Chapter 65: Making a Scene
***
Fundamentally, Yu Chuyao’s behavior wasn’t really sabotage, just an unconscious modification.
Of course, this draft wasn’t directly used in the end. The teacher in charge felt it was too troublesome to let students handle it themselves, so they collected everyone’s drafts and planned to show them to the head of the Chinese department for final approval.
“Then what was the point of us writing here for so long?” Yu Chuyao expressed her confusion.
Tang Xiaorou was also very frustrated, as the content she wrote in her previous life had no issues, so why did it need to be revised this time?
She really couldn’t understand.
Later, they were called to the viewing stands on the sports field. Between the two tiered stands was a large platform where the principal and other leaders usually sat during large meetings, and where awards were presented.
According to Tang Xiaorou, they would climb up from both sides and stand at the front of the platform, then take an oath in front of the entire grade level.
This had actually been done once during the hundred-day countdown review, so the procedure was fixed, just with different content for the oath.
Just as they entered the sports field area and heard 《Ni Zhan》 playing on the broadcast, Yu Chuyao almost couldn’t hold back her laughter.
Who chose this song? Although it was a game promotional song and there was nothing wrong with it inherently, it couldn’t overcome how internet discourse had fermented it into becoming that era’s elementary school anthem.
“You mean we have to sing this song together too?” Yu Chuyao repeated her question to Tang Xiaorou, hoping she had heard wrong.
“Yes, you heard correctly.” Tang Xiaorou’s response was definitive, how could she possibly remember this wrong? Normally, each class would have an inspiring song to sing together before the college entrance exam for encouragement, but who would have thought that for such a formal mobilization assembly, they would choose this song for everyone to sing?
Yu Chuyao helplessly held her head. Although she liked both the song and the singer, having the entire grade sing this song together felt a bit strange.
Arriving at the gathering area backstage, they saw that Su Yingying and Xie Jin had already arrived.
“You’re going on stage but you didn’t even bother to dress up,” Xie Jin remarked with a laugh when he saw the two.
Yu Chuyao and Tang Xiaorou exchanged glances. Although they were both wearing school uniforms and hadn’t done any makeup or styling at school, they at least kept themselves clean and tidy every day, how was that not being presentable?
Then they looked them over and realized that their idea of “dressing up” meant styling their hair, and Su Yingying had even applied light makeup.
She looks so pretty, you can barely tell she’s wearing makeup from a distance!
Whether it was from spending more time around Su Yingying or not, Yu Chuyao noticed that Xie Jin increasingly showed a tendency to act as Su Yingying’s shield and speak up for her.
So this was the female lead’s passive ability: always having someone step up to protect her?
“As high school students, we should prioritize studying, especially in the third year. Rather than spending time on makeup, we could memorize a few more facts.”
“You!”
What’s going on? Why does this person keep giving her openings for criticism?
Tang Xiaorou also helplessly shrugged her shoulders, she wouldn’t start trouble unprovoked.
“Let’s wait and see how everyone performs on stage!” Xie Jin knew arguing with Tang Xiaorou would lead nowhere: “The teacher also said that if someone’s not up to it, they might be replaced.”
He was referring to Yu Chuyao, of course. Everyone knew Yu Chuyao was a nobody who hadn’t experienced big occasions. They thought she would be nervous and afraid even during rehearsal, and definitely wouldn’t perform well.
When they actually received the script, Yu Chuyao’s vision went dark.
Why did she get assigned so many parts? And why weren’t they given the scripts earlier, only receiving the final version now during rehearsal?
This world really was just one big amateur operation!
Originally the oath was supposed to take a few minutes, and Tang Xiaorou had written quite a long passage at the time. Unexpectedly, it was kept in the final version.
Besides their original role of leading the oath on stage, there were also teachers and students going up to speak. Running through the entire procedure took nearly an hour.
Backstage, Yu Chuyao kept reviewing the script several times in a corner. They would have to recite it from memory later, and since her memory wasn’t very good, this was undoubtedly another big challenge.
At least this was just rehearsal, so they could hold the script when going up. Otherwise, she’d be so nervous she might not be able to say a single word.
The oath was the final segment, and after waiting for so long, they were finally called by name to go on stage.
Five people came up from both sides, with Yu Chuyao alongside Tang Xiaorou. When they went up, they faced Su Yingying. From their perspective, she looked exactly like a proud swan raising its head, as if walking on some red carpet.
Was there really a need to be so formal?
However, before Yu Chuyao and Tang Xiaorou could make any sarcastic remarks, the teacher in charge of the overall assembly rhythm spoke up.
“Who’s that? The one with the high ponytail.”
Yu Chuyao usually wore her hair down, and Tang Xiaorou sometimes just tied it simply, so the teacher could only be referring to Su Yingying.
“You’re going on stage to take an oath, not receive an award, your nose is practically pointing at the sky.” The teacher frowned, glancing at their names: “What’s your name again?”
Su Yingying felt somewhat defiant and responded quite righteously: “Su Yingying!”
Su Yingying… The teacher looked at the information each person represented and became even more puzzled: “Aren’t you the representative for academic improvement? And why are there two female students?”
Thinking about this, especially since Su Yingying’s name was supposed to be last, the teacher suddenly realized something: “So why are you acting so proud? Even Tang Xiaorou next to you isn’t that conspicuous!”
“I…” Su Yingying was left speechless by this rebuke.
The teacher finally sighed and shook their head, clearly expressing dissatisfaction with Su Yingying.
“Pfft.”
At this moment no one was speaking, so a sudden light laugh became particularly noticeable. Upon careful listening, they realized that the laugh had come from Yu Chuyao in the middle.
“Sorry, couldn’t help it.” It was really hard to hold back, okay? She had thought Su Yingying would be so impressive, but just by simply going on stage, she was already being scolded by the teacher.
“Don’t be like that, Classmate Chuyao.” Tang Xiaorou took this opportunity to twist the knife, delivering a powerful blow to Xie Jin and Su Yingying: “We need to perform well, or we might end up holding people back again.”
Really don’t know how those two could say they were waiting to see the performance.
As for this kind of seemingly offensive praise, it undoubtedly added another slap to their already unpleasant faces.
