Chapter 47: Nobody Drops the Act
***
A necklace is something that makes you constantly aware of having something on your neck when you first wear it, but once you get used to it, you forget it’s even there.
After just half a day, Yu Chuyao no longer had the unconscious habit of fidgeting with the necklace, basically treating it as if it didn’t exist.
Like any other afternoon when the bell rang, students rushed to the cafeteria for lunch, Tang Xiaorou also left leisurely, leaving Yu Chuyao alone as usual.
Sitting in the classroom working on practice problems Tang Xiaorou had prepared for her, quietly waiting. Only the music from the broadcast remained, which brought some emotional relief to Yu Chuyao, making her hum along with the song.
But suddenly a knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. Looking towards the door, she saw a girl peering in.
With her being the only person in the classroom, was there really a need to look left and right? Yu Chuyao was puzzled, but still politely asked, “Are you looking for someone?”
“Um…” the unfamiliar girl hesitated for a moment, then said, “Are you Yu Chuyao?”
“Yes, I am.” Yu Chuyao nodded.
“It’s like this.” Since she had found the person and saw no other students around, the girl became a bit bolder: “Someone is waiting for you on the campus ring road behind the teaching building.”
After saying this, she left, seemingly just a messenger who didn’t even need to show the way.
Yu Chuyao was a bit confused, but still put down her pen, tidied up and prepared to go see what it was about.
In school, nothing strange should happen, right?
The so-called “behind the teaching building” was actually on the right side of the main gate from the school entrance’s perspective, separated from the outside only by a large landscaped area and fence.
With no trees or buildings blocking the view, anything that happened would be easily seen.
That’s why Yu Chuyao wasn’t worried about going down alone.
When she arrived at the agreed spot, she didn’t see any familiar figures, so she decided to wait a bit longer.
Just as she let her guard down, a voice from behind nearly made her cry out.
“I advise you to stay away from Tang Xiaorou early.” That sudden voice was full of threat and anger, as if ready to swallow Yu Chuyao whole the next second.
Yu Chuyao was sensitive to voices, and immediately recognized it as the person who often followed Su Yingying.
Ah, what was her name again, oh right, Jiang Xinxin.
What did she want to meet her here for?
“What, what, what do you want?” Yu Chuyao was surprised, wondering how the other person suddenly appeared behind her. Could it be that she had followed her all the way from the classroom?
“Nothing much.” Jiang Xinxin’s expression wasn’t pleasant, her face drooping as if Yu Chuyao owed her 250,000 yuan: “Just telling you that Tang Xiaorou isn’t someone a little country bumpkin like you can get.”
Again with the “country bumpkin” this and that, how stupid could this person be to keep using such words?
“Whatever is between Tang Xiaorou and me isn’t up to me anyway.” Seeing no one around, Yu Chuyao no longer needed to pretend to be a nobody, and this wasn’t even the original novel’s protagonist she was facing, so whatever: “As for you, why do you care so much about Tang Xiaorou? Do you like her too? Though looking at you, probably no one blind enough would be interested.”
“And constantly saying ‘country bumpkin’, it really shows your upbringing is worse than dog training.”
Originally, Jiang Xinxin had just come to warn Yu Chuyao. Being by Su Yingying’s side, she had received too many benefits from Tang Xiaorou over the past two years, and this past month had made her very uncomfortable. Knowing Su Yingying was too proud to lower herself, she felt she had to make an effort.
Of course, not to make Tang Xiaorou pursue her, any clear-headed person could see that was impossible.
But targeting Yu Chuyao, making her actively leave Tang Xiaorou, she thought that was possible.
She just didn’t expect Yu Chuyao to talk to her like this.
“I’ve also heard Tang Xiaorou say that even doubling your total score wouldn’t match others, seems like you really do have brain problems. First High School’s environment might not suit you, better drop out early.” Yu Chuyao continued to sneer: “Or maybe spend some time getting your brain checked at the hospital, perhaps a mental hospital would suit you better.”
If you asked her to curse, Yu Chuyao might be too conscious of her upbringing and current beautiful girl status to say it out loud. But mocking someone? That came naturally.
Having been protected by Tang Xiaorou’s side for too long recently, holding things in wasn’t good either, finally finding an outlet, she had to deliver a good piece.
Being mocked like this by Yu Chuyao, Jiang Xinxin’s face, which was already cold, now turned as black as a pot bottom, looking like it could be used as a blackboard.
“You! You! You!” She angrily pointed at Yu Chuyao, so angry she didn’t know what to say, temporarily unable to organize her language, almost fainting from anger: “No matter what, hurry up and leave Tang Xiaorou, or else…”
“Heh, or what?” Yu Chuyao chuckled, not caring at all about Jiang Xinxin’s threats, knowing she couldn’t do anything anyway.
No time to waste here with her, might as well go back and do a few more practice problems.
Having said that, she prepared to turn and leave.
“No! Don’t go!” Jiang Xinxin panicked and reached out to grab Yu Chuyao’s collar.
She managed to grab the collar firmly, but also caught the necklace Tang Xiaorou had given her that morning. Neither of them noticed, and with a bit of force, the necklace came undone at the back, not even scratching her neck.
But Yu Chuyao felt it, quickly touching her neck to find the necklace indeed gone. Turning around, she saw Jiang Xinxin holding the necklace, smirking at her.
“Hahaha.” Jiang Xinxin held the necklace, waving it at Yu Chuyao: “This is what Tang Xiaorou gave you, right? I’m going to throw it away now, let’s see what you’ll do!”
Then with a wave of her hand, she threw the necklace into the nearby landscaped area, where it disappeared from sight.
Yu Chuyao: …
“Bleh~” Making a face at Yu Chuyao, Jiang Xinxin laughed: “Take your time finding it, and be careful not to make Tang Xiaorou angry, hahaha.”
What a petty victory. Not giving Yu Chuyao a chance to continue her verbal assault, Jiang Xinxin ran off in a flash, leaving Yu Chuyao standing alone on the campus ring road, dumbfounded.
She looked towards where the necklace had been thrown, feeling complicated.
This landscaped area was at least several hundred square meters in size. Looking for such a small necklace in there, while not exactly like finding a needle in a haystack, was still a massive undertaking.
At this time, the music being played was also reaching its final songs, and Yu Chuyao realized the break was almost over. If she started looking now, she wouldn’t find it before class started.
Sighing, she had no choice but to think about going back first and coming to look during the break between evening self-study sessions.
