Chapter 9: Let Me Treat You to a Meal
***
10 minutes later, at a small roadside stall covered with plastic sheets, Yu Chuyao and Tang Xiaorou sat facing each other, with steaming bowls of rice noodles placed on the table in front of them.
“Here, eat up.” Tang Xiaorou gestured to Yu Chuyao not to be polite.
Yu Chuyao knew it wasn’t good to let others treat her, but she discovered that all her money was in her school meal card, leaving her without any funds outside the school gates.
She could only trouble Tang Xiaorou.
“I’m sorry, I’ll definitely treat you to a meal to make up for it later.” Yu Chuyao pressed her palms together in gratitude, then picked up her chopsticks and began eating.
Tang Xiaorou wasn’t hungry herself, she just wanted to treat Yu Chuyao to a meal, but sitting here alone would be awkward, so she ordered a portion for herself too.
As for Yu Chuyao’s promise to treat her to a meal, she took it as mere courteous words of gratitude from the girl, after all, she knew very well about the current situation of the girl’s family.
There were quite a few people out having late-night snacks at this hour, and among all the adults, the two girls in school uniforms particularly stood out.
Yu Chuyao ate with great enjoyment, after all, before transmigrating into the book, her family’s circumstances were also ordinary, and she wasn’t picky about food, as long as the taste wasn’t strange, she could eat it.
She didn’t eat the bowl of rice noodles quickly, not because she could pretend to be a lady chewing slowly, but because it was really too hot, forcing her to take small bites slowly.
But in Tang Xiaorou’s eyes, this became the image of a girl being careful and obedient, and because the steam blowing on her forehead was too stuffy, Yu Chuyao specifically found a hairpin to clip up her bangs, revealing her usually hidden face.
At that moment, a feeling of being healed filled Tang Xiaorou’s thoughts.
How nice, if it weren’t for her childhood experience making her firmly set on Su Yingying, if she had met the gentle and beautiful Yu Chuyao earlier, perhaps she wouldn’t have had such a tragic life in her previous life.
Not only did she harm herself, but she also caused many people around her to be affected.
Yu Chuyao’s concentrated appearance while eating made Tang Xiaorou somewhat entranced, unconsciously stopping the movement of the chopsticks in her hand.
As the emptiness in her stomach was gradually filled and her body warmed up, Yu Chuyao also noticed that the person in front of her had fallen silent, and quickly looked up to find the other person just staring at her with a smile.
“Classmate Tang, what’s wrong? Aren’t you going to eat?” Don’t waste food! Although she couldn’t help her finish more either.
“Oh, oh, I saw it was too hot, no hurry.” Tang Xiaorou finally realized she had somewhat lost her composure, better be a bit more reserved, otherwise that bare naked gaze would make any girl uncomfortable when they saw it.
“Mm-hmm, let’s hurry up then, go back and rest early after eating, we still have classes tomorrow.”
Yu Chuyao continued eating after speaking, taking bite after bite without stopping, making Tang Xiaorou, who wasn’t hungry originally, feel a bit hungry too, so she simply finished the rice noodles in front of her as well.
Of course, when it came to the final payment and settling the bill, it had to be Tang Xiaorou. Earlier on the road, she had secretly glimpsed Yu Chuyao’s phone, and the balance on the apps… well… was all zero.
Poor thing, she’ll have to help her properly in the future, otherwise it wouldn’t be good if her future wife’s body developed health problems.
“Give me your phone.” On the way back, Tang Xiaorou reached out to ask for Yu Chuyao’s phone, which made Yu Chuyao, who hadn’t understood Tang Xiaorou’s purpose, become somewhat vigilant, her small hand gripping the phone tighter.
“What for!” Yu Chuyao frowned, worried that the other person wanted to look at secret things in her phone.
Although she didn’t know what exactly there was anyway.
Speaking of strange things, even though she had transmigrated into a book, things like her phone password and chat app passwords were exactly the same as what she commonly used in her previous life. Could it be that this was deliberately optimized after transmigrating?
Never mind, as long as it’s convenient for her, that’s fine. She has to live here from now on, can’t be unable to do anything.
“Of course it’s to look at your home address and take you back home.” Tang Xiaorou scratched her head, she didn’t have any strange habit of wanting to look at Yu Chuyao’s phone messages, she just wanted to send her back early, otherwise judging by the latter’s earlier behavior, she probably wouldn’t make it home even by dawn tomorrow.
Ah, indeed a harmless nobody, really getting more and more cute the more she thinks about it.
“Oh, oh, okay then.”
Many old schools now relocate to new campuses in the urban outskirts, which consequently drives the development of surrounding school district housing and supporting facilities.
Tang Xiaorou’s home was like this, basically just a 10 to 20-minute journey.
But in the county town, there was also a part of the area that was originally a small village on the city’s edge, with old housing facilities and poor environmental conditions. Because the county town was relatively small, there were no demolition and reconstruction plans, so it was left behind.
Thus, surrounded by the prosperity of the city center and suburbs, it stood out awkwardly, somewhat embarrassingly.
This also explains why Yu Chuyao didn’t know the way, she never thought her current home would be in this area.
The narrow and crowded alleyways between houses were packed with various electric bikes and tricycles, with charging cables stretching everywhere, making one dizzy at first glance.
Tang Xiaorou knew the little one’s family conditions weren’t good, but she didn’t expect it to be like this. She pondered in her heart whether she should help Yu Chuyao more at school in the future, otherwise how could she let her wife suffer when they weren’t together yet.
On the other hand, as someone who had returned from rebirth, she also knew that Yu Chuyao would have opportunities to change her life in the future, but she wasn’t clear about exactly how these opportunities would come about.
Damn it, in her previous life she was too busy pursuing Su Yingying, there were many other things she didn’t know about.
So now she had to approach from the perspective of change, using her own actions to alter the timing of these opportunities.
Yu Chuyao was accepting things quite quickly on her end. Although the conditions weren’t very good, at least it wasn’t some otherworld reincarnation with hell difficulty start, she could live steadily and have plenty of time to make changes in the future.
She just didn’t know how well she would get along with her current parents.
“Well then, delivered you home, Classmate Yu.”
“Mm, thank you, Classmate Tang.” From treating her to bubble tea at the school gate to buying her dinner, then sending her back, it had been almost an hour, and Yu Chuyao’s view of this villainess from the book had somewhat changed. Even if there were ulterior motives, at least she could put on a decent show of attentiveness.
“It’s nothing, we’re friends from now on, isn’t helping each other what we should do?” Tang Xiaorou patted her shoulder, preparing to say goodbye and leave.
Friends was just temporary, she must quickly add another word in front of these two characters!
Watching Tang Xiaorou’s retreating figure, Yu Chuyao breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, after transmigrating into the book, it was the first time she had left the main characters’ sight, the rest shouldn’t need to be so nerve-wracking anymore, right?
With this mindset, she took out the old key from her clothes pocket and opened the front door of her home.
