Chapter 54: Showing Culinary Skills
***
“Are you sure you’re not joking?”
Yu Chuyao asked very seriously, because Tang Xiaorou’s words were really easy to misunderstand.
“Oh, I misspoke. I meant I’m going to hang out at your place today, and we’ll go to school together tomorrow,” Tang Xiaorou explained her heartfelt words that she had casually let slip.
That’s more like it.
In the evening, after packing up her things, Mrs. Tang held Tang Xiaorou back before letting her leave, giving her a bag of items.
“What’s this?” Yu Chuyao asked curiously when she saw Tang Xiaorou walking with her carrying the bag.
“Some snacks I brought for you,” Tang Xiaorou answered honestly.
But when she usually helped out at their place, Mrs. Tang would occasionally feed her some snacks, and with all those snacks in the house, it was as if they were afraid Yu Chuyao wouldn’t dare to eat them.
While most people worry about employees stealing food, Mrs. Tang was the opposite — it seemed like she’d be uncomfortable if Yu Chuyao didn’t eat.
Tang Xiaorou certainly knew about this situation. Mrs. Tang naturally wanted Yu Chuyao, who came from a less privileged background, to try more delicious snacks. After all, which young person doesn’t like tasty snacks?
Moreover, she knew that Tang Xiaorou genuinely liked Yu Chuyao, so naturally, she treated her like her own child’s partner. Yu Chuyao looked so thin and frail, how could she not eat more?
Although she had been to Yu Chuyao’s house entrance very early on, unlike last time when she only dropped her off at the door, this time Tang Xiaorou stood at the entrance, feeling a bit nervous about going up.
Of course, this nervousness was different from the homesickness she felt when she first returned to life to see her parents. This was more like the nervousness of meeting in-laws, afraid that she might get kicked out once she went in.
After all, while Yu Chuyao might be too naive to notice her intentions (actually, she really could!), as parents, they definitely wouldn’t simply think of them as friends or best friends just because she was a girl.
She was also a daughter at home, so she understood parents’ protectiveness towards their daughters. They would freak out if their daughter suddenly brought home some unknown boy, let alone a girl who had feelings for their daughter!
“Mom?” As usual, she called out when opening the door, checking if Mrs. Yu was home.
There was no response, meaning Mrs. Yu wasn’t home. As for Mr. Yu, there was no need to mention him — he probably hadn’t returned at this hour.
Yu Chuyao didn’t know what he was busy with outside. He had been away on business trips for so long, logically he should be resting well after coming back.
“You’re lucky, no one’s home.”
Indeed lucky. Tang Xiaorou had thought she would need to make a good impression, her body had been tense the whole time, but seeing no one was home, she immediately relaxed.
After getting home, Yu Chuyao remembered that she hadn’t eaten dinner yet since she was helping at the snack shop today.
“Tsk.” She thought for a moment, feeling it was a bit troublesome.
Tang Xiaorou also noticed her dilemma and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“We haven’t eaten dinner yet…” she looked at the kitchen: “But my mom’s not home, and there’s no leftover food to heat up…”
Oh, was that all? Tang Xiaorou chuckled, and after putting away the things she brought, she patted her chest confidently, looking like she had it all under control: “That’s simple.”
Yu Chuyao raised an eyebrow, looking at her in surprise: “You know how to cook?”
If you were talking about her in high school in her previous life, she really didn’t know how. Tang Xiaorou used to be someone who never did housework, her family was wealthy, and Mrs. Tang’s snack shop work was quite leisurely, so naturally, she took on the task of cooking at home.
But as time went on, after experiencing many things, she was no longer the naive young lady she used to be. As more and more people gathered around Su Yingying, the pressure she felt in pursuing increased, so she could only work hard to become better.
Culinary skills were certainly one of them. While she might not be at the level of a top chef, at least with all the online tutorials, she could recreate dishes with about 70-80% accuracy, and the taste wasn’t bad.
“Let me see.” There were quite a few things in the kitchen, obviously Mrs. Yu had prepared them knowing her work hours weren’t fixed and there might be times she couldn’t manage: “This should be enough.”
After saying that, she started working, rolling up her sleeves, taking an apron from the refrigerator hook and tying it on herself, looking so skilled that she didn’t seem like someone who spent all day confined in school.
This made Yu Chuyao even more curious — was she really just a 16 or 17-year-old student?
How come compared to her, even though she had already been in university before transmigrating into the book, she still couldn’t do anything?
Tang Xiaorou hadn’t thought that much about it. In her view, wasn’t knowing how to cook quite common? Some children are quite independent from a young age, surely it wouldn’t reveal any information?
She skillfully washed and cut vegetables, heated oil in the wok. From Yu Chuyao’s observation, her knife skills seemed comparable to Mrs. Yu, and she didn’t need to think or wait, just followed her instincts through every step of cooking.
“Do you need me to do anything?”
Yu Chuyao stood beside her feeling a bit at a loss. After all, Tang Xiaorou was the guest, yet she was letting her busy herself in the kitchen. Just standing there doing nothing didn’t seem quite right?
“It’s fine, I’ll be done soon.”
Tang Xiaorou thought that it didn’t matter whether Yu Chuyao could cook or not. For two people living together, only one needed to know how, and she didn’t mind being that person. Cooking could be tiring sometimes, but if it was for Yu Chuyao, it wasn’t a problem.
Being acknowledged by the person you like is also a kind of satisfaction.
So while Yu Chuyao was standing there at a loss, Tang Xiaorou directly prepared three dishes and a soup, placed them on the table steaming hot, perfect in appearance, aroma, and presentation, just looking at them made one’s appetite grow.
Uh…
“Come on, try it and see how it tastes.” To be honest, she hadn’t had a chance to cook since returning to life, so she wasn’t sure if her skills had deteriorated.
Yu Chuyao nodded dumbly and started tasting with her chopsticks. Meanwhile, Tang Xiaorou took the opportunity to properly observe Yu Chuyao’s home.
Honestly, although the house wasn’t small, because it was in the most complex and ordinary urban village in the city, it didn’t look too expensive. Moreover, the home decoration was very ordinary — the sofa, tea table, and television, compared to her home, to put it bluntly, there was about a 10-year gap.
With such an ordinary and simple family background, why could Yu Chuyao transform so dramatically in just one month after the college entrance exam, even surpassing Tang Xiaorou of that time?
She couldn’t figure it out no matter how hard she thought.
“Mmm!” While she was thinking and looking for any clues that might give her answers, Yu Chuyao, who was eating beside her, made a sound. She quickly asked, “What’s wrong, is there a problem with the taste?”
Yu Chuyao, with food still in her mouth, shook her head. After swallowing, she finally expressed her sincere praise.
“No!”
“It’s delicious!”
