Chapter 46: The Necklace
***
“Here, put this on.”
“What is it?”
During break, Tang Xiaorou came back from outside and suddenly pulled something out of her pocket, then gestured as if preparing to put it on Yu Chuyao.
Yu Chuyao couldn’t see clearly what it was and felt a bit confused.
The item was small, and when she finally saw it clearly, it turned out to be a necklace.
The necklace’s design was simple, without any fancy decorations, just a simple rope-woven chain with what appeared to be either a crescent moon or a split heart hanging in the middle.
Yu Chuyao didn’t understand why Tang Xiaorou was giving this to her, but by the time she came to her senses, Tang Xiaorou had already put it around her neck.
“What’s this?” Yu Chuyao lowered her head, fingering the necklace. It was cool to the touch, and from the feeling, it wasn’t entirely new but had some age to it.
Tang Xiaorou didn’t explain much, only saying meaningfully: “A… very important thing.”
How is that any different from not explaining? Yu Chuyao rolled her eyes at her but didn’t take it off.
Time went back to 10 minutes ago, just as class ended.
Su Yingying was at her desk organizing test papers when suddenly a pair of fair hands knocked on her desk, catching her attention.
Looking up, she saw Tang Xiaorou with her characteristically cold expression, not looking at her but staring straight ahead, saying flatly: “Come out for a moment.” Then she walked away on her own.
“See, I told you, Yingying, this person definitely couldn’t hold back anymore. Look, she’s already asking you to meet privately,” Jiang Xinxin was still stirring things up on the side. Recently, without Tang Xiaorou around, she hadn’t been doing too well staying by Su Yingying’s side either, her quality of life had dropped significantly, and she couldn’t even afford to buy leisure books and novels anymore.
But Su Yingying didn’t feel that way.
Recently, she had been hovering around Xie Jin, thinking it would provoke Tang Xiaorou, but unexpectedly it not only failed to cause any change but even led to criticism in front of both of them.
Where was any sign of reconciliation in that?
But she still had to go out now, to see what this person wanted.
Ignoring Jiang Xinxin’s excitement, Su Yingying got up and left the classroom.
The two went to the top floor of the teaching building, just one locked door away from the rooftop. Almost no one came here, making it the best spot for private conversations.
“What do you want?” Su Yingying didn’t think Tang Xiaorou would have a change of heart and come back to pursue her: “If you have something to say, say it quickly. If not, I’m going back.”
“Give me back the necklace I gave you.” Tang Xiaorou held out her hand.
Necklace? What necklace?
Su Yingying couldn’t remember for a moment. It wasn’t that she didn’t have any necklaces; Tang Xiaorou had given her some jewelry and cosmetics over the past two years, but she couldn’t figure out which one Tang Xiaorou meant.
Of course, Tang Xiaorou wasn’t asking Su Yingying to return everything. Some were consumables, not to mention Su Yingying wouldn’t return them anyway, and as for the jewelry, there was no point in asking – even if she demanded them back, Jiang Xinxin would probably stubbornly refuse when she went to get them.
To avoid unnecessary trouble, she would stick to the most important target.
“The first necklace I gave you two years ago.” Actually, for Tang Xiaorou, this memory was also quite distant. In her previous life, this necklace had stayed with Su Yingying ever since she gave it to her, and now after being reborn, she suddenly remembered it and hurried to ask for it back.
The necklace held special meaning for her; she could write off everything else as a loss, but not this one.
Su Yingying was stunned, it was indeed hard to remember something from two years ago. After thinking carefully for a while, she finally recalled which necklace Tang Xiaorou was talking about.
“Oh, that one.” Su Yingying snorted. That thing seemed to be just a cheap item, like something won from a 50-cent lottery draw at an elementary school gate. When it was given to her, she hadn’t even worn it, just tossed it into her storage bag.
Thinking about it now, it must have been lying there for over two years.
“It’s in the classroom, fine, I’ll give it to you.” Su Yingying waved her hand dismissively, turning to head back to the classroom. She thought Tang Xiaorou had something important to discuss, but it was just for this.
Such a casual attitude made Tang Xiaorou’s heart burn with anger.
When she first gave it to Su Yingying, she had clearly explained that this was something very important to her, and it should have meant something to Su Yingying too. However, the other person’s attitude suggested she had never cared about it at all.
How could this not make one angry? Although she had seen through this woman’s detestable nature after everything in her previous life, the necklace reminded her of certain things from the past, making her feel sad.
Back in the classroom, Su Yingying dug out the necklace from the deepest corner of her storage bag, tossed it on the desk for Tang Xiaorou to take, and the latter didn’t hesitate to pick it up and leave.
“How was it, Yingying? Was I right?” Jiang Xinxin still foolishly came over to talk.
“Right about what!” Su Yingying gave her an irritated look. She used to think Jiang Xinxin’s advice about how to deal with Tang Xiaorou was useful, helping her get whatever she wanted, but now she felt it was becoming increasingly unreliable.
After returning, Tang Xiaorou put the necklace around Yu Chuyao’s neck.
Although high school rules didn’t allow wearing jewelry or necklaces, girls typically had long hair, and Yu Chuyao’s school uniform was quite loose. Just by lowering her head slightly, half her face would be hidden in her clothes, making anything hanging around her neck completely invisible.
“Do you like it?” Tang Xiaorou asked casually. This wasn’t something expensive, so it would be normal if a girl didn’t like it.
Yu Chuyao scratched her head and chuckled: “Mm, it’s okay.”
“Really?” Tang Xiaorou suspected Yu Chuyao was lying to tease her: “I don’t want you to lie to me!” Her expression turned serious for a moment, hoping Yu Chuyao would take it seriously.
“Yes yes.” Yu Chuyao nodded. She really did think it was fine. After all, for her, whether things were valuable or not didn’t matter; as long as they were fun, pretty, or interesting, that was enough. Never mind a necklace — give her a straight stick, and she could happily play with it for half a day.
Yu Chuyao doesn’t lie, this was something Tang Xiaorou was certain of after spending time with her. The little one appeared silly and was very pure.
“Then can you wear it always?” Tang Xiaorou asked very seriously.
Yu Chuyao was startled, not understanding why Tang Xiaorou suddenly became so serious, as if her not wearing it would break her heart.
This shouldn’t count as a token of love, right? It didn’t look expensive, and she could accept that.
Yu Chuyao hesitated for a moment but still gently nodded.
However, their intimate interaction was seen by Jiang Xinxin, who had just been complained about by Su Yingying. The close interaction made her gnash her teeth, feeling anxious and frustrated inside.
