Chapter 39: She’s a Madwoman

After kowtowing a full hundred times, Xue Yinshuang’s vision blurred, and she fainted from the dizziness.

When she slowly came to, she found herself already back in her room. Shen Qiuci was sitting quietly on the edge of her bed, watching her with a smile, like a ghost.

“What are you doing?!” Xue Yinshuang was frightened, her face pale. She sat up in a panic and shrank towards the corner of the wall.

“Sister, you’re awake?” Shen Qiuci spoke softly and suddenly grabbed Xue Yinshuang’s wrist. “Don’t be afraid.”

Then she suddenly pulled Xue Yinshuang towards herself, their faces facing each other. Shen Qiuci’s expression was gentle, and she caressed Xue Yinshuang’s hand, saying with pity: “Mother is really something, how could she treat sister like this?”

She reached out to touch Xue Yinshuang’s forehead, but Xue Yinshuang dodged in fear. “You know exactly why mother treated me like that!” Xue Yinshuang glared at Shen Qiuci with red eyes, saying indignantly: “We’re both women, why do you torture me like this?”

Ha!
It was ironic that these words came out of Xue Yinshuang’s mouth. Shen Qiuci’s expression didn’t change, and she smiled warmly: “Sister, you’re exaggerating. When have I ever tortured you? The wounds on your back were inflicted by the yamen runners. The injuries on your head were caused by mother’s kowtows.”

“We’re sisters, I should be taking care of you, not hurting you. I even paid out of my own pocket to hire a doctor to treat your injuries.” She paused and stared at Xue Yinshuang with her deep eyes, saying menacingly: “Oh, right. There’s something else, sister might not know yet.”

She leaned in close to Xue Yinshuang’s ear, her lips barely open, her voice cold to the bone: “Dr. Xu is dead.”
This light sentence entered Xue Yinshuang’s ear like a thunderbolt, splitting her scalp and making her feel numb.

She suddenly pushed Shen Qiuci away, her chest heaving violently like a turbulent wave. “He… what does his death have to do with me?”

Shen Qiuci gently stroked the tangled hair by Xue Yinshuang’s temples. “You look so scared. It’s not like you killed him. What are you afraid of? I originally wanted to ask him to treat you because of his excellent medical skills…”

“Well, it’s good that he’s dead. He was a good person, but he was a bit muddle-headed in his old age.”
She slowly traced her finger over Xue Yinshuang’s pale cheek, lowering her voice. “If I had asked him to treat you and he made a mistake with the medicine, it would have made things worse.”

Xue Yinshuang’s eyes were trembling with fear, and she lowered her gaze, not daring to look at Shen Qiuci again.
Did she know?
Did she know everything?

Xue Yinshuang’s body began to shake uncontrollably, and she broke out in a cold sweat, dampening her clothes. Shen Qiuci saw her fear and sneered, then suddenly let go of her delicate hand, saying indifferently: “These days, take good care of yourself. I just advised mother not to rush things. Even if it’s teaching you discipline, we need to wait until your forehead is healed before you continue kowtowing.”

She stood up to leave, but then seemed to remember something and turned back. “Mother told me to pass on a message to you. She instructed you that when the Heir returns and asks about your injuries, you can only say that you accidentally fell and got hurt.”

“If you say anything else you shouldn’t, and the Heir goes to question mother, mother might get angry and do something to you, and I won’t be able to stop her.” As she finished speaking, she lightly patted Xue Yinshuang’s shoulder. Although the force was light as a feather, it made Xue Yinshuang shudder like she had been electrocuted.

Shen Qiuci looked at her with a cold smile. “We’re sisters, and we’ve always gotten along. Whatever you did to me in the past, I’ll repay you double in the future.”

“The days are long, and your good fortune is yet to come.” After saying this, she turned and left, leaving Xue Yinshuang trembling with fear.

Xue Yinshuang tightly grasped her maid’s hand, mumbling incoherently: “Lan Cui! She knows everything! She knows everything, doesn’t she?”

Lan Cui stroked her back to comfort her, saying: “Don’t scare yourself, wife. If the Eldest wife knew, she would have asked Dr. Xu to report you to the authorities.”

“Besides, Dr. Xu did something that would get him beheaded. How would he dare admit it? In my opinion, this is all just a coincidence…” Her reassuring words became softer and softer, obviously not even convincing herself.

Xue Yinshuang curled up, hugging her knees, her teeth chattering. “She’s changed… she’s not the same as before! She’s… she’s a madwoman!”

She took a deep breath, tightly hugging her trembling body, muttering to herself: “I won’t stay in the Marquis’s mansion anymore. If this continues, I’ll be tortured to death by her sooner or later!”

“I need to think of a way to trick that old woman into coming over as soon as possible and escape this ghost place!”
