Chapter 13: Differential Treatment
***
The teachers’ tolerance towards Tang Xiaorou had reached an extreme level.
As someone who consistently ranked among the top students in the school, almost no teacher would choose to give her a hard time. At most, they would often advise her not to focus all her attention on pursuing Su Yingying.
After all, if she could maintain stable grades while pursuing someone so intensely, imagine what she could achieve if she focused entirely on studying!
Unfortunately, it never had any effect, and the teachers could only give up, fearing that Tang Xiaorou might become rebellious and do the opposite out of spite. The school needed good grades too, didn’t they? The more good students they had, the more justification they would have for recruiting more good students.
“Oh, teacher, it’s not me, it’s Yu Chuyao,” Tang Xiaorou pointed at Yu Chuyao, who was already lying on her desk: “She’s not feeling well, I suggest…”
“Oh, I see, then she can rest in the classroom today,” the homeroom teacher nodded, following along with Tang Xiaorou’s words, essentially agreeing to her request.
However, unexpectedly, Tang Xiaorou shook her head upon hearing this, indicating this wasn’t what she wanted.
“What I mean is, maybe Yu Chuyao shouldn’t have to participate in the running exercises from now on. After all, she’s quite delicate, and forced running might not necessarily build up her health.”
Every year, students got injured during running exercises, either from falling and getting trampled mid-run, or fainting from exhaustion.
Yu Chuyao looked physically unhealthy, studying from early morning to late night, and having to endure nearly a kilometer of running exercise. Who knows when problems might arise.
To prevent future issues, she wanted to nip this possibility in the bud!
“Huh?” The homeroom teacher was stunned. One day would be fine, but to skip it entirely from now on… that seemed a bit unreasonable, right? Running exercise had been a school tradition for many years, and even during the college entrance exam preparation period, it couldn’t be skipped.
Not just the homeroom teacher, but even Su Yingying in the front row dropped her vocabulary book when she heard this.
Well done, Tang Xiaorou, showing favoritism, aren’t we?
Su Yingying also hated running exercises. Earlier, she had also asked Tang Xiaorou, who was pursuing her wholeheartedly, to help persuade the teachers to exempt her from this tedious running routine.
But unfortunately, it wasn’t yet the crucial third year of high school then, and the teachers couldn’t confirm the relationship between the two, plus they weren’t as lenient with Tang Xiaorou then, so nothing came of it in the end.
The key was that Tang Xiaorou herself hadn’t agreed at the time, looking worried and saying with apparent concern: “Yingying, running helps exercise the body. Sitting in your seat all day without exercise makes it easy to gain weight.”
Hah! I can see you just didn’t try hard enough! And you called that caring about me! Now why aren’t you “caring” about Yu Chuyao the same way, and start asking for leave for her!
Thinking about this, Su Yingying’s face immediately fell, and even her movement to pick up the book became slower.
It must be Tang Xiaorou trying to provoke her, tempting her with the kind of treatment she never gave her before. It must be that.
Deeply influenced by Jiang Xinxin, Su Yingying was convinced that Tang Xiaorou didn’t truly like Yu Chuyao. How could this short girl who always covered her face with bangs and looked gloomy possibly be Tang Xiaorou’s type?
Not to be conceited, but compared to Yu Chuyao’s current image in everyone’s eyes, there was simply no comparison.
But this was exactly the effect Tang Xiaorou wanted. She wasn’t in a hurry to dress up Yu Chuyao, what if someone else started having designs on Yu Chuyao like she did?
The little one was pure-minded and definitely wouldn’t understand love between girls. What if some handsome guy with good conditions came along to pursue her? Wouldn’t that just unnecessarily add competition for herself?
While she had the advantage of being the same gender and could get close, when it came to views on love, she would need to gradually change Yu Chuyao’s perspective.
Actually, her worry was completely unnecessary… how could Yu Chuyao possibly like men…
However, Yu Chuyao was already half-asleep at this point and hadn’t noticed the situation around her. Under Tang Xiaorou’s protection, even this sneaky napping was tacitly permitted by the homeroom teacher.
In the end, the homeroom teacher nodded in agreement. Otherwise, if Tang Xiaorou kept bringing this up every few days, it would surely lead to other students following suit. Better to agree this time and have a reason to refuse others next time.
Do you have grades as good as Tang Xiaorou? You want to come and bargain with me?
As the running exercise bell rang, no matter how unwilling, students had to put down their textbooks and go out to the playground for running exercises.
In just 3 minutes, the teaching building that had been so noisy with students reciting that it could have blown off the roof became so quiet that you could clearly hear the sound of wind blowing leaves outside.
This completely eliminated any resistance from Yu Chuyao, who was almost fully asleep, and she went completely still.
Seeing this, Tang Xiaorou just smiled slightly, sat down in the seat next to her, and casually pulled out a novel from the drawer of one of the students with poor grades in the back row, reading while waiting.
With only two people in the entire classroom, it seemed somewhat cozy.
The running exercise would last quite a while. Assembly and dismissal would take about 10 minutes, the running itself another 15-20 minutes, basically impossible to finish in less than half an hour.
Plus, the playground was several hundred meters away from the teaching building, and the exercise broadcast couldn’t be heard from here, plenty of time for Yu Chuyao to get a nice nap.
Indeed, 3 months of graduation vacation and 3 months of college life were enough for a graduate to wear away their high school habits and become lazy and relaxed.
Therefore, our little classmate Yu Chuyao needed some time to readjust to this high school life that had suddenly extended by several more months.
The same went for Tang Xiaorou.
Seeing that it was about time, Tang Xiaorou wasn’t in a hurry to wake Yu Chuyao up, knowing how unpleasant it would be to wake up suddenly from being disturbed.
But this didn’t mean she had no other methods.
Taking advantage of the still-warm breakfast she had brought, she opened it and placed it in the direction Yu Chuyao’s sleeping face was turned, gently blowing air, sending both the warm breeze and the breakfast aroma towards Yu Chuyao’s little face.
Yu Chuyao, who had been sleeping comfortably, was soon attracted by this smell. Her little nose couldn’t help but sniff a few times, and her squinting eyes developed a gap, slowly opening.
“Smells so good…” her voice was hoarse, and although still sleepy, Yu Chuyao’s spirit was much better than before.
Tang Xiaorou quickly brushed away the bangs stuck to her face and said gently: “Eat quickly, people will be back soon when the running exercise is over.”
“Besides, after eating this, you can continue sleeping when it’s breakfast time after early self-study, and won’t have to rush to the cafeteria to fight for food.”
This was also what she had planned out for Yu Chuyao.
