Chapter 17: A Small Incident During Lunch
***
Having someone difficult to ignore beside her, Yu Chuyao felt uncomfortable throughout the entire morning classes.
Although, Tang Xiaorou was indeed excellent at studying, often able to point out which problems she couldn’t solve or where she made mistakes with just a casual glance.
But! This also proved that when sitting together, Tang Xiaorou’s attention was mostly focused on her!
The pressure was immense, Yu Chuyao was afraid that if she showed any unfavorable traits, it would reveal that she wasn’t the same nobody as before, thereby exposing her transmigration into the novel.
Tang Xiaorou felt the same way. Using helping Yu Chuyao study as an excuse, she moved to sit behind her, but in reality, with her current academic level, she was far from being able to teach Yu Chuyao. After all, being away from college entrance exam-oriented education for so many years, even though her grades were good back then, she had forgotten most of it now and needed time to recover.
However, similarly, Yu Chuyao had forgotten even more, since her grades were just average to begin with.
This resulted in both of their skill levels maintaining at a perfectly balanced standard, where neither could detect anything unusual.
Finally surviving through the morning, when the lunch bell rang, thunderous footsteps once again shook the entire building. High school cafeteria was basically all about competing.
It wasn’t that there wasn’t enough food; as long as you were willing to queue, you wouldn’t end up with leftovers.
However, the school cafeteria had far too few seats. One grade level would be fine, but with three grade levels having lunch break simultaneously, it became cramped. Unlike university where students could freely bring their meals, most times they had to hold their bowls and wait a while on the side. Fortunately, due to the tight schedule and heavy workload in high school, everyone ate quickly.
Seeing this, Yu Chuyao developed a headache.
With her small and thin frame, she couldn’t run fast, and there was no way she could squeeze past those boys who were easily 170-180cm tall, or the girls who were half a head taller than her.
Thinking about the limited funds in her meal card, she could only shake her head helplessly, giving up on the competition. She slowly packed up her things before preparing to go buy lunch.
However, at this moment, a pair of hands grabbed her shoulders from behind, suddenly pulling her back, startling her into crying out.
“Ah!”
Being pushed down onto the seat, Yu Chuyao looked up in confusion, seeing Tang Xiaorou’s smooth and beautiful jawline above her.
She watched as Tang Xiaorou gazed forward, waiting until most people had left before slowly saying: “Don’t rush, just wait in the classroom, I’ll go buy lunch and bring it back.”
This person seems to have a strong sense of possessiveness, how come she even wants to manage how she eats.
Yu Chuyao protested, she wasn’t disabled or unable to walk, why did she need someone to deliver food to her mouth?
“I can go buy food myself, there shouldn’t be any problems!”
“That’s true in theory.” Tang Xiaorou explained with a smile: “But do you think you can still get in line if you go buy food now?”
Well, she could take it slow, after all, food is essential, she couldn’t spend the rest of the day hungry.
High school study was also mental work, going half a day without replenishment would easily lead to drowsiness and fatigue, affecting study efficiency.
Although the transmigration made her lose her university life, it also gave her a second chance to improve herself. If she could take the exam again and get into a better school, she would be happy to do so.
“Just stay here, let me go.” Tang Xiaorou took out her special lunch box from her backpack and ran out.
The cafeteria was packed with people, quite lively. Each counter had at least a dozen people in line, and even with high efficiency, swiping cards, paying, and selecting food would take at least 10-20 seconds per person, which meant those at the back would have to wait 5-6 minutes before their turn.
Among the many people queuing were the disgruntled Jiang Xinxin and Su Yingying.
“Why is the queue moving so slowly! If we don’t get our food soon, we’ll have to go back for noon break right after eating.” Jiang Xinxin’s voice was full of complaints, constantly glancing at the slowly moving crowd in front, wishing she could rush to the front.
But she knew the consequences of doing that.
“There’s no choice, we’ll just have to eat quickly.” Su Yingying was also feeling uncomfortable at this point, inevitably beginning to miss the times when someone used to help buy lunch.
That person who used to buy lunch was naturally Tang Xiaorou.
A qualified pursuer, or rather a “simp,” naturally wouldn’t let their goddess endure hunger and wait in line for food. Before lunch, she would be the fastest to run as soon as class ended, rushing to the cafeteria with a group of boys, usually being among the first batch to get food.
Tang Xiaorou was also the type who was best at pleasing people and building relationships, so she quickly became familiar with many cafeteria aunties, who would give special care to this cute and cheerful girl when serving food.
Even her “occasionally” shaking hands became steady.
“This Tang Xiaorou, how could she suddenly…” Jiang Xinxin continued complaining, even placing the blame on Tang Xiaorou. However, being in public, Su Yingying immediately realized her slip of tongue and quickly covered her mouth, preventing her from saying anything that could be used against them.
It was only at times like these that they could remember Tang Xiaorou’s past kindness. However, these kinds of things were rarely mentioned in novels, after all, who would care about the small, detailed things that the villainess did for the protagonist who stood in the way of love? The focus was always on the major events.
While the two were still waiting in line, a figure ran in at that moment, going straight to the counter, smiling and asking the cafeteria aunty: “Aunty, is what we talked about this morning ready?”
“Oh, it’s Rourou, of course it’s packed and ready for you, just take it.” The aunty pointed to two packed meals in bags placed beside the counter.
This was what Tang Xiaorou had arranged during breakfast, paying extra to have the aunty prepare lunch in advance, because she knew she would be late coming to get it while explaining things to Yu Chuyao.
The food was still hot, with two meat dishes and two vegetable dishes, the aroma alone made people who had been studying all morning feel hungry.
“Alright, then I’ll take these.” She had paid in the morning, so there was no need to delay, she just picked them up and prepared to return.
However, at this moment, there was still a discordant voice that stopped her.
“Hey!” As she passed by Su Yingying and Jiang Xinxin, Jiang Xinxin shouted at her: “Why do you get to take food without queuing!”
She thought her words would surely gain consensus from a lot of people, who would join her in criticizing Tang Xiaorou.
However…
When Tang Xiaorou heard her shout, she had already run several steps away. She slowly stopped, turned back, and gave her a look like she was looking at an idiot.
