Chapter 58: Sleeping Together Under the Same Blanket, A Night of Heart-to-Heart Talk
***
“Do you know why I used to like Su Yingying?”
Originally, Yu Chuyao was still struggling not to let Tang Xiaorou lean against her, but when Tang Xiaorou, who was holding her, suddenly spoke up, her attempts to break free immediately stopped.
This was the first time she could hear Tang Xiaorou voluntarily talk about Su Yingying, and she was curious about what Tang Xiaorou wanted to say.
Moreover, since Tang Xiaorou could voluntarily share this secret, it must be her way of opening up to her, right?
“The necklace I gave you,” Tang Xiaorou said slowly, “you’re still wearing it, right?”
“Mm.” Yu Chuyao instinctively touched the necklace on her neck.
“Actually, the story happened quite a while ago, when I was still little, so my memory isn’t very clear now,” Tang Xiaorou seemed melancholic, showing that the past events truly had a significant impact on her, otherwise she wouldn’t have such a reaction.
“It happened more than 10 years ago, I think it was before elementary school, during New Year when we had to go back to the countryside to visit grandpa and grandma.” Tang Xiaorou smiled while speaking, showing that the memories were still somewhat pleasant: “Then we had to visit relatives, and because each family lived quite far apart, we had to stay for lunch.”
“I had short hair at that time, it was really fun, wearing winter clothes made me look like a tomboy. It was snowing heavily, and when we first arrived at second aunt’s house, I saw a small snow-covered slope that looked really slippery, so after lunch I snuck out.”
Up to this point, everything seemed normal, sounding like a very ordinary story.
“As I played, I lost track of time. It was already snowing, and the slope became harder to control from all the sliding, but I was stubborn back then, even when my hands went numb, I kept playing.” At this point, Tang Xiaorou couldn’t help but laugh at herself: “In the middle of winter, in the snow, I was the only one outside, so I easily caught ‘someone’s’ attention.”
Hearing about catching attention, Yu Chuyao’s heart trembled, and she quickly understood what she meant.
Even nowadays, let alone in that era, there were still child traffickers wandering in small county towns and countryside that couldn’t be completely eliminated, not to mention more than 10 years ago when society was even more backward.
She couldn’t imagine what situation Tang Xiaorou was in at that time.
“But I was very lucky, a little girl passed by at that time.” Tang Xiaorou touched her nose, saying embarrassedly: “Anyway, she called for help to stop me, and in the chaos, the bad people were driven away, and I was eventually carried away by adults from her family.”
“However, this thing fell from the girl’s body at that time, so I kept it ever since.”
As she spoke, Tang Xiaorou reached out to touch the necklace on Yu Chuyao’s neck.
So that’s how it was? In other words, Tang Xiaorou was grateful to the girl who inadvertently saved her, so she kept this thing until now, and then when she met Su Yingying in high school, maybe she saw something on her that made her believe Su Yingying was the person she had been thinking about all along?
The story was quite melodramatic, fitting those illogical plot settings in feel-good novels. It seemed to make some sense at first glance, but when carefully analyzed, various details worth criticizing could be found.
Well, there’s nothing to be done, this was how the original book was set up, and her criticism couldn’t change that.
One could only say that the original author must have been drunk or desperate to write such a setting.
“So you’ve been…” liking girls since then?
Yu Chuyao didn’t finish the second half of the sentence. Tang Xiaorou’s preference for girls and pursuit of Su Yingying was no secret in the whole school, but she still wanted to leave her some face.
“Yes.” Tang Xiaorou wasn’t embarrassed to admit it: “The girl was wearing a floral hat and bright-colored jacket at the time, looking especially cute!”
“It’s just that too much time has passed, and I was quite young, so I gradually forgot what she looked like then.”
But that seed was still planted in her heart, slowly sprouting as time passed.
This explained why Tang Xiaorou didn’t like Su Yingying anymore, right? Maybe she realized she had mistaken the person, that Su Yingying wasn’t actually the girl from back then? Yu Chuyao suddenly understood, but another question that followed left her confused.
Since in the original book, Tang Xiaorou still targeted others because of Su Yingying later on, it meant she didn’t know about this even later.
So how did the current Tang Xiaorou know about it? After all this, she still hadn’t figured out why Tang Xiaorou took a liking to her.
Sigh, this fabricated story was truly a tangled mess.
Maybe it was because it was already very late, or perhaps storytelling was indeed sleep-inducing. Yu Chuyao and Tang Xiaorou both yawned simultaneously, their conversation frequency becoming less and less, until finally, neither knew who stopped first, and they both entered dreamland.
That night, Yu Chuyao didn’t sleep particularly comfortably. When she woke up, her mental state was quite good, and a dreamless night cleared away the drowsiness from recent early mornings. But her body felt somewhat uncomfortable because Tang Xiaorou really wasn’t well-behaved in her sleep, always trying to hold her like a pillow, until finally she had no choice but to give up resisting.
Fortunately, Tang Xiaorou wasn’t lazy when they woke up, otherwise with her small frame, it would have been difficult to pry Tang Xiaorou away without waking her.
When the two got up, they found Mrs. Yu already making breakfast in the kitchen. They had returned really late last night, and besides, Yu Chuyao and Tang Xiaorou had to go to school, so how could they let them cook?
“Awake? Quickly go wash up and change clothes? Then eat your breakfast.” Seeing the two standing in the living room, Mrs. Yu smiled and called out.
Perhaps due to different habits, every time after Yu Chuyao finished washing up carelessly, her mother would come over to help her fix her clothes and sticking-up hair.
“Look at you, forgot to wet your hair to flatten it again.” Mrs. Yu smiled and pulled Yu Chuyao over, positioning her in front of herself, taking up a comb to groom her.
“Yu Chuyao’s hair is actually very soft, why does it still need to be wetted to be combed down?” Tang Xiaorou said while eating breakfast, seeing this scene.
But this casual comment made Mrs. Yu’s hand pause for a moment, and when she met the gaze of Yu Chuyao, who had also looked up curiously, she quickly added: “Yaoyao’s hair texture is good, even mom is envious of it.”
Yu Chuyao had no reaction to this, purely following the conversation in thought. Instead, Tang Xiaorou, sitting to the side, narrowed her eyes after hearing this, as if detecting some subtle clues.
This could only be counted as a small detail in life, but she felt things weren’t that simple.
In fact, if one were to reason a bit, it could even mutually confirm her speculation from last night.
The deeper she delved, the more she felt things weren’t so simple.
