City. His family was said to be very rich, owning some company, though Tang Xiaorou couldn’t remember the details.
After all, like herself, this person also seemed to be a failed victim who had been strung along.
Tsk, watching from the sidelines now that she had extracted herself from the situation was quite interesting.
Yu Chuyao also recalled this information from her memories. Since arriving in this story, she had memorized the character profiles and introductions she had glimpsed before. After all, this was the foundation for her survival in this story, one of the few things she actually knew!
Though she felt the naming style in this book was a bit outdated. Names like Su Yingying and Gu Tianyu sounded like protagonists from Mary Sue fiction from over a decade ago.
“But how do you know him?” Yu Chuyao suddenly realized that she and Tang Xiaorou had only been at school for two days. How could they know someone so quickly, whether they were a new or returning student?
Tang Xiaorou casually explained how she had learned about Gu Tianyu in her previous life: “Oh, this guy is quite famous among the second-year students at S University. Many girls are chasing him. If you scroll through short videos near our campus, you’ll see him.”
Oh, that made sense. The explanation was perfectly reasonable; otherwise, Yu Chuyao might have thought Tang Xiaorou had some kind of prophetic knowledge.
But a couple days ago, when they were sleeping at the hotel, Tang Xiaorou had mentioned something… hmm, she had been too tired to remember clearly.
Anyway, Yu Chuyao had treated it as a joke at the time, especially since it didn’t seem to align with the original story. She hadn’t taken it seriously and had attributed Tang Xiaorou’s transformation to her own arrival in the book.
Tang Xiaorou watched the pair on stage and thought about how in her previous life, she hadn’t known when these two had hooked up. Back then, during the first few days of school, she had been busy establishing connections to help Su Yingying around campus.
Now she could see that the other girl clearly didn’t care about her efforts and had already gone looking for a new backup.
Hah! What a perfect pair of scoundrels!
The two stood at the microphone, looking like they were about to perform a duet. The students below began to cheer them on. Especially after seeing Gu Tianyu, a campus celebrity, voluntarily bringing a beautiful girl on stage, clearly their relationship wasn’t so simple.
“Next, I’d like to invite a newly admitted freshman sister I just met to sing a song with me. I wonder if everyone would like that?”
He wasn’t the main singer here, but with his connections, he could still bring someone on stage for a musical interaction.
The students below shouted phrases like “we’d love to” and “looking forward to it,” and from this perspective, the two seemed somewhat compatible.
Tang Xiaorou looked on with disdain. Of course they’re compatible, she thought, a cheating woman and a philandering man, a match made in heaven.
They chose a popular ancient-style OST that was trending recently. The original story was very cliche, something about the most beautiful woman in the world falling in love with the one true god, full of love-hate dynamics and separations, with lines like “the entire world means nothing compared to you” and so on. Because of this, all the songs from these dramas were quite similar, various simple melodies expressing deep affection.
Su Yingying’s singing was only average, Tang Xiaorou knew this. Choosing this song was probably her limit.
Her performance wasn’t particularly good, but at least she managed to complete the song. With their good looks as a bonus, the pair received applause and cheers from their classmates, as if they were famous internet celebrities.
Gu Tianyu asked Su Yingying with a grin: “How about that, Yingying? I guarantee you’ll be famous among the freshmen now.”
Su Yingying smiled bashfully: “Oh, who wants to be so conspicuous among the freshmen~”
Gu Tianyu was apparently satisfied with this result and no longer occupied the main singer’s position. He led Su Yingying off the stage.
The two found a seat in a corner, enjoying everyone’s praise.
The main singer then reassembled his small band and continued the performance.
For these impromptu campus performances, there were basically no restrictions. Even if students requested songs, the performers could choose whether to sing them based on their own interests and abilities. Here, the main singer selected the very classic song 《Heart Wall》.
The young man sang it very well, certainly much better than Gu Tianyu and Su Yingying who had performed just to show off.
Probably to add atmosphere and fun, halfway through the song, he took the microphone and stepped down from the stage, standing among the students for some interaction.
From a distance, he spotted Tang Xiaorou and Yu Chuyao sitting at the outer edge. Following his personal inclination, he walked over and suddenly held the microphone out to them while still singing.
Originally, Tang Xiaorou and Yu Chuyao had been chatting along with the music’s melody. This sudden “turn of events” startled them, and they hadn’t yet reacted to what was happening.
Tang Xiaorou, being quicker to respond, immediately picked up the melody that was halfway through.
“Wooh, the first time I met you, clouds covered your profile, what story lies there, I’d like to know, I feel I understand what makes you special.”
To avoid stealing the spotlight, she sang just these few lines of the chorus, then nudged Yu Chuyao with her elbow, encouraging her to move closer to the microphone. Yu Chuyao finally realized, was he asking her to sing a few lines too?
Oh no, she wasn’t sure if her singing was any good.
But the main singer showed no intention of taking the microphone back, so Yu Chuyao had to steel herself and go for it. Conveniently, Tang Xiaorou had left her half a line.
“Your heart has a wall, but I’ve found a window, occasionally letting out a warm glow. Even if you have a wall, my love will climb up to the windowsill and bloom, open the window and you’ll see sorrow melt away.”
After their brief thirty-second melody, when the main singer took back the microphone, the whole crowd was amazed by their performance.
If nothing else, the quality was much better than Gu Tianyu and Su Yingying’s earlier performance.
“Wow, are these freshman girls? They’re so pretty.”
“Beautiful people with sweet voices, they’re too cute!”
“Aww, did you see how they glanced at each other while singing? So sweet~”
Yu Chuyao clearly hadn’t expected to be put in this position and quickly moved closer to Tang Xiaorou. Tang Xiaorou calmly accepted everyone’s attention, although she hadn’t intended to stand out, anything that could overshadow Su Yingying was a good thing.
Indeed, when Su Yingying saw that the two were also at the event and had even outshone her with the main singer’s intentional or unintentional help, she nearly ground her back teeth to powder.
This person was so annoying, why did he have to help Tang Xiaorou?
