Chapter 19: Enemies Meet on a Narrow Path
***
The two substantial lunch portions that Tang Xiaorou brought, Yu Chuyao ate completely clean, following the principle of not wasting anything.
By the time she took her last bite, her entire stomach felt so full that she felt like if someone were to gently press on her belly, everything would come right back up.
At this moment, Tang Xiaorou thoughtfully took out a strip of digestive tablets from her pocket and placed them in Yu Chuyao’s hand.
“Take some of these, I’m worried your stomach might hurt during afternoon classes after you wake up.” She hadn’t expected Yu Chuyao to be so obedient, eating everything without leaving a single bit, this was much easier than dealing with Su Yingying, that picky young lady who was always refusing to eat this or that.
She had prepared the digestive tablets beforehand because she assumed Yu Chuyao came from a poor background and would likely treasure any food given to her. She didn’t expect they would actually be needed so soon.
“So full~” Yu Chuyao leaned on the desk, radiating happiness as she unscrewed her water bottle and took a big gulp, making her feel even more satisfied.
“Eat less at a time, eating so much at once isn’t good for your digestive system.”
Then you should have brought less food! Yu Chuyao thought. But out loud, she properly replied: “I’ll be more careful next time.”
The two of them hadn’t eaten quickly, and by the time they finished, other classmates who had eaten in the cafeteria were gradually returning. Seeing this, Yu Chuyao felt she couldn’t just be like a little pig who only knew how to eat and do nothing else.
So when her stomach felt a bit better, she picked up Tang Xiaorou’s two lunch boxes and volunteered to wash them.
“I’ll go wash these.”
Not giving Tang Xiaorou a chance to refuse, Yu Chuyao had already squeezed past her and darted out of the classroom, leaving the scene.
The little one is still a bit afraid of me, always so reserved when interacting with me.
Tang Xiaorou chuckled, mentally evaluating Yu Chuyao’s attitude towards her.
Actually, she hadn’t expected to win over Yu Chuyao so quickly. After all, it had only been just over a day since her reincarnation, and being able to change Yu Chuyao’s attitude towards her this much was already beyond her expectations.
At least she was still accepting her kindness, and although she always wanted to repay her, isn’t this the attitude normal people should have?
Not everyone was like Su Yingying and Jiang Xinxin, who only knew how to take from her but never acknowledged her efforts and sincerity.
Yu Chuyao carried the lunch boxes through the stream of returning students, looking somewhat out of place.
There weren’t many places to wash things, and the bathroom entrance was definitely not an option. These were for eating, and even if Tang Xiaorou didn’t mind, she felt she would need to slap herself twice if she washed them there.
Then she remembered there was a dedicated sink for cleaning water bottles and tea cups at the water station, so she decided to go there instead.
The washing didn’t take long; Yu Chuyao wasn’t completely inexperienced in housework, and it only took a few minutes to clean both boxes.
While drying them and walking back to the classroom, she hadn’t gone far before running into two people she didn’t want to see.
“Today is so annoying, all the hot food in the cafeteria was taken.”
“Right? All the dishes with lots of meat were gone, only tiny portions left that were gone after a few bites, not even enough to go with rice!”
“How about tonight we report going to the bathroom right before class ends, then head to the cafeteria early?”
“That doesn’t seem right…”
If there were people Yu Chuyao least wanted to see during this time, it would definitely be Su Yingying and Jiang Xinxin without a doubt.
From her experience reading novels and her observations of Su Yingying these past few days, the original plot of this book should be about a delicate beauty’s journey from high school through university and into society, where she eventually succeeds.
During this time, the female protagonist would encounter various male characters who fall for her, experience various misunderstandings, suffer persecution from various antagonists, but ultimately win in the end through her abilities and beauty, while everyone who opposed her would meet bad ends.
Anyway, it was quite illogical, the kind of female-oriented fiction that might be interesting if you turn off your brain. She had no idea how her friend back then had found such a book to give her.
But reading it was one thing, actually being transported into the book was another matter entirely.
From the original female protagonist’s perspective in the book, it probably felt quite satisfying. After all, many people pursued her, many people liked her, and even when persecuted she could always turn danger into safety.
But from an observer’s perspective, it’s no wonder some people liked to persecute her. Because this kind of white moonlight who likes to string people along, was really quite…
Anyway, Yu Chuyao didn’t like such people.
Carrying the lunch boxes, she walked along the edge of the corridor. Although the flow of people had decreased, she should be able to slip by unnoticed by the two of them.
With this mindset, Yu Chuyao quietly walked along the side.
But she seemed to have underestimated their obsession with today’s lunch.
With just a glance to the side, they precisely recognized what Yu Chuyao was carrying in her hands. That thing had always been in Tang Xiaorou’s possession, waving in front of their faces every day, so even though they had never looked at it carefully, they had some impression of it.
So before Yu Chuyao could walk past them a few steps, the two turned around and called out to her.
“Wait!”
Yu Chuyao wasn’t stupid, she definitely knew they were calling her, but since they hadn’t called her by name, she pretended not to hear anything in the corridor. Her feet immediately picked up speed, trying to blend into the crowd and leave quickly.
But with her short arms and legs, she simply couldn’t outpace Su Yingying and Jiang Xinxin.
“Didn’t you hear us calling you?”
In a few strides, the two appeared in front of Yu Chuyao. They blocked her path so well that she couldn’t even slip past them sideways.
No choice but to face it head-on.
Believing she was staring at the two with a firm and fierce gaze, Yu Chuyao thought she couldn’t lose in terms of presence, but unfortunately her bangs basically covered her eyes completely. While she could see clearly, they could barely see her eyes in return.
“Is there something wrong?”
“Who let you carry these lunch boxes!”
Jiang Xinxin reached out to grab them, after all, it was because of the lunch boxes’ owner that the two of them had suffered greatly during lunch today.
Yu Chuyao wasn’t stupid either, how could she just let someone snatch them away? She freed one hand and hid the lunch boxes behind her back.
“Classmate, although I don’t understand why you want these empty lunch boxes,” seeing the crowd, Yu Chuyao tried to raise her voice as much as possible: “but forcefully taking something that isn’t yours isn’t right, is it?”
The surrounding gazes were immediately drawn to them.
And this was exactly the result Yu Chuyao wanted.
Aren’t you just being bold because of Tang Xiaorou? But even if Tang Xiaorou was just temporarily plotting something, she wasn’t openly favoring them on the surface, so what was there to be afraid of?
Yu Chuyao’s single sentence put Jiang Xinxin in a very awkward position, her outstretched hand frozen in mid-air, neither able to continue reaching nor withdraw.
“Classmate Yu, these aren’t your things either.” At this point, the main character Su Yingying finally spoke up, maintaining a calm and composed manner, with much better psychological quality than Jiang Xinxin: “We’re just worried that Classmate Tang Xiaorou’s things might get lost.”
The way she said it made it sound like Yu Chuyao was a thief.
