Chapter 18: Not Eating Your Food for Free
***
Being stared at like this made Jiang Xinxin very uncomfortable.
She immediately retorted: “What are you looking at, you didn’t even queue up”
However, few people responded to her, because everyone had heard what the cafeteria lady said earlier.
Want to get takeout early like Tang Xiaorou? Got to pay extra~
High school allowances were generally not much, far less flexible than college. If they had to choose between paying extra and queuing… queuing was probably more worth it.
But was Tang Xiaorou short on money?
Not at all.
Let alone the fact that she was an only daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Tang’s doting on her was extraordinary, always giving her whatever she wanted since childhood.
Not to mention their family was well-off, her pocket money alone was several times that of her classmates.
Therefore, paying this extra amount wasn’t a big deal for her.
As for why she didn’t do this for Su Yingying before…
It’s complicated. Su Yingying and Jiang Xinxin’s expenses were far greater than Yu Chuyao, not to mention having to constantly find ways to please them. Even with money, one had to think long-term, right?
“Even if you pay extra, you can’t use it.” Tang Xiaorou gave her a side-eye, just short of saying ‘go get treatment if you’re sick.’
Money might not be omnipotent, but it could occasionally provide some conveniences.
That one sentence shut Jiang Xinxin up. If nothing else, regarding having money or not, perhaps everyone had nothing to say about Tang Xiaorou.
“Then have you forgotten about Yingying? You used to buy food for Yingying.”
Before, they both enjoyed Tang Xiaorou’s benefits, leisurely walking to the cafeteria to find their meals ready, and all according to their individual tastes.
Yesterday, because of Tang Xiaorou, they almost had to return for noon rest without finishing lunch, otherwise they’d definitely be hungry in the afternoon.
Is this person really so stupid that I need to correct her one thing at a time about my disgust for them and desire to stay away from them both?
No wonder Tang Xiaorou had a headache. The novel was set up this way, Jiang Xinxin was just a character meant to highlight the protagonist, so being brainless was normal.
“If you want to eat, buy it yourself. I don’t have time for you two.” After saying this, she prepared to find a place to pack the food into her own lunchbox, then take it back to Yu Chuyao.
However, Jiang Xinxin didn’t believe it. Seeing the food in Tang Xiaorou’s hands, she started making unreasonable arguments again.
“Look at this! What you bought is clearly what Yingying likes to eat.”
Su Yingying also glanced enviously at the food, but to maintain her high-and-mighty persona’s dignity, she consciously remained unmoved.
Tang Xiaorou was even more speechless.
Perhaps only she knew how picky Su Yingying was about food. Too fatty? Won’t eat it, greasy. Too oily? Won’t eat it, causes acne and weight gain. Cauliflower? Won’t eat it, tasteless… and so on.
Damn, this kind of person should be thrown into the mountains to experience some hardcore survival.
She used to care about these things, but now she couldn’t care less whether they liked it or not.
Jiang Xinxin was just being presumptuous. Tang Xiaorou had merely bought according to her usual habits, what did it have to do with Su Yingying’s preferences? So many people bought similar meals from this window, were they all buying for you two?
Ignoring them both, Tang Xiaorou carried her lunchbox away on her own.
Yu Chuyao sat in the classroom, watching birds fly past the window, her thoughts somewhat indescribable.
Why… because it seemed there was a couple being intimate in the classroom next door… and they were by the window too. From her back row seat with the window open, she could hear them.
This young couple… couldn’t they be more reserved?
At least Yu Chuyao had been through three months of college baptism. Regarding such scenes, college seniors would do this in the small woods every night, and she had seen plenty while passing by.
Otherwise, she would have lost composure and fled the scene long ago.
Weren’t high school students explicitly forbidden from dating? Yet they dared to be intimate in the classroom, not afraid of being “caught” by teachers.
While thinking this, she heard footsteps in the corridor. Since there were barely any people in the teaching building at this time, it sounded particularly clear.
Looking back, she saw Tang Xiaorou jogging back, holding two lunchboxes, which she placed on her and Yu Chuyao’s desks.
“How did you get back so fast!” She remembered Tang Xiaorou had only been gone for less than 5 minutes since leaving, even running to and from the cafeteria would take at least 3 minutes.
“Don’t worry about that.” Tang Xiaorou smiled as she opened the lunchboxes, revealing steaming rice bowls inside: “If you get tired of cafeteria food later, I can get you something from outside too.”
You really are quite capable. Yu Chuyao couldn’t help but comment, apparently every school had someone who could do things ordinary students couldn’t.
Two meals, one with braised pork and fish-flavored shredded pork with cauliflower and garlic stems, another with stir-fried chili pork and twice-cooked pork plus vegetables and shredded carrots. The portions were generous, the lunchboxes bigger than her face were packed full, almost overflowing.
It left Yu Chuyao stunned.
Even in her previous high school, meals were just one or two dishes with rice, enough for 7-8 yuan. The meal before her looked like it would cost no less than 12 yuan.
Clutching her meal card, according to her budget, she only had an allowance of 6 yuan per meal…
Suddenly exceeding by double made her feel awkward.
“What’s wrong? Which one do you want?”
“Are you sure we can finish this much?”
With her petite frame, her appetite wasn’t big. One full lunchbox would be enough for two meals.
“It’s fine, just eat as much as you can.” Tang Xiaorou had her own considerations.
If she remembered correctly, Yu Chuyao’s family wasn’t well-off in high school, so every meal was very simple and just enough to get by.
This wasn’t good. Not eating well or enough could easily lead to stomach problems and such. Saving money this way was somewhat counterproductive.
So she needed to nurture Yu Chuyao to be fair and plump, she couldn’t let her suffer.
Yu Chuyao looked at the food, somewhat craving the braised pork and fish-flavored shredded pork. She wasn’t picky about food, and all these meat and vegetable combinations were things she liked.
“Then, I’ll treat you to a meal later.”
Though it was expensive, since it had been bought for her, not eating a bite would be even more wasteful.
At most she’d save up a bit later to treat Tang Xiaorou back.
But hearing this, Tang Xiaorou quickly waved her hands: “That won’t do.”
But seeing the confusion and doubt in Yu Chuyao’s eyes, she understood the other person wouldn’t accept her kindness without compensation, so she still needed to give Yu Chuyao something she could do in return.
So she thought for a moment and explained: “I don’t really need help with buying meals, if you really want to help me, I’ll tell you how during the weekend.”
Although Yu Chuyao didn’t understand what she was up to, at least this way she wouldn’t be eating for free, making her feel a bit better.
Picking up her chopsticks and taking a bite of rice, she had to admit the high school cafeteria food here tasted quite good, at least to Yu Chuyao.
Yu Chuyao ate happily, and Tang Xiaorou watched contentedly.
The plan to lure the beautiful girl to be her girlfriend progressed another step~
