Chapter 15: Meticulous Care
***
As Tang Xiaorou said, having breakfast before morning self-study meant that when classmates rushed off to eat after self-study ended, Yu Chuyao could peacefully lay on her desk and continue napping.
A full 40 minutes of rest time, openly undisturbed, it was delightful any way you thought about it.
Therefore, Yu Chuyao had a very comfortable nap, to the extent that she didn’t need anyone to wake her up before class; she naturally opened her eyes when people were about to return.
However, as soon as she opened her eyes, she noticed the surrounding classmates staring at her with a peculiar gaze.
What’s wrong? What’s wrong? It was just a nap! Before she fell asleep, she saw quite a few others doing the same thing, not eating and laying down to sleep!
“Why are you all looking at me like this?” Yu Chuyao asked weakly, and with her bangs covering her eyes, she truly looked pitiable enough that people couldn’t bring themselves to blame her.
Originally, no one would have paid any attention to this nobody in the class, but now that she was connected to Tang Xiaorou, gradually more people began to take notice.
“Yu Chuyao,” others wouldn’t develop the same thoughts about her as Tang Xiaorou did, they simply wanted to remind her: “Did you forget something?”
Huh? Was there something she needed to remember?
It wasn’t that she was forgetful; without memories, it was like this, having to explore and discover all key information herself, which was far more complicated than playing any open-world exploration game.
The girl next to her quietly spoke: “It’s our group’s duty day today, and though you’re usually only asked to clean the blackboard, you shouldn’t have forgotten even that, right?”
What?
Clean the blackboard? Are you sure you want me to do it now? Yu Chuyao incredulously looked down at her current body. Even if she raised her hand above her head and stood on tiptoes, she might not be able to reach the top of the blackboard.
Are you sure asking someone like her to clean the blackboard isn’t just making things difficult?
To be honest, Yu Chuyao thought of one possibility. Although cleaning the blackboard wasn’t physically demanding, the chalk dust that arose from cleaning could be harmful when inhaled.
Moreover, this task usually needed to be done after every class, and coming and going like this was no less tiring than cleaning the classroom for half a day.
Well then, was it because the original nobody was easy to bully that they gave her this task?
If that’s the case, she should properly protest.
Just as she was about to take a sip of water to clear her throat and start speaking, another person’s voice interrupted her.
“Thankfully there’s Tang Xiaorou, otherwise we’d get scolded by the teacher again for no one cleaning the blackboard today.”
What? Yu Chuyao finally looked up and saw Tang Xiaorou standing at the podium, holding an eraser in one hand and a wet cloth in the other, carefully cleaning the blackboard.
One dry wipe followed by one wet wipe, and soon the blackboard full of English words was cleaned thoroughly. If not for the remaining wet marks, it would have looked no different from a brand new one.
Tang Xiaorou’s perfectionist personality was actually quite special, only putting effort into things others found puzzling, like now — she wouldn’t put down the cleaning supplies until everything was spotlessly clean.
This situation was unexpected for Yu Chuyao as well. While she was peacefully napping undisturbed, who would have thought that her original task had been completed by Tang Xiaorou.
Really, was it necessary for her to go to such lengths?
Just as Tang Xiaorou threw the eraser onto the teacher’s desk and dusted off her chalk-covered hands, she made eye contact with Yu Chuyao.
The former smiled slightly, as if what she had done was merely her duty. The latter’s face turned completely red, as if she had become a lazy good-for-nothing, feeling guilty at being discovered.
When Tang Xiaorou came down and was about to go to the bathroom to wash her hands, she had only walked a few steps out the door when her clothes were tugged by a small hand.
Tang Xiaorou turned around to see Yu Chuyao standing behind her, head lowered, holding onto her, thoughts unknown.
“What’s wrong?” Tang Xiaorou smiled slightly.
“You don’t need to do so much for me.” She was just someone who had crossed over from outside the book, and originally just an unnamed minor character in the story. Why would she receive such care from the villainess who could influence the plot?
The more Tang Xiaorou acted this way, the more guilty Yu Chuyao felt, because she believed she shouldn’t be moved by this help and end up falling for Tang Xiaorou.
And now she couldn’t do anything in return, just accepting someone else’s kindness, this wasn’t her style.
But Tang Xiaorou wanted to raise her hand to pat Yu Chuyao’s head to comfort her. However, looking at her chalk-covered hands, she helplessly lowered them again.
“Don’t think too much about it. Helping you is also helping myself.”
She had awakened too late, and having such a chance to start over, she hoped she could achieve a better ending, one that would not only do justice to her past self but also to the loved ones she could save this time.
She hoped her choice was right, that she could find redemption through Yu Chuyao.
This was also the peace of mind she gained from her.
However, both harbored their own thoughts and had their own little secrets that couldn’t be spoken aloud.
“Then, don’t go. Class is about to start.” Yu Chuyao pulled out a wet handkerchief from behind her. It must have been something she carried with her, dampened with water from her water bottle.
Tang Xiaorou hadn’t expected this turn of events, so she was somewhat dazed when accepting the handkerchief.
But Yu Chuyao returned to the classroom right after handing over the handkerchief, leaving Tang Xiaorou standing alone in the hallway, lost in thought.
Looking down at the handkerchief, a pink one without any extra decorative patterns, with irregular white thread hemming that proved it was probably hand-sewn by Yu Chuyao’s mother.
Thinking of this, Tang Xiaorou’s eyes suddenly widened, filled with surprise and joy.
Hehe! What a score!
Using the dampened handkerchief to wipe the chalk dust off her hands, Tang Xiaorou no longer needed to wash them, but she still stood there considering whether to go to the bathroom to wash the dirty handkerchief.
At this moment, the homeroom teacher approached from the opposite direction, forcing her to put that thought on hold and postpone the idea.
After entering the classroom, the homeroom teacher didn’t rush to assign tasks for the next class, but instead stood on the podium and shouted: “Quiet.”
Despite her young age, appearing only in her twenties, actually being able to be a homeroom teacher for a college entrance exam class required some real ability.
Seeing how the previously noisy classroom immediately fell silent at this command, Tang Xiaorou also returned to her seat during this quietness.
If she wasn’t mistaken, what was about to happen was something she had been anticipating since her rebirth yesterday.
“Our class needs to slightly adjust the seating arrangement. I’ve already arranged it on this new seating chart. If you have any objections, bring them up with me directly.”
