Chapter 26: Waiting to See
***
As time went by, Su Yingying found herself becoming increasingly out of sorts.
On the living expenses side, she only had an average student’s allowance. In the past, since Tang Xiaorou often took the initiative to cover many expenses for her, she basically didn’t have to pay for anything herself at school.
Gradually, she could save up a lot of money to buy things she wanted, like jewelry, clothes, and cosmetics.
But now Tang Xiaorou probably wouldn’t turn back even if she hit a wall, treating her and Jiang Xinxin like they were the plague.
Two years was enough time for her to develop habits from being pampered by Tang Xiaorou. Only after having to pay for everything herself, from meals to snacks and bubble tea, did she realize she couldn’t save any money at all.
She felt that she and Tang Xiaorou were impossible from the start. The idea of two girls dating didn’t align with the values her parents had instilled in her since childhood. So under Jiang Xinxin’s “guidance,” she never explicitly rejected Tang Xiaorou.
The huge disparity made her feel uncomfortable, but believing that with her conditions she could obtain a better life later, she couldn’t bring herself to approach Tang Xiaorou again.
While she could still convince herself that she would get used to this situation over time, her academic struggles were the most critical issue.
Previously, as the top student in the class, Tang Xiaorou had always hoped for teachers to arrange Su Yingying to sit next to her, making it convenient to help improve Su Yingying’s grades.
Su Yingying wasn’t someone who could focus on studying, but she hadn’t fallen behind in these past two years of high school, credit for which could be entirely attributed to Tang Xiaorou.
It was precisely because of this that Tang Xiaorou, who could have competed for an even higher ranking in the school, missed out on the opportunity.
It was said that the homeroom teacher had strong opinions about this but had to let it go due to Tang Xiaorou’s stubbornness at the time.
Now, Tang Xiaorou no longer revolved around her, instead choosing to seek out Yu Chuyao, even changing seats to be beside her to help with tutoring. This left Su Yingying and Jiang Xinxin, two people who didn’t care for studying, looking particularly out of place in the front row.
Especially Jiang Xinxin, who as a close friend in life was great company, but when it came to studying, she was definitely not a good companion.
“Xinxin, stop reading novels…” During class, Su Yingying noticed Jiang Xinxin secretly reading a novel on her desk and couldn’t help but poke her arm.
“Oh come on Yingying, reading novels isn’t a big deal, isn’t it good to accumulate some material and beautiful sentences for composition?” Jiang Xinxin even extended an invitation to Su Yingying: “Yingying, I have several more books here, would you like to read them too?”
Su Yingying was speechless but used to it. She and Jiang Xinxin had been deskmates bound together for two years, and she had seen Jiang Xinxin either spending money at the school magazine store buying leisure books or secretly turning on her phone to read e-books during class every day.
But if you ask why Su Yingying still sat with Jiang Xinxin despite all this?
Well, birds of a feather flock together.
“It should be fine if I read for a while, right?” Su Yingying played a little trick, secretly pulling out a book from Jiang Xinxin’s drawer, the one she hadn’t finished reading recently.
Before, she had Tang Xiaorou beside her who could help her study. Even if she didn’t pay attention in class, Tang Xiaorou would pull her aside afterward for tutoring. Su Yingying didn’t mind and often remained lazy and distracted.
This showed Su Yingying’s ingratitude.
Tang Xiaorou’s academic performance and ability to explain things were no worse than the teachers, and even more interesting. If she had put in even a little effort, she wouldn’t have been hovering around the undergraduate admission line.
Look at Yu Chuyao, who had been studying with Tang Xiaorou recently. She could clearly feel that she had regained her high school knowledge, and even learned more advanced methods than before.
Because of this, when Tang Xiaorou and Su Yingying made eye contact, the latter’s gaze was so strange.
From afar, Su Yingying saw Tang Xiaorou seemingly saying something to her, the voice too soft to hear clearly, but with the help of lip-reading, she could roughly understand the meaning.
“Enjoying reading novels during class?”
Tang Xiaorou now sat in the back and could see everything Su Yingying and Jiang Xinxin were doing in front. The two had been reading novels for two hours, and seeing this scene almost made Tang Xiaorou laugh out loud.
Su Yingying wasn’t someone with strong self-control to begin with, easily attracted to temptations, otherwise she wouldn’t have gotten involved with so many men in her previous life.
In terms of studying, without herself around, she was actually looking forward to seeing if Su Yingying could maintain her current mediocre performance in the next mock exam.
“Hmph!” Su Yingying was stubborn though, originally thinking that Tang Xiaorou was still important for her studies.
But the other’s words clearly showed she just wanted to watch her make a fool of herself, so she absolutely couldn’t let her laugh at her expense, she had to prove herself.
Standing a few meters away from Tang Xiaorou, she said coldly: “Heh, I don’t need you to mind my business.”
Tang Xiaorou shrugged: “Good, hope you can still be this stubborn when the next report card comes out.”
“We’ll see about that.” Su Yingying absolutely didn’t believe her next test scores would drop, after all, she had been sailing smoothly through life since childhood, feeling that everything wasn’t that complicated, and there would always be a way to solve things if she wanted to.
The mock exam wouldn’t be too far away, with four or five tests happening within several months, so the verbal “bet” between them wouldn’t take long to be settled.
After speaking, Su Yingying returned to her seat planning to take out her papers and review, determined to show Tang Xiaorou. However, from Tang Xiaorou’s perspective, she didn’t seem to persist for long, thanks to having the biggest hindrance, Jiang Xinxin, beside her.
Yu Chuyao came back from outside at this time, carrying two water cups. Tang Xiaorou only then noticed that her water cup had been taken out by Yu Chuyao at some point.
“You seem very happy.” Unlike the leisure and ease during class, Tang Xiaorou now appeared particularly excited, as if something that would spike adrenaline was about to happen.
“Yes indeed.” Tang Xiaorou propped her chin, with her other hand’s index finger drawing random symbols in the air: “Classmate Chuyao, you better study hard, or you’ll miss out on the fun.”
How did it come back to her? Yu Chuyao was confused, of course not knowing what had happened between Tang Xiaorou and Su Yingying earlier.
“But I am studying hard!” Yu Chuyao declared her efforts, even working on English vocabulary which she used to hate and which had dragged down her total score the most in the college entrance exam.
Tang Xiaorou knew all this of course, affectionately reaching out to pat her head and helping to straighten her slightly crooked headband from running around.
