Chapter 32: Meeting the Parents?
***
Two weeks passed, and finally there was a time when they could rest for more than a day.
For third-year high school students, this was an extremely rare holiday, as there weren’t many such long breaks throughout the entire final year.
Before this break, Tang Xiaorou had told Yu Chuyao that today she would take her to a place that would guarantee she wouldn’t worry about being a freeloader anymore.
Yu Chuyao was very curious about what kind of place could have such charm.
If it was about making her work at some store? They might not even want her. Let alone why they would listen to you, even if you are the landlord’s daughter, it doesn’t mean they have to agree to everything.
Moreover, she was still a third-year high school student with heavy academic pressure, and she might not be able to work many days in a month.
Who would dare to hire such an unstable, underage employee?
“Don’t worry, you’ll know when we get there,” Tang Xiaorou maintained a confident attitude, indicating that everything would be arranged perfectly under her management.
Yu Chuyao was skeptical but still trusted her.
After all, since she came to this book world, Tang Xiaorou had been quite reliable for such a long time, always taking care of her.
After changing clothes, she left the school gate and saw Tang Xiaorou leaning against a utility pole by the road, looking down at her phone. As soon as she saw Yu Chuyao come out, she immediately put it away.
“Shall we go?”
“Mm.”
Tang Xiaorou didn’t take her far, just about a 10-minute walk from school. While Yu Chuyao was wondering what there was to see nearby, she discovered another elementary school in the distance.
Damn, no wonder this area was popular, turns out there were so many schools. Add a middle school and they’d have the complete set from elementary to high school.
Walking a few more steps, an elegantly decorated small store caught her attention.
It wasn’t particularly special, but this store clearly looked different from the surrounding stationery shops, bookstores, and convenience stores.
A snack shop?
Yu Chuyao didn’t quite understand these things, scratching her head, thinking about how this store was different from the convenience stores she had seen near school before.
But before she could figure it out, Tang Xiaorou had already walked inside, so she had no choice but to follow.
Once inside, she discovered that the store really only sold snacks, treats, and drinks, nothing else. While convenience stores sometimes sold stationery and daily necessities, this felt more specialized.
She even noticed many brands she had never seen before.
No wonder it was opened near an elementary school; the little boys and girls must go crazy when they see this.
Indeed, it was currently lunch break time, and many children who hadn’t seen their parents coming to pick them up would walk a few steps and turn in, buying a few things before leaving.
“What is this place?” Yu Chuyao couldn’t help but ask, surely bringing her here wasn’t just to buy things?
Tang Xiaorou smiled and pointed to the back storage area: “This is my mom’s snack shop.”
Although Tang Xiaorou’s family had rental income from storefronts, which brought in a considerable amount each month, sometimes staying at home with nothing to do could be quite empty, and her parents were just like that.
So both of them found something to do outside, not seeking to earn much money, just wanting to pass time and be happy doing something.
“It’s been open for about 2 years now, and business is pretty good,” Tang Xiaorou introduced: “The main selling points are variety and low prices.”
Yu Chuyao picked up some snacks randomly and saw that the prices were indeed low. Even elementary school students with just a few yuan of pocket money could buy quite a lot at once.
Some items even made her mouth water.
“So you brought me here…”
“That’s right.” Tang Xiaorou snapped her fingers, confirming Yu Chuyao’s suspicion.
Then she walked into the back storage area she had pointed to earlier, and within half a minute, surprised conversation could be heard from inside.
“Really? You actually brought someone?”
“Of course it’s true, would I lie to you?”
“Alright, alright, hurry out, don’t keep the young lady waiting too long.”
Then Tang Xiaorou came out with her mother.
When Mrs. Tang first saw Yu Chuyao in the store, her first reaction was surprisingly good? Distinguished, pretty, standing there without any trace of being from a humble background.
This reaction also delighted Tang Xiaorou.
In her previous life, she had also brought Su Yingying to meet her parents, but at that time, her mother had just taken one look and expressed that she didn’t like Su Yingying.
But because Tang Xiaorou’s attitude was so determined, her father finally convinced her mother to reluctantly accept it a little after much persuasion.
The older generation can sometimes be very accurate in judging people, able to tell at a glance whether the person you’re with is suitable for you and whether they’re good for you.
“You must be Xiao Yu.” Mrs. Tang quickly walked to Yu Chuyao’s side and took both her hands: “I’ve been hearing Rourou mention you a lot lately.”
“Ah… Auntie, hello.” Yu Chuyao was thrown off by Mrs. Tang’s enthusiasm, she thought that as an elder, she would be more reserved. Unexpectedly, she was just like Tang Xiaorou, immediately being very friendly.
So indeed, like mother like daughter, even the way she smiled while holding her hands was identical to when they first met when she entered the book.
“Rourou told me she wanted you to help out at the store.” Mrs. Tang walked around the store with her, showing her the general situation: “I think it’s fine, I’m not very busy here anyway, just treat it like coming to play.”
“How could I…” Yu Chuyao hadn’t expected Tang Xiaorou would bring her to her mother’s store, someone like her who might only work one day a month… isn’t that a bit too much?
“Hey~” Mrs. Tang interrupted her with a smile: “What’s there to be embarrassed about, just think of it as keeping me company, so that daughter of mine who doesn’t come home until night might actually come running here.”
This wasn’t wrong, if Yu Chuyao came here, Tang Xiaorou would probably want to be nowhere else, spending every day here keeping her company.
After all, with both her mother and Yu Chuyao here, it would be hard to find a reason to refuse, right?
“Then…” Such a warm response left Yu Chuyao with no way to refuse, she could only nod: “I’ll give it a try.”
“That’s more like it.”
Actually, the work in the store wasn’t complicated, sometimes Mrs. Tang alone could manage everything just fine. Therefore, Yu Chuyao didn’t need to do much, at most just work as a cashier, watching the store.
It could hardly even be called work, more like helping out in the store like a kid would.
For this task, Yu Chuyao accepted without much worry, after all, she had received many favors from Tang Xiaorou.
And Tang Xiaorou and her mother exchanged glances, both their eyes flashing with satisfaction, as if having a silent conversation.
Good daughter, mom really likes this girl.
See, I told you she would be a good match.
