Chapter 44: You Didn’t Make Use of the Chance I Gave You
***
From the moment they entered, seeing how the owner greeted them with a smile, this place must also be one of Tang Xiaorou’s family’s tenants.
Although Xie Jin’s family was also wealthy, considered a well-known young master in Q City. But compared to him, Tang Xiaorou’s network of relationships might not be as deep, and her family’s business and social status were definitely not in the same league.
“Oh my, Miss Rou, how come you have time to play pool?” The owner glanced at the time on his phone: “3 hours off on the weekend?”
“Mm, just set up any table in the corner.” Tang Xiaorou exchanged a few pleasantries with him, then stated her purpose for coming: “Just want to practice with friends.”
“Alright. Table 8, it’s ready.” The owner pointed to the most spacious area nearest to the rest area. The originally dark pool table was illuminated by the overhead lights in everyone’s view.
Tang Xiaorou said any table would do. But with her status as both the landlord’s daughter and a regular customer, how could they just casually arrange anything? The owner naturally had to arrange the best spot properly.
This area was not only spacious with complete rest facilities, but also directly faced the security cameras, making it convenient for customers to review their best shots in the surveillance footage. Therefore, unless business was extremely busy, this area was reserved for familiar customers.
“Do you know how to play pool?” Tang Xiaorou casually pulled out a thin cue stick, weighing it a few times in front of Yu Chuyao, suggesting if she’d like to play too: “If you don’t know how, I can teach you later.”
“I know a little bit.”
Actually, if you say you don’t know how, it’s just holding the stick, setting up, and using the white ball to knock the desired ball into the pocket, it’s quite simple to start. Yu Chuyao had only been in university for 3 months, but when her roommates took her out for meals, they would occasionally play for a few hours.
If you say you’re good at it, then there are many techniques involved. Those who are truly skilled can basically sink several balls in one shot without stopping, even clearing the table directly, knowing exactly how to hit and pocket balls, that’s real skill.
Obviously Yu Chuyao, who only knew the basics, couldn’t do that. She only believed in brute force creating miracles.
Just trust in strength, and leave the rest to luck!
“Watch me take him down a notch.” Tang Xiaorou winked.
Xie Jin also took a cue stick, facing Tang Xiaorou across the table. As the most socially active person with the biggest reputation in their classmate circle, Xie Jin was quite confident in his pool skills.
Therefore, facing a girl like Tang Xiaorou, he naturally had to show off his stance. So he gestured: “Ladies first.”
“Well, you said it.” Tang Xiaorou didn’t hesitate, since he offered.
Xie Jin thought that although there were quite a few girls who played pool, he had never seen any who truly loved and mastered it. Especially girls like Tang Xiaorou and Su Yingying, during high school they probably just went shopping and dressed up.
He thought Tang Xiaorou chose pool just to make up for the physical differences between boys and girls. Although Tang Xiaorou was tall at 1.7 meters, which was quite tall for a girl, she was still quite a bit shorter compared to them who were over 1.8 meters.
“Go for it, Xie Jin.” Unlike Yu Chuyao who sat quietly watching the match, Su Yingying specially ran to Xie Jin’s side, quietly cheering: “You must give Tang Xiaorou a good beating!”
Xie Jin gripped the cue stick slightly harder, raising it a bit to show his determination.
But when he heard several crisp collision sounds and wanted to look up to see how Tang Xiaorou’s break shot was, he was already dumbfounded.
Because Tang Xiaorou’s break was very good, and she had already pocketed two balls. It’s worth noting that from the first shot until now it was only two shots, and pocketing balls with every shot was already considered very good form for them.
In high school, their main energy was focused on studying, so not many people studied pool techniques, just playing the simplest way. Even so, because the price of the pool hall itself was not cheap for high school students’ allowances, far less economical than going to an internet café.
Tang Xiaorou very calmly walked around the pool table with her cue stick, and after locking onto her target, what seemed like a casual shot would result in a ball being pocketed, even for balls at very difficult angles.
“Great!” Yu Chuyao acted as the cheerleader on the side, applauding. For many shots that would be just hit-and-hope situations for her, the white ball would bounce around the table a few times and somehow precisely deliver the target ball into the pocket.
If once or twice could be luck, could it be luck every time?
In just a few minutes, Tang Xiaorou had cleared most of her balls, leaving only the striking black 8-ball lying on the table, painfully stinging the eyes of Xie Jin and Su Yingying.
However, at this point Tang Xiaorou stopped, sat on the edge of the pool table, and smiled at the two: “How about it? Want me to give you a ball’s advantage?”
In her view, this black 8-ball was as good as pocketed, it was just a matter of whether she wanted to or not.
“Where did you learn such good skills?” Su Yingying looked at her in disbelief, her jaw about to drop, this completely exceeded her understanding of Tang Xiaorou.
Tang Xiaorou smiled, her pool skills were actually thanks to Su Yingying.
The specific reason won’t be mentioned, it’s a bit embarrassing to recall. Basically, during university when Su Yingying was mingling among various groups fishing for attention, pool was considered a relatively relaxing recreational activity, many pursuers liked to come here to play, so she was used as a shield to deal with those situations.
Thus, through this repeated process, Tang Xiaorou, being someone with strong learning ability and extremely competitive nature, whether through active learning or passive practice, developed this precise technique.
Watching Tang Xiaorou make such cool shots one after another, Yu Chuyao sitting on the side felt a bit itchy, having an urge to go up and try a few shots herself.
However, with Xie Jin and Su Yingying still standing there and this round not finished yet, she could only quietly walk to Tang Xiaorou’s side, wanting to see how they would handle this situation.
Xie Jin’s expression wasn’t good, being given a handicap by someone, and especially by Tang Xiaorou, felt like she wasn’t taking him seriously at all.
The more he felt this way, the more he needed to prove himself. Since the opponent gave him a chance, he couldn’t fall behind, he had to pocket every shot and finally take the remaining game.
The plan in his mind was good, as long as he could clear through to the black 8-ball in one go, this game wouldn’t count as losing to Tang Xiaorou.
Without further hesitation, he set up his stance and forcefully struck the white ball.
However, the result wasn’t as beautiful as he imagined.
“How did you miss on your first shot?” Tang Xiaorou couldn’t help but burst into laughter, because she saw Xie Jin’s shot, though seemingly powerful, actually sent the white ball running half a circle on the table without hitting anything.
Isn’t this just giving up the game?
