Chapter 39: You Lost
***
What Tang Xiaorou said wasn’t without reason.
Two days later, when the grades were announced, there wasn’t much of a stir among the classmates.
Many people’s grades were actually quite stable, and even if some people improved, others weren’t just sitting around being lazy, they were naturally studying hard too. Therefore, the rankings basically wouldn’t have any earth-shattering changes.
Of course, there were exceptions, like our nobody Yu Chuyao.
As mentioned before, Yu Chuyao’s grades weren’t particularly good, ranking 47th was even somewhat towards the bottom.
But when the results came out this time, her name, which used to be easier to find counting from the bottom, suddenly couldn’t be found where expected!
32nd place! She had reached nearly the middle level, and the scores of those ranked before and after her weren’t very different, so it was basically fine to consider them at the same level.
This was huge progress, especially considering this was already after unified review and remedial studying. To improve grades further, one would basically need to tackle even harder material.
But progress that way would be extremely slow, and one might not even improve much by the college entrance exam.
Seeing this improvement, Yu Chuyao felt secretly pleased.
She knew very well that her previous foundation was relatively weak, so rapid improvement now was normal. But this kind of substantial improvement in ranking would excite anyone, right? After all, all that effort had paid off.
“See? Being my desk mate guarantees your grades won’t be bad.” This really wasn’t Tang Xiaorou bragging.
She was still first in the class this time. Even though she had left high school many years ago, having gone through it before, with some time, that day-and-night effort would surge forth like it was encoded in her DNA.
Being her desk mate had worked out well enough for both Ran Xia and Su Yingying.
You might say Su Yingying’s grades weren’t good before? Well, consider that her desk mate Jiang Xinxin spent all day reading novels with her, maintaining middle-of-the-class grades was already thanks to heaven and earth, plus Tang Xiaorou’s exhausting tutoring sessions.
“You’re really giving yourself too much credit!” Yu Chuyao joked, but internally she truly acknowledged Tang Xiaorou’s ability.
After all, before transmigrating into the book, she never had such a high-level study expert sister specifically teaching her hands-on when she needed it most.
Faced with Yu Chuyao’s teasing, Tang Xiaorou just shrugged and said narcissistically: “Can’t help it, it’s just my capability.” It wasn’t just her boasting, in this aspect, she could say she had absolute confidence.
Seeing Yu Chuyao’s progress, she believed it wouldn’t take long before both of them could advance to the front positions in the whole school.
Compared to Tang Xiaorou and Yu Chuyao’s happiness, the two in front seemed a bit quiet.
The two looked at the grades they had just copied down from the back and fell into deep thought.
Jiang Xinxin was still okay, she actually knew her own grades, otherwise she wouldn’t have given up and read novels all day in class. Even in senior year, anyone with a bit of motivation would know to study somewhat.
Su Yingying was different, although her grades weren’t too good before, at least she could maintain them, and since she usually played around more with Jiang Xinxin, she believed she could improve well if she just got serious.
Her family’s circumstances were just average, so they had high expectations for her, hoping she could get into a good university.
But now, looking at her ranking of over 40th place, her original calmness and composure seemed to have been shattered by a hammer, scattered all over the ground.
And the person wielding that hammer was none other than Tang Xiaorou, whom she had never taken seriously.
“Yingying, this…” Jiang Xinxin hadn’t expected that they would fall to the bottom of the class, and they were still sitting in the best area of the classroom, surrounded by students ranked in the top 20 or even top 10 of the class, the pressure was quite intense.
“I told you to read fewer novels, if we keep going like this, we’ll probably both end up working in factories!” Su Yingying said through gritted teeth. She had thought there was still some time before the college entrance exam, and there were people who had improved enough for key universities in just the last month or two before the exam.
While Su Yingying didn’t have such lofty ambitions, she at least wanted to get into a school with a decent reputation!
But now, reality had brutally shattered her fantasy.
Could it be that she had maintained those grades before only because of Tang Xiaorou’s tutoring? Su Yingying couldn’t help but wonder.
Previously, her attitude towards Tang Xiaorou was like someone who didn’t want to reject but felt it would be a shame to lose the benefits. She didn’t like girls, so naturally wouldn’t accept Tang Xiaorou’s pursuit.
But Tang Xiaorou’s behavior of giving her benefits even after rejection gradually became a habit for her, making her feel that since someone wanted to pursue her, and she hadn’t actively asked for it, why should she feel guilty?
Gradually, this habit became comfortable enjoyment taken for granted.
“What should we do? If this continues, we really won’t be able to get into university, right?”
Jiang Xinxin’s words were undoubtedly a devastating blow to Su Yingying. Last year’s score requirements were still posted on the bulletin board in front, and comparing with her own scores, just one or two points lower and she wouldn’t even have the chance to apply.
No, she needed to think of a solution.
She had planned to listen properly to the teacher’s explanation of the test paper, but feeling uncomfortable after enduring until class ended, she wanted to take a walk. However, she didn’t expect Tang Xiaorou, who had been waiting at the back for a long time, to just sit there with her arms crossed, watching her.
Su Yingying certainly knew what Tang Xiaorou was waiting for. The words they had exchanged about this mock exam now felt like a boomerang hitting her.
To say that her and Jiang Xinxin’s total scores combined were indeed higher than Tang Xiaorou. But wasn’t it embarrassing? The sum of two people’s scores was only twenty or thirty points higher than Tang Xiaorou, she was too ashamed to tell others.
Let alone comparing her with Yu Chuyao, originally ranked behind her, but now their positions had completely reversed.
“Well?” Tang Xiaorou sat with her arms crossed, smiling at Su Yingying, waiting for her response.
Su Yingying gritted her teeth, very unwilling to admit she wasn’t as good as Yu Chuyao, but that was the reality, and no matter how much she wanted to quibble, it was useless.
“I’ll admit defeat this time.” Su Yingying snorted, but this didn’t mean she had completely given up: “Temporary success or failure doesn’t mean anything, I’ll still have plenty of chances to surpass you in the future!”
Tang Xiaorou showed equal disdain, she didn’t believe Su Yingying could stir up any waves again. If she could, she wouldn’t have relied on herself to get into a good university in her previous life.
In her view, this was just Su Yingying’s stubbornness.
“I hope you can maintain this attitude when you’re in the same situation next time.” Tang Xiaorou raised an eyebrow, her body unconsciously leaning towards Yu Chuyao who was correcting her wrong answers beside her, causing her to cry out in surprise and push her away with an annoyed expression.
