Chapter 50: Abducting the Eldest Sister-in-Law

In front of everyone, Pei Chengyun held the drunk Shen Qiuci and turned to leave. This scene made Pei Yuanzhou’s face turn red with shame.

Pei Yuanzhou’s jealousy and anger boiled over, and he quickly stepped in front of Pei Chengyun to block him.
“Where are you taking her?”

Pei Chengyun replied calmly, “I’m taking her back to the Imperial Prison to sober up.”

“How can she sober up in this state?” Pei Yuanzhou stepped forward.
“I warn you, my wife’s body is weak. If you dare to torture her, I’ll report you to the Emperor himself and won’t let you off easily!”

Pei Chengyun smiled. “Don’t worry, Elder brother. The Imperial Prison won’t torture innocent people. Moreover,” he said, gently tucking a strand of hair behind Shen Qiuci’s ear, “my sister-in-law is also my relative, and I’ll naturally treat her with kindness.”

This action and his tone were full of provocation, making Pei Yuanzhou’s face turn red with anger. “You rogue! If you want to ask questions, do it here! With me present, you won’t take her away today!”

Pei Chengyun ignored him and instead pulled Shen Qiuci’s slender shoulders closer to him. He looked at Pei Yuanzhou with a teasing gaze and lowered his voice.
“This case is under the Emperor’s direct orders, and I’m in charge of investigating it. If you block me, it’s equivalent to disobeying the Emperor’s decree. Today, I’m taking my sister-in-law away no matter what. If you don’t believe it, you can report me to the Emperor, and I’ll wait for it.”

With that, Pei Chengyun walked straight out the door. As he passed by Pei Yuanzhou, who was blocking the way, he deliberately bumped into him, causing Pei Yuanzhou to stumble backward and fall to the ground.

Pei Yuanzhou hit his tailbone and couldn’t get up immediately due to the pain. He pointed at Pei Chengyun, his face full of anger. “You’re a bastard! You know my wife is innocent, but you’re abusing your power to take her away to avenge our Pei family. You’ll pay for this! I’ll make sure to tell the Emperor about today’s events, and you’ll be in trouble!”

Pei Chengyun didn’t listen.
He strode forward, seemingly unintentionally stepping on Pei Yuanzhou’s hand, and then walked away as Pei Yuanzhou screamed in pain like a pig being slaughtered.

Outside the Minister of Rites’s mansion, the warm indoor heat was replaced by the biting cold wind on the street, which stung people’s faces.

Shen Qiuci squinted her eyes, looking at the scene before her. Most of the officials’ servants and carriages had dispersed, leaving only a small portion, seemingly all Pei Chengyun’s men.

She heard Pei Chengyun call out, “Zhui Yue.”

A man with sharp features in brown clothes stepped out from the crowd. “Lord.”

Zhui Yue’s gaze fell on Shen Qiuci, who was being held in Pei Chengyun’s arms, and he couldn’t hide his surprise. “Who is she…”

“A suspect.”

The wind on the long street suddenly picked up, and Pei Chengyun naturally shifted his body to block the wind blowing towards Shen Qiuci.
“She’s drunk, go back quickly and prepare some sobering soup.”

“Why bother?” Zhui Yue whistled, and a brown horse obediently walked to him.
He stroked the horse’s mane and smiled.
“There are many ways to sober up. If you hand her over to me, I’ll take her for a ride in the cold wind, and she’ll wake up even if she’s heavily drunk.”

Pei Chengyun gave him a stern look. “Your words are a bit too casual today.”

The smile on Zhui Yue’s face froze, and he covered his mouth, taking two steps back. He quickly mounted his horse and didn’t dare to look at Pei Chengyun again.
He immediately rode away.

The carriage moved slowly forward, the wheels crunching on the snow-covered street, making a soft creaking sound. The carriage was warm inside, with a fire burning.

Shen Qiuci sat opposite Pei Chengyun, secretly opening her eyes a slit to peek at him.

The sunlight streaming through the window lattice was broken into regular squares, casting a dense and mottled shadow on Pei Chengyun’s face.

His eyelids were slightly closed, his thick eyelashes trembling slightly, and he was idly playing with a black jade pendant in his hand, looking calm and composed.

His presence was like a hidden undercurrent, calm on the surface but turbulent and surging beneath.

Although she hadn’t spoken a word to him, Shen Qiuci was almost certain that the man in front of her was a very troublesome and difficult person to deal with.

Shen Qiuci didn’t like trouble, and she wasn’t good at solving problems. Usually, she would choose to directly eliminate the person causing the problem.

As she thought this, the man sitting opposite her suddenly lifted his eyelids, his black jade-like eyes sparkling with amusement as he stared straight at her.

Shen Qiuci had only opened her eyes a slit, and as soon as she felt the man’s gaze on her, she quickly closed them.

About a quarter of an hour later, the carriage slowly came to a stop. Pei Chengyun lifted the curtain and asked in a voice that seemed to have a hook in it, “I wonder how much of her drunkenness has worn off?”

Shen Qiuci didn’t respond.

He chuckled and said, “In that case, I’ll have to take some liberties.”
Shen Qiuci kept her eyes closed and could only sense the faint movement of light, as if someone was approaching her.

She felt her waist being grasped by the man’s broad palm, and the next moment, her body was lifted into the air. Pei Chengyun effortlessly carried her down from the carriage with one hand.

As she landed on the ground, Shen Qiuci stumbled to the side, but Pei Chengyun quickly steadied her head, forcing her to lean against his shoulder, and supported her as they walked inside.

In the room, the sobering soup had been prepared in advance. Pei Chengyun supported Shen Qiuci to the table and had her sit down. A maid approached and stabilized Shen Qiuci, then scooped up the warm sobering soup to feed her.

However, this method seemed to be ineffective.

“Lord Pei, this woman is having trouble swallowing while sitting. Perhaps it would be better to have her lie down on the warm seat, making it easier to feed her the medicine?” one of the maids suggested.

“No need,” Pei Chengyun said, looking at Shen Qiuci with interest. He casually pointed to the inner room. “Help her lie down on my bed.”

The maid was taken aback for a moment but didn’t dare to ask further questions and did as she was told. After they had settled Shen Qiuci on Pei Chengyun’s bed, the maid turned around and saw that Pei Chengyun had taken the sobering soup into his own hands.

Pei Chengyun waved at her. “You can go now and wait outside.”

The maid replied, “Yes,” and left, gently closing the door behind her.

Pei Chengyun sat down on the edge of the bed, stirring the thick soup with a spoon, making a clinking sound. His gaze fell on Shen Qiuci’s face, watching as her eyelids twitched slightly. After observing her for a moment, he sneered and teased, “If you’re still pretending to be drunk, I’ll have no choice but to feed you this sobering soup with my own mouth.”

With that, he lifted the bowl and drank the soup himself, his movements swift and decisive.
