Chapter 67: Physical Examination
***
Physical examinations were conducted in batches, otherwise hundreds or thousands of students from the entire school rushing to the hospital at once would overcrowd the place. Moreover, their facilities probably couldn’t support that many people at once, so generally several classes would go together.
Because Yu Chuyao’s class was relatively late in the sequence, their turn didn’t come until Sunday noon.
Since blood drawing was part of the examination, they needed to fast for a period beforehand, so many people hadn’t eaten since early morning, enduring until now.
It felt somewhat numbing, because of the high school lifestyle routine, most students had formed habits around the three meal times of morning, noon, and evening. Basically, they didn’t need the bell to ring; when their stomachs growled, they knew it was time to rush out and grab food.
Therefore, going half a day without food was difficult even for physically strong people to endure, let alone those with average constitution.
Yu Chuyao was one of them.
The hospital selected for the high school physical examination was a rather old hospital in Q City. In the past, it had been the People’s Hospital, but with urban development and the shift of the city center, this old and cramped environment was obviously no longer suitable as the location for the People’s Hospital. Therefore, at the diagonal intersection across from their school gate, there was a newly built People’s Hospital, with an area almost comparable to their school.
And this discarded place was converted into a Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital.
From school to the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital required crossing the entire Q City district. Although Q City wasn’t large, it still took 20-30 minutes to get there. Plus, with so many students, the school didn’t organize group transportation, instead letting students make their own way there and meet up.
“When can we eat…” Yu Chuyao leaned on Tang Xiaorou’s shoulder, saying painfully.
You could make her skip one meal, she might be able to endure it for three or four hours at most. But not eating from waking up until now, wasn’t that life-threatening? Her small frame needed nutritional supplements right now, and going without one meal made her terribly hungry.
“Alright, alright, after the examination, no, after the blood draw, I’ll give you something to eat.” Tang Xiaorou was doing better; although she was also a bit hungry, it hadn’t reached the point of painful stomach cramping.
They had taken a taxi there; if they had cycled, Yu Chuyao probably would have collapsed by the roadside halfway there.
“Do you have any candy?” Yu Chuyao felt she was getting low blood sugar. When they left school earlier, her steps were unsteady, swaying as if about to fall. If Tang Xiaorou hadn’t been supporting her, she would have collapsed.
“I do have some.” Tang Xiaorou always kept snacks in her pocket, all stuffed there by Mrs. Tang. They were meant for her and Yu Chuyao, convenient for feeding Yu Chuyao anytime.
“But it’s not allowed, eating candy counts as food intake, blood drawing is very particular, you can’t even drink water.”
No wonder everyone’s faces looked so terrible during break time, they weren’t even allowed to drink water.
“So why doesn’t the school schedule all physical examinations in the morning? Having examinations in the afternoon is too torturous.” Yu Chuyao couldn’t help but criticize this repeatedly frustrating school.
“Isn’t this just to compress our rest time?” Tang Xiaorou was also helpless, after all, it was a school entirely focused on certain aspects, and some places even needed to be “innovative.”
Only the students suffered for it.
Not everyone could take a taxi, so Yu Chuyao and Tang Xiaorou arrived quite early, barely seeing any other students in school uniforms.
“We probably go there first, after testing vision and hearing and such, then go over here… take a chest X-ray and such, and finally over there.” As they walked towards the hospital’s back courtyard, Tang Xiaorou introduced the upcoming procedure to Yu Chuyao.
But this made Yu Chuyao suspicious.
“How are you so familiar with this? Didn’t they say which test to do first depends on the crowd situation? You seem to know everything?” She heard Tang Xiaorou explain so systematically and precisely, it seemed very real.
Or perhaps… it was real?
“Huh?” Tang Xiaorou froze for a moment, then realized and wanted to slap herself. Explaining was one thing, but how did she habitually reveal everything to Yu Chuyao?
Wasn’t this somewhat exposing the fact of her reincarnation experience?
“Oh, some senior students told me about it before, I’m just introducing it based on what they said.” Tang Xiaorou quickly covered up: “Besides, it’s already the second day, many people were talking about this yesterday.”
She shouldn’t be suspected, right? After all, it was just that she had good memory and could recall everything upon seeing the scene. If it were another reincarnated person, they probably couldn’t remember a single detail.
From the hospital entrance to the back parking lot, though it was only 100-200 meters, the walk made Yu Chuyao dizzy and her vision blurry, almost going dark. It wasn’t her fault for having a delicate constitution; her body was already weak, and not eating for most of the day, getting low blood sugar was the mildest consequence.
Quickly finding a hospital bench to sit down, Tang Xiaorou let Yu Chuyao rest her head on her lap, quietly waiting for other classmates to arrive.
The two were just waiting there briefly, but they didn’t notice the white-clad woman who passed by, took a few steps forward, then immediately stepped back.
“Yaoyao?”
The woman’s voice was very familiar, and both of them immediately looked up upon hearing it.
“Mom?” Yu Chuyao hadn’t expected to see her mother here, especially in medical staff work attire, so she perked up a bit: “Why is Mom here?”
“Silly Yaoyao, of course Mom works here.” Mrs. Yu quickly crouched down, looking at Yu Chuyao lying on the bench, and noticing her poor complexion, became worried: “Why do you look so unwell?”
“Auntie, we have our college entrance physical examination today.” Tang Xiaorou added an explanation for Mrs. Yu at this point: “We need to fast for the blood draw.”
“So you haven’t eaten since last night until now!” Mrs. Yu was shocked, looking at Yu Chuyao’s face with concern: “Yaoyao, hang in there a bit longer, Mom’s not in charge of your examinations, I can’t help you.”
Besides, Mrs. Yu’s position was quite ordinary, she had no authority to arrange anything.
“It’s okay, Mom, I can endure a bit longer.” Yu Chuyao certainly wasn’t the type to be easily defeated, after all, she was someone who had transmigrated into a book, she had to be a bit stronger!
Because people nowadays mostly went to the larger, better-equipped new People’s Hospital for treatment, the workload at this Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital wasn’t so heavy. Mrs. Yu’s work today was just being on duty, so she had some time to look after Yu Chuyao.
Finally, when they saw classmates gradually arriving to gather, Tang Xiaorou and Yu Chuyao felt relieved.
