Chapter 24: Words Left Unsaid
***
Yu Chuyao hadn’t expected that she would cut off her appearance-sealing hairstyle so quickly.
Nor did she expect that Tang Xiaorou, who cut off her bangs, would have other ways to reattach them.
Girls are really amazing, aren’t they!
After removing this thick layer of disguise, Yu Chuyao walking together with Tang Xiaorou became a beautiful sight to behold just by standing on the street, without doing anything else.
So much so that wherever the two went, people couldn’t help but stop to admire or turn their heads to gaze at them.
Although they had plenty of places they could visit together in half a day, considering that Yu Chuyao knew she had to return home early after contacting her mother, they didn’t do much else. After getting their hair done, they just walked around for a while before preparing to part ways.
Tang Xiaorou wasn’t in a hurry; in three days, she had done enough. She believed she had already built up a good impression in Yu Chuyao’s heart, enough to replace her previous image of a foolish fawning admirer.
This time, neither of them accompanied the other home, they were just preparing to part ways at the intersection closest to school.
“I’ll make several more of these headbands,” before leaving, Tang Xiaorou patted Yu Chuyao’s head, where the large headband reminded Yu Chuyao that she had now put the seal back on, returning to her nobody status.
You know what, the hairstyle after cutting the bangs really gave Yu Chuyao some confidence. Though a bit uncomfortable at first, she quickly adapted and could walk and chat normally with Tang Xiaorou.
“You’re troubling yourself…” Actually, one was enough, after all, it wasn’t real hair, and even if it got dirty, she could wash it at night and put it aside to use again the next morning.
But no matter how much she declined, Tang Xiaorou insisted on making more for her, saying these things didn’t cost much money.
After seeing Tang Xiaorou’s family background, Yu Chuyao felt somewhat relieved, thinking that perhaps the amount she put on her meal card each month wasn’t even as much as Tang Xiaorou’s daily allowance…
“It’s nothing, just a small gesture.” Waving her hand, Tang Xiaorou turned to leave, but not before reminding her: “See you tomorrow morning, I’ll bring you food again.”
“No, if you keep doing this, I’ll feel uncomfortable.” She had been holding back these words for more than a day, having Tang Xiaorou bring her food for these two days made her feel like she was taking advantage.
Although Tang Xiaorou was trying to get close to her, she wasn’t like Su Yingying, who only knew how to take without giving.
“I see…” Tang Xiaorou understood something. She understood Yu Chuyao; although such girls might appear very insecure daily, they actually had their own principles and self-respect.
She didn’t mind continuing to spend money on Yu Chuyao, but that didn’t mean the other party was necessarily willing in their heart.
Such a reaction was also what she was happy to see. Only this way could she feel that the girl she was pursuing wasn’t another Su Yingying.
“Mm, I got it, I’ll have another way later.” With a grin, Tang Xiaorou made her stance clear, saying she would give Yu Chuyao a satisfactory answer.
Yu Chuyao could only half-believe it.
On her way home, Yu Chuyao felt that this headband really had some effect; after getting used to it, you would even forget its existence. She couldn’t help but admire Tang Xiaorou’s idea, it was brilliant.
She really did like her current appearance too. Having become a girl, who wouldn’t want to become pretty and beautiful? Who doesn’t like beautiful girls?
This disguise probably wouldn’t need to be maintained for long; there would be an opportunity for her to lift this cover.
Returning to this simple and even somewhat shabby home, she didn’t dislike it here though. Although the conditions weren’t very good, the care and protection her family gave her was already enough.
She wasn’t a greedy person, otherwise she would have become unrestrained under Tang Xiaorou’s pursuit long ago.
Today her mother said she would come home early to cook for her, which was why she declined Tang Xiaorou’s suggestion to continue hanging out. She thought this good girl image shouldn’t contradict her previous image, right?
Just as she opened the door, her mother was, as always, dozing in a chair by the doorway, instantly becoming alert at the sound of the door opening. She quickly got up to greet Yu Chuyao, thinking to help her with the clothes she was taking off.
“Who did you go out to play with today~”
She always felt that her mother treated her like some silly, foolish child. To the point where she never understood whether this was just her character setting or if her parents were simply too doting on her.
“With Tang Xiaorou, the friend I just got close with these past couple of days.” Anyway, telling her mother wouldn’t matter since she wouldn’t know exactly who it was, so there was no harm in explaining clearly.
“I see.” Her mother indeed seemed to be just asking casually, continuing to help Yu Chuyao arrange her clothes.
However, when Yu Chuyao had changed her shoes and was about to walk inside, passing by her mother, her mother noticed something unusual.
She immediately stopped Yu Chuyao: “Wait.”
Hm? The sudden command surprised Yu Chuyao, and just as she was thinking her mother knew something about Tang Xiaorou and was preparing to explain, her mother reached out and removed the fake headband from her head.
The revealed hairstyle and appearance made her mother draw in a sharp breath.
“What’s wrong, Mom?” Yu Chuyao thought indeed mothers know their daughters best, spotting the differences on her with just a few glances, over ten years of nurturing wasn’t for nothing.
Carefully examining Yu Chuyao’s face, her mother’s expression showed an indescribable bitterness.
Yu Chuyao was completely confused, what kind of feeling was this exactly? She certainly couldn’t understand.
“Who cut your hair?” Her mother’s question held no blame, the questioning tone wasn’t even very obvious: “That Tang Xiaorou?”
“Mm.” Yu Chuyao nodded weakly.
“She was thoughtful to prepare this for you.” Her mother looked at her, then examined the fake headband in her hand: “Well, it’s good for girls to dress up a bit.”
It was somewhat puzzling; Yu Chuyao couldn’t quite understand what emotion her mother was expressing. Anger? Relief? Or what?
“Go to your room and change clothes.” Her mother called for her to tidy herself up, preparing for dinner. Yu Chuyao quickly nodded, then left the living room.
The moment Yu Chuyao returned to her room and closed the door, her mother’s previously calm expression turned to worry.
She quietly walked to the cabinet, took out the family’s only family photo, which from the date wasn’t too old, just something from the past two years.
But for some reason, her gaze kept lingering on the girl in the photo, that is, Yu Chuyao.
“There’s only a few years left anyway.” Letting out a soft sigh, her mother continued: “Really looking less and less alike.”
