Chapter 35: A Girl Chasing Another Girl Through a Veil of Mist
***
“Huh?”
Tang Xiaorou was stunned.
Haven’t I mentioned this before?
Thinking carefully, it seemed she really hadn’t brought it up. After all, it was just casual talk with Su Yingying during class break, without any stakes or consequences, just a way for both parties to prove something.
And Tang Xiaorou’s academic performance didn’t need proving anyway, as everyone could see her position as top of the class, which Su Yingying couldn’t possibly shake.
So all she could do was compare herself with Yu Chuyao, to prove that she was more outstanding than Yu Chuyao.
And Yu Chuyao, who knew nothing about this, felt quite puzzled.
What was there to compare?
Although college entrance exams meant that people with better scores went to better universities, ultimately scores were for oneself to see. Where did this unnecessary spirit of comparison come from?
Yu Chuyao didn’t understand, so she felt it was completely unnecessary.
“So do you think I would agree?” Yu Chuyao frowned, feeling somewhat displeased.
She was at least half of the concerned party, right? How come no one asked for her opinion on this matter? Wasn’t this just unnecessarily drawing hostility from the female lead towards her?
“Um…” Tang Xiaorou paused, thought for a moment, and asked uncertainly, “You would, right?”
She actually knew Yu Chuyao’s transformed identity from her previous life, at a level far beyond what Su Yingying could compare to. If it weren’t for herself and the support of various love interests, they couldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath.
Such a girl would surely have her moment to shine, right? She also hoped Yu Chuyao wouldn’t continue being so self-deprecating.
“It’s not that I don’t want to.” Yu Chuyao actually didn’t mind being compared to anyone, but Tang Xiaorou and Su Yingying’s identities were rather special, and she felt there was really no need to be in opposition with Su Yingying.
“I’m sorry.” Tang Xiaorou realized her mistake; she had taken things for granted.
She thought Yu Chuyao’s transformation was inevitable, and her actions were just catalyzing it earlier, nothing too out of line.
But this intention also depended on Yu Chuyao herself. Perhaps she had always been hiding in corners since childhood, needing an appropriate opportunity rather than being forcefully pushed into the spotlight.
“There’s no need to apologize.” Yu Chuyao waved her hand; since what happened couldn’t be changed, she didn’t want to dwell on things she couldn’t alter.
Tang Xiaorou also understood that she had made a wrong move. Even though Yu Chuyao wouldn’t dislike her just for this one incident, it had somewhat diminished the close relationship she had carefully cultivated over this period.
She needed to calm down.
As a result, although Tang Xiaorou still arranged everything she usually did today, she definitely reduced her clingy behavior towards Yu Chuyao.
There needed to be tension and relaxation, maintaining proper balance. She had to handle this relationship and principle well.
By the time school ended and she returned home, Mrs. Tang noticed Tang Xiaorou’s state was completely different from recent days.
“What’s wrong, Rourou?” Mrs. Tang couldn’t help but ask. Ever since meeting Yu Chuyao, Tang Xiaorou had been coming home happy every day, and as soon as she got home, she couldn’t wait to tell her about everything that happened that day.
This kind of happiness needed no words, it could be judged from her state at first glance upon returning home.
But today’s Tang Xiaorou was obviously calmer, which made Mrs. Tang, as a parent, somewhat worried.
“Did you have some conflict with Xiao Yu?”
“No.” Tang Xiaorou felt this didn’t count as a conflict, at least it was her one-sided mistake.
Yu Chuyao might not mind her error, but in her view, they hadn’t reached the stage where they could disregard gains and losses. If she wanted to be good to Yu Chuyao, she couldn’t just consider things from her own perspective.
“Then what’s wrong?” Mrs. Tang was somewhat surprised. She was quite supportive of the relationship between Tang Xiaorou and Yu Chuyao. At least she really liked this little girl, much better than that previous Su Yingying. She felt at ease with her daughter liking such a girl.
After all, as parents, they hope their children can meet someone they can spend their life with.
“It’s like this.” Tang Xiaorou explained what happened between her and Yu Chuyao today, and also expressed that she understood her mistake but didn’t know what to do now.
Mrs. Tang understood now; this was a child’s oversight, a mistake.
Smiling, she took Tang Xiaorou’s hand and began to guide her.
“I understand what you mean. Actually, you didn’t do it on purpose, you just didn’t think about her perspective at the moment, which isn’t exactly excusable.”
“But you know, you’re pursuing her, so your actions should prioritize considering her, not yourself.”
Tang Xiaorou nodded. She indeed was trying to prove her judgment at the time, that choosing Yu Chuyao was better than Su Yingying, but the starting point was still herself.
But Yu Chuyao was also involved, yet she hadn’t considered her feelings.
In her previous life, no matter what Su Yingying did, she openly rejected things, and even when she later “had to” accept, there were people around her considering and solving things for her. Therefore, she had never considered the feelings of those involved.
Precisely because Yu Chuyao was different from Su Yingying, she needed to change too.
“Just like your father.” Mrs. Tang smiled and patted her head. “When your father was pursuing me back then, he just kept sending everything to me without considering that he had several admirers at the time. Being so high-profile was like putting me on the hot seat.”
Tang Xiaorou couldn’t help but laugh, so her father had such experiences too. Just imagining it, she could understand how her mother felt being targeted by these “love rivals” at work.
“But later, after many things happened, your father became more skilled in handling matters, and naturally understood.”
But Tang Xiaorou also knew her situation was different from her father. She was a girl pursuing another girl, different from normal male-female romance.
“Since you’ve already realized your problem, you need to make changes.” Mrs. Tang felt that with her daughter’s intelligence, she should understand what she meant.
Just then, Mr. Tang came out from the study, saw the mother and daughter sitting on the sofa, and curiously asked, “What secrets are you two sharing?”
“Talking about how you were a reckless youth who knew nothing but still insisted on chasing girls.”
“Ah, that’s ancient history, why bring it up!” Mr. Tang’s face reddened, obviously embarrassed about his immaturity in his youth.
Seeing her parents’ playful banter, Tang Xiaorou felt deeply gratified, because she hadn’t seen such scenes for a long time in her previous life.
Now life was beautiful, and she had enough time and energy to make changes.
The biggest challenge in a girl pursuing another girl, she still needed to solve. First, she needed to break through the boundary of friendship, to let the seed of love sprout.
But in reality… did Yu Chuyao really need this seed to be planted?
