Chapter 48: Misunderstanding
***
When Tang Xiaorou returned to the classroom with lunch, she saw the empty chair at her seat and fell into deep thought.
Where did she go?
She had been quick enough already. Although Yu Chuyao told her there was no need to rush and that she could walk there and back slowly, taking too long would mean not having enough time to eat once back in the classroom, so she still moved faster than walking pace.
But when she returned, she didn’t see Yu Chuyao’s figure as usual, which left her puzzled.
“What’s wrong?” Yu Chuyao’s voice came from behind at this moment. Looking back, she saw her playing with her fake bangs as she walked over: “Why are you standing here?”
As she spoke, she helped Tang Xiaorou take half of the lunch and placed it on their desk.
“Where did you go?” Tang Xiaorou asked as she sat down.
The question seemed harmless, but Yu Chuyao was casually opening her lunchbox to eat. However, when these words were spoken, Yu Chuyao’s body noticeably froze.
Something’s fishy. Tang Xiaorou raised an eyebrow, feeling that Yu Chuyao’s earlier departure definitely wasn’t as simple as getting water or using the bathroom.
“Nothing.” Yu Chuyao quickly regained her composure and smiled at her: “Let’s eat quickly.”
Tang Xiaorou tentatively sniffed: “Really nothing happened?”
Yu Chuyao’s heart wavered, and she instinctively wanted to touch her neck. But realizing the necklace was no longer there, she knew that making such a gesture would definitely let Tang Xiaorou discover she had lost the necklace.
Maybe it’s better not to say anything, that necklace seemed quite important to Tang Xiaorou, losing it would inevitably make her sad or angry.
She would go pick it up during the evening self-study break, and pretend nothing happened.
Oh no, she couldn’t act like nothing happened, Jiang Xinxin treating her this way couldn’t be let go.
“Well, if anything happens, make sure to tell me first, otherwise solving problems after they occur is much more troublesome than knowing about them in advance,” Tang Xiaorou reminded Yu Chuyao once again.
“Mm-hmm, I know.” Yu Chuyao agreed on the surface, but still didn’t tell her about what had happened earlier.
Perhaps she felt a bit embarrassed about always having Tang Xiaorou stand up against Su Yingying for her. What kind of character was Jiang Xinxin? Even in the original text, she was just a supporting character. Since they were both supporting characters, why should she be afraid?
Might as well be tough for once, otherwise how could she restore her ma… oh no, restore her female dignity!
She endured until the break during evening self-study. As soon as the bell rang, Yu Chuyao was ready to quickly find it in the landscaped area and return swiftly without anyone noticing.
“Hey hey, where are you going?” Tang Xiaorou reached out to grab her, but unexpectedly, Yu Chuyao, who usually struggled to keep up with her short legs, had already darted to the classroom door in a flash.
“Got something to do, be right back!” Yu Chuyao said to Tang Xiaorou before disappearing at the doorway.
Tang Xiaorou indeed didn’t follow, which made Yu Chuyao feel relieved. She really felt embarrassed, something given to her by someone else during the day, and she couldn’t even keep it safe for one day. She couldn’t bring herself to say it, wuwuwu.
Her skin was still too thin.
The landscaped area was large, making it difficult to find such a small necklace in it. But Yu Chuyao still remembered the location where Jiang Xinxin had thrown it, roughly near a pine tree by the school fence.
Turning on her phone and flashlight, she quietly snuck in and walked towards that direction.
Carefully bending down, she searched slowly, afraid to miss anything, otherwise she’d have to start over from the beginning.
Soon she reached that spot, and since the necklace was made of metal, even though it was quite old, it would still reflect light under illumination. Yu Chuyao was overjoyed when she saw it, surprised it would be this easy.
But just as she was about to walk over and pick up the necklace, suddenly two figures rushed out from the pine tree, instantly appearing in front of her.
“Don’t move!” The two people each grabbed one of Yu Chuyao’s arms with great force, making it impossible for her to break free even if she wanted to.
“Aaaaah?” Yu Chuyao couldn’t understand this development, how could there be people hiding in the pine tree so late at night! And why did they need to grab her like this?
Had she done something wrong?
“Trying to get out from here, huh?” Illuminated by Yu Chuyao’s phone flashlight, the middle-aged man’s face was stern as a curtain, obviously a homeroom teacher from some class.
“Huh? No, I’m not!” Yu Chuyao was completely confused, she just wanted to pick up a necklace and leave, how did this become about leaving school?
Looking back, she finally saw that there was a missing bar in the fence, just big enough for a person to get through. Probably some students had pried it open to sneak out and skip class, and the teachers discovered it and were staking out here, mistaking her for a student trying to leave.
“No no no, I just came to pick something up.” Yu Chuyao was at a loss for words, how could this be such a coincidence?
“Don’t explain so much, just write down your name and class first.” The middle-aged man instructed the young man beside him to take Yu Chuyao away first, while he continued to stake out here.
“Really, I have no need to go out…” Yu Chuyao explained to this young teacher: “I’m a day student… why would I need to climb out to leave school?”
The young teacher sighed, he was actually just dragged here as labor. Anyone could see that Yu Chuyao wasn’t the type of student who would violate rules, but unfortunately the middle-aged teacher had already given instructions, so he had to follow them.
“Can’t help it, let’s record it first.” He consoled Yu Chuyao: “It will just be reported to your homeroom teacher, the rest will be decided after investigation.”
Yu Chuyao could only click her tongue, secretly cursing her bad luck.
When hearing that Yu Chuyao was a senior high school student, the young teacher became even more convinced that she wasn’t trying to sneak out to play. Therefore, after recording her name and class, he let her go back.
Fortunately, before Yu Chuyao was taken away earlier, she had still managed to bend down and pick up the necklace, otherwise it would have really been a losing situation.
But this couldn’t cover up Yu Chuyao’s sadness, after all, being wrongly accused was something anyone would take issue with.
When she returned to the classroom, Tang Xiaorou was wondering what Yu Chuyao was doing that took so long, and smiled while waving when she saw her return.
However, when she saw Yu Chuyao’s face looking so sad she was almost crying, the smile on her lips and waving hand slowly froze.
“What happened, what happened?” She panicked inside, how did she end up like this after being gone for less than 10 minutes?
Combined with her hurried expression before leaving, it was hard not to suspect that Yu Chuyao was hiding something.
“Tell me quickly, maybe I can help you solve it.” Tang Xiaorou held her hand, gently patting it to comfort Yu Chuyao.
